i mean look at what they've released in the last couple of months:
that's quite impressive for an independent label (not to mention that MC Ren & Kam had the opportunity to drop an album there, yet they eventually took a step back for unknown reasons)
hopefully this is indication for the future of the label.
still, i don't completely get why these artists (especially Paris) don't get discussed much on here, even though Laconic is pushing Guerilla funk hard (thanks a lot for keeping us updated!).
i mean it's understandable that they're not as popular on here as DJ Quik, DPG, Dr.Dre, Eminem etc. as their music is not for everybody, but it seems to me that the majority has the perception that the Guerilla Funk artists are so far away from what they usually listen to.
i could be wrong, but that's how it looks to me.
that's crazy right? i mean i understand that consciousness is not cool ( some posters mock it & there's actually a few posters that get offended by consciousness, even though it is obviously not intended to be),
but it's not like you need to be mainly listening to conscious rap to appreciate a Paris solo album for example :P
though it does help you appreciate his music more, when you understand the points he's making.
take Paris' 3rd album for example:
Paris adapted dubcc's favourite sound, G-funk, to his music( i know, can it get any more ironic than that! ::) ), yet i don't see the album discussed often, while it seems to be a monthly event to make an appreciation topic about the past work of dubcc's favourite artists (translation: yes this is a stab at you idiots!)
it's never to late to check out music of the Guerilla funk label: this is coming from someone that is always relucant to check out music of artists that are new to me.
i think if you're new to Paris & you're a G-funk fan, it's best to start with the Guerilla Funk album.
if you're more into recent music, it may be easier to start with Acid Reflex, and then check out his older work in descending order.
for others, it doesn't really matter with which album you start, as Paris' is quite consistent to me 8)
then you can check out the other Guerilla funk artists, if you like what you hear :)

You are a Germ.

Btw. The First Conscious Daughters LP (Ear to the streets) was G Funk Too.

Btw. The First Conscious Daughters LP (Ear to the streets) was G Funk Too.
yep, good point ;) i think Gamers has some of it as well.
that makes it even crazier right?
-
As a g-funk fan of course I have Guerrilla Funk.
Root of All Evil, 44 Wayz, It's Real and Guerrilla Funk (regular and extended) are all great. Even Days of Old from his 1st album has a nice early g-funk sound to it.
Kam's Made in America should be considered one of the best albums in hip hop period, whether we're talking westcoast/g-funk or otherwise. Tracks 1-12...you can play it straight through.
That said, I've always been skeptical of this kind of "conscious rap." It's not the same "conscious rap" that say BlackStar puts out. I get angry from time to time but I'm generally a moderate. ;D
-
Paris´ beats has sounded like Dre's since day 1.
When Dre changed his sound,so did Paris.
Like Dre's beats but not fairytale lyrics.... hey, check out Paris :P  ;)
yeah we talked about that before ;)
it's so close, it's crazy.
Paris is a clever dude

i should have been more specific, as g-funk fans like you have listened to Guerrilla funk ;)
anyway, about "conscious rap", i see what you mean.
by the way, what part of it, makes you angry?
-
Ieen a Paris fan since I got "the devil made me do it" back in 93-94 I think! I like the beats and he always got something to say. He's a smart dude so a long as he keeps droppin albums I'll get buying them...
Peace

Sceptical? Angry? Why?
That Blackstar,Talib,Mos Def and Common shit is some quasi radical shit for suburban "white" cats.
Artists like Paris and Kam is the real deal.
Fuck Toby,I rolling with Kunta Kinte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunta_Kinte)
i don't get it either: Paris isn't even a racist.

nice, speaking of dedication 8)
see, it's clear that a lot of people who've listened to Paris' music, have nothing but love for Paris & his music.
so you'd think it's easy to find a few other to check out his music.
for example: he collaborated with one of dubcc's favourite artists: Spice-1 for Paris' 4th album Unleashed; the track is called Mob On, here's a preview:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B0000243UG/ref=pd_krex_dp_001_001?ie=UTF8&track=001&disc=001
they also collaborated on Spice-1's album : The Black Bossalini (a.k.a. Dr. Bomb from Da Bay)

I haven't checked any of the stuff Paris did after Guerilla Funk but I remember that album was dope as hell even though the lyrical content and the music didn't quite fit together IMO.
Also I had Conscious Daughters' We Roll Deep in constant rotation back then video was dope too.

i see your point: Paris could have come with a different vibe that's less "party like".
by the way, since you like We Roll Deep, did you hear the rough gangsta remix? that one is :o
i couldn't find it on youtube, so here's a preview
http://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/media/sample.m3u/ref=dm_sp_smpl?ie=UTF8&catalogItemType=track&ASIN=B000QMLRKE&qid=1244965932&sr=1-54
anyway, if you like, you should really check out the other Paris albums that you haven't heard yet:
similar content as the previous albums + i think Paris' production got better over time IMO

^^ Thanks for the heads up.
With Guerilla Funk it seemed like Paris thought he had to use the sound that was popular at that time (1994/G-funk) to get his message across, which probably was a wise decision if you look at it from that point of view. On the other hand I seem to remember Paris was never really fond of the gangsta element in rap so that's why I think the G-funk sound of Guerilla Funk, dope as it is though, seemed a bit out of place.
Btw that cover of Sonic Jihad :o
Reminds me of the backlash he caught when Sleeping With The Enemy was about to drop with that pic of him and Bush that was removed from being the album's cover art. 1992 was a turbulent year in hip hop indeed...

props for your interest & input :)
anyway, yeah it was definitely a marketing strategy to use the G-Funk sound.
Paris has criticised "gangsta" music a couple of times: take 40 ounces and a fool from Guerrilla funk, for example.
i agree with you, that if you want to make a statement as an artist, against a certain style, while using a sound that's associated with it, is contradicting.
yeah the artwork of Sonic Jihad is great 8)
also, i might as well post Bush Killa

Loving the music Paris is putting out. Urge people to check out Conscious Daughters new ablum, Nutcracker Suite. Nice album. Probably only 2nd to Murs For President, Acid Reflex was my favorite west coast album released from last year. Quality music from this camp.
-
damn that fonky expedition is dope as fuck!
anyways,Paris has been a favourite of mine for quite some time.First 3 albums are really good, Dre influence here and there, but he has his own style nonethelss.
My only remark tho, on Sonic Jihad, there was a track, can't remember the name, where he took "Some L.A. Niggaz" drums and put a diff melody. That was the only time I didn't really appreciate him sounding like Dre lol
-
Paris produced the majority of Spice-1's "Black Bossalini From The Bay" and did an awesome job. Lol he even got arrested and charged for robbing a studio of their equipment the same year...
-
thanks for the input guys :) i'm sure that the great Laconic will join us eventually as well 8)

ayo Hard Truth Soldier, have you checked Hard Truth Soldiers vol 2. & T-Kash' new album?

what do you mean? do you think that Unleashed, Sonic Jihad & Acid Reflex are not as good?
by the way, are you referring to the track Lay Low?
the drumsounds are different, but the bassline sounds similar to the one from Some LA Niggaz.
but Paris has used the same drumsounds as Dre a couple of times.
though, like you stated, he has a different style so it doesn't take anything away from him
anyway, i wonder how many MC Ren fans have heard Still ain't free ( produced by Paris)

lol at pulling the old Dubcnn-trick... Putting Dre's name in the headline just because someone mentioned him ;)
Paris is great tho, I wouldn't call him one of my favourite rappers, but he's always been concistent with his shit. Gotta say Guerilla Funk is my fav album of his... Dope ass g' funk. Title cut is classic!
-
Can anyone hook me up with Paris-produced Spice 1 tracks?
Unfortunatly I've been sleepin on Paris post-Guerrilla Funk, at least until I heard Rebith of a Nation. That albums still remains in heavy rotation, Paris keeps it real instead of going hyphy and goes beyond mob.
-
Bout to pop in this T-Kash and see what it do.

it's alright... I rate it somewhere around 3-3.5/5. He sounds a little like Jeru The Damaja right,or am I way off?
Tone is similar but me personally he reminds me a little bit of a cross between Lord Have Mercy and Saafir. Flow is very basic but he got lyrics.

I like Guerilla Funk and Sleeping with the Enemy... Unleashed is cool. Not really feeling the production on The Devil Made Me Do It. Haven't really checked out his post-millenium releases tho. Think I'll order them right now actually.

i see your point about the production of The Devil Made Me Do It: overall i think it's quite repetitive :-\
still, the song The Devil Made Me Do It is a monster IMO 8)

Props on the T-Kash- Brains All Over The Streets. I love this album. Light years ahead of most albums with the subject matter. Production compliments him nicely and his storytelling is really dope on here. Paints a scene of politicial and social situations well.

yeah the main section is full of shit, so it's not easy to set something up & keep it alive.
but i still got a few things left to talk about, in this topic :)

lets get it then
drop it
-
it's weird that Paris is influenced by Ice Cube, yet they never collaborated before :P
i mean it's not like it's a requirement, but their styles fit well
-
yeah that would be dope
it would be dope to see traxx wit these
cpo
mc ren
rbx
ice cube
(altho the others are ahead of cube) cube is dope, but rbx and cpo are two of the best ever and will out rap cube, at least i would hope lol

well i mentioned Cube as his style is close to Paris'.
then again, Paris has worked with Spice 1 so why not?
as far as the names you listed, being ahead of cube: i'm not knocking you for mentioning RBX, but MC Ren isn't even on full strength right now
CPO is unique, but ahead of cube :o that's a little too much don't you think? i respect it if you prefer him over Cube though.
Cube is dope when he's not focusing on gaining a new audience.
linking up with Paris should bring the best out of him ;)

funny reviews of Hard Truth Soldiers Vol.1 from amazon.com :D
1.0 out of 5 stars Politicized Junk, April 30, 2006
By Viper (Chicago IL) - See all my reviews
I've never liked Paris, he's always been a terrible producer and an even worse rapper. Every song on here sucks. MC Ren officially sold out when he hooked up with this clown. I respected Ren for helping overshadow this politicized garbage when he was with NWA and I frankly can't belive that he is helping them now. And Kam sold out too since his albums weren't heavily politicized either. These songs are boring, idiotic, and unlistenable with weak lyrics and wack beats and with distorted messages that only braindead idiots would listen to. This is one of the worst albums of the year.
3.0 out of 5 stars The Hard Truth is hardly all that great, March 28, 2006
By enuffodis "enuffodis" (SF) - See all my reviews
Hard Truth Soldiers....overall a dissapointment, but that's not surprising.
You know, in a perfect world, Osama Bin Lauden and the US administration would be best buddies (again). There would be no religous extremists (in the Middle East or the Midwest). In a perfect world, when a group of established MCs put together an album that is set to transform hip-hop and give the powers-that-be a firm foot in the ass, that album would be absolutely phenomenal. It would be unquestionably, 100%, jaw-droppingly fresh. The beats would be like nothing you've heard before --- and you could tell the lyrics took years to perfect, and the cohesiveness of the project would be unbreakable.
The reality, unfortunately, is more in line with what my roomate just happened to say (pretty anti-climactic, right?). He just glanced at the CD, read the lineup of the guys on the album, and said, "Sounds like some washed up rappers trying to start up a supergroup that nobody relly cares about." Unfortunately, he hit the Hard Truth right on the head.
The specifics are the same-old standard complaints with Grade B quasi-independent hip-hop: The beats are mediocre and suffer from unimaginative production. The rappers have brief moments of lucidity, but the quicksand you have to slog through on your way to finding them removes the thrust.
Overall worth a few tolken stars (funny how the "stars" featured on this album are still worth a few stars, isn't it...mostly because of what they have done in the past.). But hey, that's just the Hard Truth of how it goes in the real world.

yah ren is dope, but his flow can be borin but IMO prefer mc ren on some str8 jimmy bones type shit
but cube on that "smoke some weed" type is dope too
but cpo on return of the regulator was classic
his flow was str8 fire and damn them traxx were dope
yeah that would be dope
it would be dope to see traxx wit these
cpo
mc ren
rbx
Cube is dope when he's not focusing on gaining a new audience.
linking up with Paris should bring the best out of him ;)

yeah i'll look for similar reviews of other Paris (related) albums later, this is too funny

Sonic Jihad review from amazon.com:
1.0 out of 5 stars Knowledge., July 26, 2006
By Listen up
This album has obviously been reviewed by people who know nothing about hip hop. Maybe some punk rock converts, or fans of the supposed "underground." This is the sort of album that makes casual rap fans think the underground is boring. Paris flow is average at best, his voice is uninspiring, although he doesn't sound like a nerd, and his production is far below average. Honestly, i was expecting more. Of course people who don't know hip hop can overlook the "hip hop" and "music" elements of this album, and just listen to the lyrics because, by golly, they're political! It seems that for people without friends songs about politics is the equivalent of "shake that booty" for the partyers. Now i have nothing against political rap. However i refuse to give low quality rappers who make low quality music such as paris and immortal technique praise just because they have political lyrics. If you're looking for political rap you would do well to check for a rapper with actual mic skills such as wise intelligent, or mr. lif.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible excuse for Music, March 7, 2006
By Viper (Chicago IL) - See all my reviews
This junk is surely going to be on my list of 2006's worst albums. I really wish I could give it 0 stars. It's a god awful mess from start to finish. I've always hated Public Enemy, their music has always been dull, boring, and pointless. Paris and Sister Souljah also suck. And Paris wrote all the lyrics on this piece of garbage. I guess Public Enemy aren't confident enough to write thier own music. The production here is really bad and even Kam, MC Ren, and The Concious Daughters are bad here too but that's because Paris wrote thier lyrics. MC Ren is a sellout for appearing on this album. Seriously, I respected him for helping kill this awful group off and now he makes a song with them? Well I hear he's got a new album coming out so hopefully he won't put these dumbasses on there. This is destined to become one of the worst albums of the year. A big big big thumbs down for this garbage. I know this is going to piss off all these PE following drones but go cop Juvenile's new album "Reality Check" instead. Juvenile makes good music with good production and lyrics that entertains.
2.0 out of 5 stars What Happened?, May 7, 2007
By Huey Newton - See all my reviews
Public Enemy has always set a high standard for their music and message. They could always be counted on to break down reality, put it in a groove, and drive a message home so hard that it was inspiring and also a call to action on all levels. I know they still have the ability to do that. I see them live regulary in NYC just about everytime they are there. I was there when Chuck D did the guest shot with George Clinon and P-Funk at the Appollo last year. I'm a die hard fan. This album however is very dissapointing.
Public Enemy never condescended to profanity laced tirades. They were always too smart, too intelligent for that. On this latest peice of work there are so many "F's" and "MF's" that, unlike "Bum Rush" "Fear of a Black Planet" "Nation" or "Apocalypse" I won't even share it with my kids or the other young people that I know. I'm a youth counselor and have worked with young people for years. I like to share music with them that has a solid , moral message.
PE has always fit the bill in my book. That, being said, I was really looking forward to this CD based on the reviews I've read here on AMAZON.COM. I feel like I've been hoodwinked! When your vocabulary is deep, you don't need to resort too profanity to make a point. There are plenty of words available with which to communicate. With the addition of PARIS their deleivery has definitely changed. It's not that my ears are so "pure" that I'm offended. It's just that the CD is laced with the stuff. Also, assassinating the President and burning down the White House are not going to get us where we as BLACK people need to be. That's just dumb. We are at WAR and one of the first things the devil tries to control is your tongue. If he can control your tongue, he can control your body and control your world. Unfortunately, on this piece, PE's articulation of the issues has gone into the gutter. Yes, they are still talking about things that need to be said that no other rappers en mass are not doing. There are a few exceptions. My guess is that they are trying to reach the "Thugs" and convert them to polital and social action rather than "Pimpin', ho'in, dealin' and blingin'. I understand the sentiment, but the gutter language tactics turns me off.
One of the things I have always liked about PE is that the delivery was smart, intelligent, and meaningful. This record is profane and mean sprited, not just angry. It makes it hard for me to identify with where they are coming from this time because there is no real HOPE displayed here. Not even a glimmer of PEACE and LOVE. Too negative. It just doesn't make one think about solutions to problems. It just expounds on the problems themseleves.
I don't want our young people to grow up sounding like this. We need a revolution and that starts in the home with the parents or guradians. We need a sense of identity, meaning and morals. If we don't have that, we will end up living and sounding just like the rest of the lost people in this world. Living beneath our God given privledges and always looking for someone or something to blame rather than taking full responsibilty for our own lives. God bless all who read this and have a nice day.

you can download snippets of a lot of Guerilla funk albums here: http://www.guerrillafunk.com/artists/
just click on the artists.
I haven't checked any of the stuff Paris did after Guerilla Funk but I remember that album was dope as hell even though the lyrical content and the music didn't quite fit together IMO.
i'd say it's only the production of the title track & It's Real that don't fit

Paris never really raps on a track produced by others, that can't be a coincidence.
