Erotic D is in jail for a very long time
can someone elaborate on this and what happened with him and DOC?
-
All DOC albums really flopped and dissapointed me. Hes supposed to be respected. IMO hes under average like RBX!
-
I'm pretty sure that Erotic D is going to get released some time soon.
And shaddapa ya face.
-
DOC is extremely overrated as a writer. How do you become a top tier lyricist by writing average lyrics for gangsta rappers?
-

Sick talent, especially in his time. He could do it all. To bad his voice is fucked up.
-

its more then just the lyrics...he knows how to write a catchy hook and he structures the songs well.

That's great and all but still doesn't explain how he's being compared to real lyricists.
-
probably because he wrote some of the biggest rap records that have ever charted...that would be my guess.
the art has progressed since his heyday but it dont make his contribution any less relevant.
didnt he write most of the blue carpet treatment?

He wrote 2 songs on BCT....none of them with lyrics that would blow you away
I would understand if the nigga was ghostwriting classic verses for Nas....but he's not. He's writing throwaway verses for gangsta rappers that a real lyricist wouldn't touch. If Dre were writing his own shit no one would be calling Dre an amazing lyricist. If you aren't coming out with great lyrics, how the fuck are you a great lyricist? Cmon son.
-
being able to write songs and being a great lyricst are two totally different things.
there are alot of dudes out there who can rap like a motherfucker but cant put together a good song/album for shit.
-

No that's freestyling. Lyricists are lyrics to a song. If you can't write great lyrics, you aren't a great lyricist.
Nas is a great lyricist because his lyrics make the song. Even over average production he can make a track stand out. Dre can make great songs, but its not because of the lyrics that they're great. His shit is carried by the production. There was nothing special about the lyrics the DOC was ghostwriting. Proof? DOC wasn't the only dude writing for him. There's many examples of Dre songs that have become hits regardless of who the fuck wrote the lyrics.
Anyway as I was saying, the DOC is not a great lyricist.
-
rap as far as i can tell your the only person in this thread that even used DOC and the word lyricist in the same sentence...If you read through this thread i said he can write his ass off and ill stand by that statement as hes penned many songs that we both know by heart im sure of it...your talking yourself into a corner just for the sake of arguing.
-

How am I talking myself into a corner? The DOC gets brought up as a great lyricist all the time, even if its not in this thread. You've been here at the dub for a long time so I can't believe you wouldn't have noticed.
lol you're the one who replied to my first comment about him not being a great lyricist so either you've changed your mind or you started arguing for nothing.
-
I implore you to go back and show me where i said he was a lyricist, especially in the modern sence of the word...this guy has been on the scene with dre since 85 or some shit...AND he came out of texas, niggas was rapping HAT with CAT and shit like that back then. when you look at the progress doc is responsible for helping bring forth he deserves recognition for his song writing.
being a good song writer and a good lyricist is not the same thing.
fifty cent is a good song writer but not a great lyricist
keith murray is a good lyricist but not a great song writer.
-

Whoever said you did?

No they weren't. You heard of Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, etc?
Plus DOC when he came out in the Fila Fresh Crew was nothing special. Go listen to I Hate to Go to Work and its basically a Fresh Prince ripoff. The nigga was rhyming CAT and BAT shit til his solo debut.
being a good song writer and a good lyricist is not the same thing.
fifty cent is a good song writer but not a great lyricist
No he's not. The guy can make good songs based on his charisma and hooks but there is nothing special about his lyrics. His songs become hits because of the beat, delivery, hooks, not the lyrics. If Eminem were ghostwriting for the nigga his shit would be even better.
song writer implies writing lyrics. How the fuck are you a good song writer if you can't write good lyrics?
-
these guys were coming up in the south fam, there was no internet and radio stations were far and few inbetween that played rap...these guys would be years behind there east coast counterparts as far as styles and fashion trends hence the term bammer...a bammer is a country dude thats behind the times ussuallly pictured with a jeri curl and a zoot suit or some shit like that...then run dmc fresh fest would post up and cats would start rocking the different styles and wearing fila jumpsuits and what not...im rambling. what im trying to say for him to come from the fila fresh crews shit and flip it into some hard shit that would end up influencing the whole rap game as well as personify a whole coast for over a decade you gotta tip your hat to that guy.
thats what good song writing is...themes, catchy hooks, ad libs and overall songs structure etc.
your looking for meaningful technical lyrics and shit on some backpacker see how many syllables i can flip in a bar simile dropping type of rapper and saying thats what good song writing is about and saying that being able to spit is equal to being able to write and you know your my boy rap but on that one your wrong.
-
All DOC albums really flopped and dissapointed me. Hes supposed to be respected. IMO hes under average like RBX!
u got to be the only one on the planet that feels this way...but thats your opinion.

Tip your hat all you want, it still doesn't make him a great lyricist. You could go on and on about his contributions to the game, but its meaningless to anything I've been saying.
thats what good song writing is...themes, catchy hooks, ad libs and overall songs structure etc.
lmao no its really not. So according to you MC Hammer and Kris Kross are good song writers? Better than Nas or Common?
If you can't tell the difference in songwriting skill between NY State of Mind and Can't Touch This, or I Used to Love H.E.R. vs. Jump then something is very wrong with you.
-
i wouldnt call them good song writers because...
1) they've never successfully written for other ppl
2) they didnt write there own songs
Jermaine Dupree did however pen the whole kris kross discography and as much as i hate that guy he is a good song writer with credentials to prove it...your on some hip hop elitist shit right now rap and it seems like your willing to flesh this argument out regardless of whether you lost about three posts ago just for the sake of arguing.
you can mix lyricism into your song writing and that will always be respectable but a song dont have to be complex to be well written.
/end thread

LMAO you fucked up bro. If you're calling Jump a better written song than I Used to Love H.E.R. all I can say is you lose. End thread.....smh at niggas trying to end arguments cuz they know they lost.

there's a problem. you both have very different definitions of what "better" means. spice means more complex, of higher creative achievement and king petey means something along the lines of catchy, successfully capturing the attention of a wide audience.
spice, your reply makes it seem like he basically said Jump Jump is "doper" than I Used to Love H.E.R. (which any sane fan of Hip Hop music would disagree with, obviously).
another part of the problem is that none of these terms have been defined properly. usually people seem to associate the word "lyricist" with rappers like pharoahe monch, talib kweli, nas, crooked I, ras kass - rappers who rely heavily on complex rhyme patterns, metaphors, punch lines or unconventional concepts. rappers associated with the word "song writer" are people like 50 cent, snoop, pac and the like. I say usual because that's how I have seen these terms used during my time.
I also think during the time of 50's initial success, the distinction started to be made actually (or at least more often than before). People would talk about "this and this is an actual SONG" (usual implying a traditional adaption of the traditional model of popular music with two or three verses and chorus and bridge about a set topic which is easy to follow for the listener) vs. tracks on which rappers just "spit" (battle tracks, freestyle type songs).
So when people might say for example, that the song writing of Jump Jump by Kriss Kross or 21 Questions by 50 Cent is "better" than that of I Used to Love H.E.R. by Common or I Gave You Power by Nas, they tend to mean that the format of the former two is more accessible, easier to comprehend by the average listener and modeled after "traditional" songwriting in the vein of music that came before rap. When people give a track props for lyricism, like we usually do with the latter two songs, they praise it for its unique take on the concept, its unconventional approach which, by definition, goes against traditional patterns and thus limiting the appeal to a niche audience that is specifically interested in this style.
so you're both right in some regards. you just misunderstand each other (like it is with 95% of all arguments)
if you wanna argue about semantics, you have to reach common ground on the definition of those words you're arguing about.
-
im not saying that jermaine dupree is a more talented writer then common by any means, im saying hes more prolific and acheived, rap your pretty mean the pen too if i remember correctly so i know you know what im talking about when im talking about song structures and shit like that. the truth of it is Im a dj at heart and i guess when your playing music for ppl you become programmed to try and find the line between popular music and quality music because the pop sure as fuck dont equal quality...often its vice versa.
i love underground hip hop too but i dont go fanatic for it at all i aint ashamed to say alot of the artists i see you fawning over here and at dba i have no idea who they are but after taking a second to listen to them i might fuck with them a little bit i guess its a matter of taste and interpretation
-
you guys are fags. lol.
-
i gotta say this shit is getting out of controll lmao.
-
im not saying that jermaine dupree is a more talented writer then common by any means, im saying hes more prolific and acheived
lmao so you're really not saying anything? Anyone can look at sales and popularity and say that. Why do you keep going on about shit that has nothing to do with what I've been saying? The nigga can produce for as many 12 year old kids as he want, it still doesn't say shit about skill as a lyricist unless the lyrical skill is there.
DOC is extremely overrated as a writer. How do you become a top tier lyricist by writing average lyrics for gangsta rappers?
-
I mean goddamn there's a total disconnect between what I'm saying and what you're saying.
I say: The D.O.C. isn't a great lyricist
You say: The D.O.C. wrote N.W.A.'s shit and worked with Dre his whole career. He helped pioneer west coast gangsta rap.
So fucking what nigga? I ain't disagree with anything you just said. It doesn't have shit to do with anything I've said. Lol your just stating random statements about The D.O.C.'s career. Either give me a counterargument or bow down.

when Petey breaks out the meme generator he's mad :D
I made an observation about The DOC and you caught feelings and started to defend your hero. Except you really had nothing to say so you brought up unrelated factoids about his career. Thanks for the history lesson, Johnny Cochran.

okay rap youve won. you are an internet gladiator and your hip hop opinions are not to be tampered with or questioned. I sincerely apologize for making a thread like this that has offended your imperial musical sensibilities.
i am in no position to challange the opinions of such a well spoken and cultured hip hop scholar as yourself and will try my best to make sure this never happens again.
back on topic...
this is a decent lil collection but like most of his post accident projects i cant listen to too much of his voice....it hurts when rap.
-
nuthing wrong with arguing, as long as you bring up something relevant
-
lol sorry fam im not like cham i dont thrive on that shit...i like a well spirited argument as much as the next bloke but more then anything here i just interpreted that you took me saying that he could write as saying that he was a highly skilled technical rapper and thats not the case...

bow down and kiss the ring :pimp:

The D.O.C is a top notch lyricist , even better than Cube . All the great westcoast classics were either penned by him or performed by him . Even his skits are great ...Spice Two is obviously a young buck . I'm afraid he is just too high strung .

where are these shining examples of his top notch lyricism? I'm pretty sure I've heard every song he helped write. Sorry but he was pretty much an exclusive ghostwriter for Eazy, Dre and Snoop. And none of the shit he did with them was anywhere near brilliant as far as lyrics.
