He also produced a song on the last Destinys Child album. Still a great producer nonetheless.

Props Oklin.  9th summed up a lot of shit that I'm always spouting off about.  These were my favorite parts in the interview cuz I feel like he hit the nail square on the head:

ThaFormula.Com - With the way Hip-Hop production has changed since you first stepped on the scene, do you feel pressure to keep up with today’s production?

9th Wonder - No, I don’t because there is a generation of people that is out there that is my age and your age who still love soulful, jazzy loops and beats.  We are still out here.  If we are not, that means that nobody was born between the years of 1968 and 1980.  The problem is the radio does not speak to us.  The radio is geared straight for kids.  The sound they use, the stuff the talk about in their songs, although I feel like some kids don’t need to hear that.  It is geared for ages 12 to 20.  BET’s target market is girls ages 12 to 16. So my job is to get the people that I grew up listening to music with, the same guy that I sat with in 7th grade class listening to Public Enemy with is the same guy I’m trying to reach ‘cause nine times out of ten, he thinks the last De La Soul album is “De La Soul is Dead.”  There’s a generation of people out there that wants the music that Little Brother makes, they want it.  Are we put in a place where they can get it, no. Do you know why? Because they got kids now man and they got husbands or wives dealing with real life situations.  They don’t have time to sit on the Internet, they don’t have time to see what’s on Sandbox Automatic, they don’t have time to got to the record store.  All the time they got is to run into Best Buy, look under New Releases and leave, that’s all they got.  But what’s under the new release rack?  It ain’t Dilla, it ain’t Madlib, it ain’t Little Brother, it ain’t “Kids in the Hall,” it ain’t none of that.  It wouldn’t have been Common either if Common wouldn’t have gotten on Interscope and did the joint with Kanye.  Am I right?

ThaFormula.Com - Yeah, that's true...

9th Wonder – It’s not to denounce Kanye or Common at all.  All I’m saying is that there is still a generation, or there is such a thing now as “grown-up rap music.” There is such a thing now.  Rap is 33 years old, so as long as I can still pull the loyal A Tribe Called Quest fans who don’t know where Tribe is right now, I’m cool.  That’s a whole new market, that’s a brand new market. That’s a true school market.  For me, if a kid tells me, “9th you talk like somebody’s daddy” or “your beats sound old or dated,” well at least I’m acting my damn age!  That’s for damn sure.  And if you say I’m acting like somebody’s daddy or my music sounds old like somebody’s daddy, somebody needs to show you what a daddy is.  So that’s my point.  I don’t have to change nothing.  If I’m gonna change my stuff up man, I’m doing it cause I want to and I’ve always been like that.  That’s how I got to where I am, doing me.  But I notice everyday, there is a 34 year old woman or man saying “man you make the beats that I’ve been missing.”  I’d rather be a role model to a kid and try to show them where my generation is instead of trying to bring my generation to kick it with his.  Nah!  It don’t work like that.  It didn’t work like that with my parents.  When you were little and your parents would have a cookout, what music was they playing. Were they playing rap music?

ThaFormula.Com - Hell No...

9th Wonder - Hell no, they told you to “take your music and go to the bedroom with that, out here we are bumpin’ this, we don’t bump that.  You go with your friends to bump that,” but now you got cats my age, they playing what the kids are playing.  NO!!  You don’t do that.  You tell that kid the real, “yeah you are “Chicken Noodle Soupin’” and all, but what we out here playing is EPMD, either you can get with it or you can’t.  Take your little ‘dancey-dance’ music or whatever you call it and go in the bedroom.  Out here we listen to Salt-N-Pepa, Mary J Blige, EPMD, Guy, New Edition, etc. That’s what we’re playing out here.  We are grown and that’s what we do.”  So that’s where I am with mine.

Im saying dont try and come down on mainstream kids because their mainstream and dont know about better stuff.  My roommate for instance is a mainstream hip hopper and so i try and play some Murs, MF Doom, and Hiero as often as possible but i dont shove it in his face like most of you backpackers are known to have done in the past.

You're worse than any wannabe gangsta Oklin. Know why? Because you know nothing about Hip Hop. You're young in the game and that's why you act the way you do. You think its cool to be different. We all been there. Most of us grow out of it. So don't get mad when someones bumps Fif and acts thugged out, because at the same talking, you bump Little Brother and pretend to be Hip Hop.

i dont care if someone "bumps Fif and acts thugged out", thats there own problem.. but if they then begin to think they are hiphop because of that its just wrong..

but you know what they say: "Don't jump on the bags if you aint pissin in the problems"

Why can't someone who listens to Fif be Hip Hop? LMAO @ You. Is it because he makes Gangsta Music? If so, Ice Cube aint Hip Hop. Krs aint Hip Hop. You're not saying that now are you?

Is it because he makes Music for the Clubs? If so Zulu Nation aint Hip Hop. You're not saying that now are you?

Is it because he makes songs for Chicks? If so, LL aint Hip Hop. Are you saying that?

Explain yourself "Mr. Hip Hop."

i dont really have anything against gangsta music.. i just dont really like it.. it gives me nothing.. Cube and KRS atleast did it with great lyrics and dope beats, fifty didnt imo.
and i dont have anything against club music, i just dont like them like gangsta music. But 50 cent himself said that the only reason he makes music is to make money, that aint the hiphop spirit imo

Great read. 9th provides a lot of knowledge. I often find myself criticizing others musical taste, which is just foolish when I take the time to realize what I'm doing. There's plenty of good music in all genres released every year. Not to mention that there's a lot of music that I've never heard and will probably love when I do. My favorite part of the interview was when he talks about being knowledgeable about hip-hop before diving in head first. I wish some of the colleges around here had hip-hip classes. I would take those for the hell of it because it would mark the first time I was actually interested in a class and wanted to attend it on a daily basis.

It's funny, his comments about grown up music.

I remember back in 98, the first time i saw snoop. It was the best concert ever, i listened to snoop exclusively for months and months after that. Lol i sweat to God, i was walking around in snoop t-shirts feeling on top of the world  ;D

Now, i don't really get that much into that kind of music. I'm still loyal to snoop and buys his music, but not with the same passion. I really can't relate to what he's saying, so for me now the best music is cunninlynguists, immortal tech, planet asia, jedi mind, little brother, murs etc. etc.

I anyone dislikes the "50 cent era" it's me, but you can't really knock it. I too started out listening to nwa, the early death row and 2Pac... it's the same music! You can discuss the quality and originality of 50 cent vs. nwa/death row/2pac, but none the less it's the same music.

Suddenly i understand why my father used to lecture me in music, i see myself doing that sometimes to people who hasn't discovered all what hiphop (theres more to it than music) has to offer. But still, you can't knock the fact that they listen to 50 cent and music like that, respect is what hiphop is about as well.

Not only that...

BDP is about getting paid - KRS-One
EPMD stood for Erick and Parrish Making Dollars
Erick B and Rakim had an album called "Paid in Full".

It's been about the money from jump. Do you think Mos Def, Talib Kweli or Common would rap for chump change? They're talented artists but don't kid yourself, they want to make money just like the rappers some of yall despise.

I'm not a 50 Cent fan but he raps about the streets, just like Melle Mel did. He makes party music, just like Afrika Bambaataa did.

Just cuz you make club shit, gangsta shit, backpacker shit, shit for the ladies, etc. doesn't mean you are or are not hip hop.  It's all about the way you do it.

There's no problem making club joints.  There's obviously a market for it and some of the best hip hop songs ever could be classified as club joints.  The problem is that so much mainstream media will only play your shit if it sounds like that.  There's not enough diversification.  Sometimes I wanna cool out - maybe hear some Devin.  Maybe I just got wronged by the man and I wanna hear Public Enemy.  Maybe I'm wearing my backpack and wanna hear Digable Planets.  That's my beef - they try to perpetrate like Hip Hop is only one side these days.  Give me the whole fuckin smorgasbord.

If that's the case, get mad at the actual culprit. Get mad at the industry for only promoting certain types of music. All of this stuff happened right after all the record labels consolidated and the media outlets consolidated. Many retail record stores have disappeared. Tower records is gone, the werehouse is all but gone, Virgin megastores has downsized. Many smaller chains like Music Market disappeared. I don't think it's a coincidence that the quality of the music released by the mainstream deteriorated right around when this all started happening. Blame Viacom, Sony, GE, Clear Channel, they're the ones controlling all of this. When you have only a handful of companies that control the supply chain this is what happens. You turn music into a cheap commodity like coca cola or toothpaste and you mass produce it. Don't get mad at the south or whatever random rapper that's popular this month or whoever sold 5 million records or what not. The machine is way way bigger than that.

One other thing, with all this hip hop is dead talk, I thought hip hop was from the streets. I thought the streets fueled this shit. As far as I'm concerned, hip hop cannot die unless you remove the streets from the equation. In a way, things are reverting to way things were in the 80's when I got into hip hop. Back then, radio stations didn't fuck with it. MTV didn't fuck with it. You had to dig for shit back then and depend on word of mouth. Power 106 was playing Debbie Gibson. 92.3 the beat didn't even exist yet and when it came out, they only played R&B. KDAY's signal was so weak you couldn't get it most places. At least now, we have the internet, which allows artists to interact with their fans more directly then artists could do back then.

Things aren't as bad as they seem.
