bumping now, cats may as well hit me for linkage as most the ones on the web are KO. goes without saying, support the project when it drops. shame there's not a cd version, i'll probably end up copping the vinyl. also i wonder how it leaked seeing there's no cd release and stones throw is a small label...

Yo Matty good lookin' 4 postin' this thread! I have never heard of Mayer Hawthorne so I didn't know what 2 think when I saw his name beside Jake One. I am familiar with Jake One & like his beats so I figured this was an MC/Producer album & was willing 2 check it out bc of Jake One's talent. I wasn't xpecting this but I am definitely not disappointed. The 3 tracks on the EP r really dope & I went on Amazon 2day 2 check if they had ne nother music 2gether & noticed that the Tuxedo project is up 4 pre-order right now 4 a nice price. It is slated 2 b released on Feb. 24th so I will definitely b coppin' it.
Gonna buy the album off the strength of the EP as well so I appreciate all the info & links posted in this thread so far. That Wonderful Christmastime joint is pretty dope too haha.

you egotistical maniac ;D lol, for real though i never wait when it's a project i'm eagerly aniticipating. exception would be if some crappy webrip surfaces which would potentially spoil things. thankfully this one is a crisp 320, i heard DJs etc got promo copies a couple of weeks back so that's prolly where the leak originates from.
anyways, the album is great. i feel it could be better, but given the scope of the project there's nothing to complain about, on the contrary. also bear in mind i've been playing 'Random Access Memories' a lot recently, which sets the bar ridicolously high for a 80s era 'throwback' album.
the sound is more gfunk/zapp/parliament inspired than i imagined, the chunky synth basslines are a prominent feature of the production throughout. this is the updated sound they've carved out - taking bombastic synths, drum slaps and fusing them with a more souled-out disco groove in the vocals and the rest of the instrumentation. i applaud this in the sense it's sonically fresh while still being a throwback. and the mix (done by an OG disco dude) brings a warmth and fullness to jake one's crisp production.
as for individual tracks, it's enjoyable from front to back, nothing even close to skippable. my personal favourites (for now) and where the production really shines would be 'R U Ready', 'The Right Time' and 'Roll Along'. that's just from the new stuff, i still think 'Do It' is a standout cut, classic joint and probably the best song hands down. 'The Right Time' is the closest to 'Do It' for a straight jam - a high energy, high tempo slammer with a classic Chic-esque strings riff spliced onto the hook. i don't think it'd be out of place next to the material on the last Chromeo LP, that's one of the things that comes to mind when listening to a lot of these tracks. but being a bit of a Hawthorne stan, the man can do no wrong and nails the vocal for these type of tracks. 'Roll Along' is your typical pimp strut groove and another place where the production works perfectly - thick bassline, cheeky brass and some great swooning from Mayer.
so there's a few thoughts. worth remembering this is quite outside the box for Jake One, who's used to producing straight hip hop beats, though this type of music has always been an influence for him. i think that shows a bit, but it's still a fantastic effort and a dream project for cats like myself. i just hope they can do another one that's even better or at least Hawthorne keeps up the funk in future ventures. a bigger team of musicians and some other co-producers would do wonders for this direction, but for what it is' 'Tuxedo' is a breath of fresh air and a marvelous project to have materialized. matty/10
lastly a new mix posted on the Tuxedo soundcloud with a Valentines/slow jam theme, but still dope and groovy https://soundcloud.com/tuxedofunk/step-in-the-name-of-love

lol i got an implicit competition with my friend about who puts the other on the best music
anyway +1, great write up

I'm loving the 80s vibe on this album. Gotta say it exceeded my expectations, consistent all the way through.

oh yeah i forgot to post this before, but there's a tuxedo european tour going down imminently. may be of interest to euros, they added the paris date after the initial announcement (bouli - https://www.facebook.com/events/1447677028788007/). annoying there's no london, i was asking about that and they said no venues available :( trying to organize a weekend in holland to catch the final one though 8)

I refused to listen to any of the leaked tracks so far and can't wait for the physical copy of the LP to arrive. Hope it will meet my expectations.
What's the deal with the Tuxedo DJ set? Are they just playing records without actually performing any of their own songs? I would love to visit an actual performance, but just seeing them play records doesn't do it for me and I'm not sure whether it's worth going.
-

yeah that's what I was wondering, I'll go anyway it's always dope to hear artists doing their sets.
as for the album, I need to really digest it, but I wasn't blown away, but it's definitely a grower. I have some issues with Mayer's high pitched voice sometimes (just for this album), and the song structure, I think some vocals / melodies aren't convincing enough and the bridges are hit or miss. I will post a detailed review later. The Right Time is The Shit and I'll buy the album regardless 8)

yeah i'm not surprised, given the strength of the EP i think it could of turned out a little better. i was hinting as such but it's hard for me to be down on this. what you said about the vocals is valid and comes up a few times. i said there were no skippables but there kinda is and it's for that reason. there's this one track with a high pitched vocal and whiny synth nearly all the way through (I Got U) and it's pretty annoying, lol.

DJ set is generally just that, spinning records. likely some of their own too but not a performance per se. depends how far you gotta travel, no brainer if its local unless you have something better to do. i'd be on it if there was one here, a night of 80s funk with these guys behind the decks, yes please. would probably be a good chance to talk to them too 8)
-
Thanks for the replies. I don't know, if I can go there. I surely will drop you some feedback when I can make it, though. 8)
-
after numerous spins, i can safely say that's it's a very cohesive album and that I enjoy every track. not quite what I expected but they mastered their sound and it's well produced, rich sound and dope rhythmic guitars. I still stand by what I said about the song structures and the high pitched voices but I do enjoy most of the bridges. i thoroughly enjoyed the piano and guitar solos (see Two Wrongs)

'Roll Along' sounds most a 'Where Does This Door Go' leftover, the sound of that one is pretty different to most of the tracks. they said a few songs recorded in those sessions ended up on here. people can put 'Designer Drug' & 'Henny & Gingerale' on the back as bonus tracks too, originally meant for this.
-
if henny & gingerale was on the tuxedo project, this would have been easily my favorite track. it's my favorite Mayer Hawthorne track ever, lol.

another bonus cut could be this Doom x Elzhi collab (click (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjFJlHITFgo)) but it never got released. They only played it at some SXSW show.

dj set was great, great vibe, we came early at about 6:30 but they didn't start until 10ish and I left around half past midnight, didn't get to rest till the end but they played some of their album, so good, do it, the right time got the crowd hype, some already knew the lyrics lol. as expected a lot of 80's funk (atlantic starr, zapp, etc.), p-funk, punk funk and as I was about to leave they played back to back "give it to me baby", "ain't no fun" which segued into number one. my phone was dead (rookie mistake) so I couldn't take videos or pictures but I expect some footage to come out on youtube soon.

I'm from Berlin and wanted to go there, but couldn't make it due to them starting too late that evening and nobody having time to join wasn't that great either. :P Hope they will be back again some time, but I really doubt it. I'm currently listening to the Berlin mix. That's exactly what I expected them to play...great stuff! 8) This project really is up to something, really like their approach to that old school Funk.
"Henny & Gingerale" is awesome, one of his best in my opinion. His "Where does this door" LP was good, but lacking some stand out tracks. My favorites are "Back Seat Lover", "Her Favorite Song" and "Wine Glass Woman", but "The Innocent" if good as well. "Allie Jones" always reminded me of Snoop's Reincarnated project, especially when comparing it to "Lighters Up". The first ever I'v heard of Mayer Hawthorne was when he did that "Gangsta Luv" remix for Snoop, followed with "Can't Stop" featuring Snoop. Really liked them and started to go through his catalogue.
-
had a fun time in Holland, gotta say Rotterdam isn't half as interesting as Amsterdam...promptly headed there the next day 8)

the 'Where Does This Door Go' LP, a classic project with a mix of influences, styles and genres. get the itunes version if you can as it has an extra Pharrell produced track. his first two albums are more smooth, laid back soul numbers so check those out if that sounds appealing. 'Henny & Gingerale' is another great track from Hawthorne and Jake One.

if you didn't like 'Do It' i don't think you'll enjoy this record, as that's one of if not the best track. it's Jake One's production but it's nothing like his Hip Hop material. to be fair a few of us have said the album wasn't all that amazing, though enjoyable for 80s funk fans. the Chromeo comparisons were apt were so unless that or Hawthorne in general is your cup of tea...
-
but I like 80s funk .. this just feels more like pop
btw bumpin gift of hand 4th dimensional album ... most of the production handled by jake one 8)

^that production is dope, still feel the vocals could be better tho....the singing doesnt give off as much of an old-school vibe as the video/production does.
-
caught the end of the London gig last night, the vibe was kinda dry compared to the Rotterdam one. half expected that though. was an early evening thing, finished by 11 and the venue was way too big for the amount of people.
music was obviously slammin' and they played a brand new Tuxedo song. sounded really good to me, Tuxedo 2 should be dope! 8)

wait till you hear the track they played from the next album, if that's any indicator i think it'll blow the first one away. they both said 'The Right Time' was their favourite track off this one as it was the last they made when the sound was most advanced. after a while with this LP it seems to be a standout 8)
-
they need to get a better singer over these beats...maybe james blake or some ish. i can see him becomin a star if he stepped outa the elecrtonic genre for at least 1 project.
-
the new track i was banging on about can be heard @ 41 mins 8) only for a short while though...

watching these 2 dudes in their white tuxedos makes me think a lot to Chromeo.

watching these 2 dudes in their white tuxedos makes me think a lot to Chromeo.
Me too ! since the begining
-
i enjoy way more the Chromeo sound though.
-
chromeo is fruity as fuck...yeah they were out way before tuxedo but even back then i couldnt get into them...too many upbeat/experimental things and i dont like the singers voice..too pop/radio sounding..
-
chromeo are on their fourth album though this is only #1 from tuxedo. i would expect their sound to be much more slick and polished on the next project.
the album grew on me a lot too. they said 'the right time' was the last track produced for this and their favourite as the sound had time to develop. 'Tuxedo 2' should be dope, but 'White Women' was the slickest produced Chromeo album so far. I still prefer 'Fancy Footwork' as their best LP and agree they've ventured into fruity pop territory instead of keeping it gangsta.

Speaking of chromeo, does anyone who likes tuxedo listen to them? What about breakbot? I'm trying to find similar sounding artists to buy something from to groove to.
