exactly...back in 96 I would have said east coast even though I prefered west coast music... lyrically no one was seeing Nas, Big or Jay

That´s Where The Discussion "Beats-vs-Lyrics" Starts.I Pick The West Because They Have Better Music by "music" i mean both but i agree east had better rappers.

but Big L in 1996 was the best lyricist the east had to offer

Difference between NY and LA is in the number of cats who rap. Since the culture originated in NY, you will have a million cats in NY trying to rap. The bank teller raps. The fucking liquor store owner raps. The fucking carnicero raps. Of course many of them on a high level. LA on the other hand has less dudes as a whole. But in terms of QUALITY, we can compete with anyone from a lyrical standpoint. Ny might have 2 million dudes trying to rap compared to LA's 500k but we have quality that can kill anyone from any fucking region...point blank.

There's wanna be rappers everywhere. Just stating that NY has that culture in which you're going to see greater numbers of people rapping. Whether they are good or not. Just like LA has this "gang" culture that you don't see anywhere else.

Sure but a lot of "old school" NY cats will get shitted on also. Not everyone in NY is a beast. Same goes for every region. You named a few who can spit from the WEST but there's waaaay more cats. Gift of Gab, Blu, Locksmith, etc etc etc. There's a grip that can shit on a anyone.

Right now, in 2013, the West. The west has better rappers, even lyrically than the east. The East sounds too much like the south, the west sounds too much like the mid-west. Every Cali producer is trying to be Kanye, every NY producer is trying to be Lil' Jon. Rappers in LA are trying to rap like Jay-Z and rappers in NY are trying to rap like Lil' Wayne. So right now, I'd take LA.

not really lol, the hottest beatmakers in the west right now are DJ Mustard, League of Starz, 1500 or Nothin', Scoop Deville, DJ Khalil, DJ Fresh, Droop-E, etc. none of them remotely sound like Kanye. Peeps like DJ Mustard & League of Starz make Bay Area inspired "function music" which is closer to Lil Jon than to Kanye. 1500 or Nothin' are mentored by Battlecat, DJ Khalil & Scoop Deville work with Dre. DJ Fresh makes modern mobb music.

Scoop DeVille put out Poetic Justice and a few other soulful tracks, Alchemist a westcoast cat, got a soulful sound especially when he did Hey You, even DJ Quik had a hand in the track Those Girlz. I mean seriously, LA producers be trying to either come with a southern track, or a soulful mid-west track. And don't act like producers in LA don't all have AT LEAST one soulful Kanye sound a like track.

DJ Mustard put out Rack City, 'nuff said about him until I hear some good music out of him, and I mean classic tracks. Serious, you put a Dub Step dude in your list? As for Droop-E, most of the post I was referencing LA. Read it again.

lol Poetic Justice is a classic Janet sampled originally produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis which had been sampled by J. Diggs 3 years before. Soulful =/= Kanye. By the way That's one song off the album. Alchemist has more of a NY sound than a Midwest sound, hence him fucking heavily with the likes of Prodigy. Hey You dates back from 2002 before Kanye's style became over popular (don't get me wrong he was already making a dent). Kanye being from the midwest doesn't mean Kanye has a typically regional midwest sound btw, he doesn't really. He has his own sound that changed the game around 04. A lot of producers have tried to emulate Kanye's songs, that doesn't mean that West Coast producers sound too much like the midwest, they simply don't. If anything, some are biting the South but League of Starz & DJ Mustard are the go to producers in the West so far and they've produced bangers for West and South artists (E-40, Problem, Bad Lucc, Jeezy, Tyga, 2 Chainz).
Title: Re: East Coast vs. West Coast
Post by: M Dogg™ on August 20, 2013, 12:49:05 PM
But since Kanye, most every mid-west producer used that style. Now you can really trace the soulful sound back to the East in the early 90's. But J Dilla really made it popular in the Mid-West and Kanye just took it to a whole new level. But it's a style many in the west are using now.

Rack City is a dope ass beat, the song is catchy as fuck. from a rapping standpoint it sucks (doesn't even have rapping on it), but that's not the point of the song and we're judging producers not rappers. get your elitist ass outta here. from a sonic standpoint that's a banging ass beat and that's all there is to it. That's not dubstep lmfao, that's clearly inspired by E-40, Tyga said it on MTV when 40 was interviewed by Sway for his Block Brochures albums. DJ Mustard is the hottest producer out west right now. The thread is East VS West, not NY VS LA, so Droop-E deserves a mention, and you said, I quote "the west sounds too much like the mid-west. Every Cali producer is trying to be Kanye", so maybe you read it again. and that's inacurrate and exaggerated. Not many in the West are really going for the soulful sound though, I disagree, some have tried it at the time it blew up, like Sean-T when he produced Smile and Wassup for San Quinn & Messy Marv, but that was 7 years ago. right now i'd say peeps either go for Function Music (Mustard, Diamond Lane music), Modern Mobb Music (Livewire, Philthy Rich and stuff), or more for a throwback melodic sound ala Maybach (Messy Marv and his Kokaine Ballads from my 550). and you have Dom Kennedy, Casey Veggies, Odd Future, etc. with solid production throughout.

I don't agree, but I understand where it comes from with classic production from guys like Dre, Quik & Johnny J.

But as rappers, pure lyricists, the East greats are so much better.

thing is, lyricism in the west compared to the east nowadays doesnt really have much of a difference...if we were in the 80s, yea, but nowadays, there are just as many (if not more) lyrical cats out west than there is in the east. in fact, one could argue the best lyricists nowadays are from out west. even on a commercial scale, kendrick is at the front of the line when it comes to spittin lyrics.

Honestly thought we were strictly talking old school. Now it doesn't matter because artists from the West, like Kendrick, don't follow the same formula like they did back in the day.

So today, it's really just a toss-up between who your favorite artist is because they all come with a similar style, outside of a few artists there really isn't a defining East & West sound. If Kendrick didn't rep it & we didn't know, it wouldn't jump out at you that he repped West.

there are still lyrical rappers wit a traditional west coast sound...crooked i, locksmith, planet asia, defari, heiro, techniec, ras kass, saafir, tash, dilated, xzibit, yukmouth, tray deee.. as for old school lyricists from the west- kam, d.o.c, del, x-raided, fatlip, rbx, ol' school kurupt, paris come to mind.

Lyrically, new school rappers, the east is not even touching the west. Name one rapper better than Kendrick, better than the rest of Black Hippy. Hell Tyler, The Creator is one of the best under 30 out today. The closest in New York is the A$AP crew. But none of them are on the same level as LA right now.

Historically, we can argue for years, hell this board has been 12 years of this argument. But right now, in 2013, LA LYRICALLY>>>>NY Lyrically.

Yeah, the game's changed. I think that it's because over the years the west has been open to both East and Southern sounds in LA, were as in NY they were only open to NY, until the South took over. Now you have all of the under 30 NY rappers trying to sound like the South, and the LA rappers with Southern and Soulful beats but sounding like NY rappers. The Westcoast is in the post-Gangsta Rap era. And I hin kit's opened up a new sound and better lyrical content.

The Westcoast is in the post-Gangsta Rap era. And I hin kit's opened up a new sound and better lyrical content.

NYC really needs a true savior...not kendrick hahaha

Lyrically, new school rappers, the east is not even touching the west. Name one rapper better than Kendrick, better than the rest of Black Hippy. Hell Tyler, The Creator is one of the best under 30 out today. The closest in New York is the A$AP crew. But none of them are on the same level as LA right now.

Historically, we can argue for years, hell this board has been 12 years of this argument. But right now, in 2013, LA LYRICALLY>>>>NY Lyrically.

this is true...it's sad how things chance.  all the best rappers in NY are over 30 and closer to leaving the game and entering it

Joell Ortiz, Bada$$, Budden, Banks, Logic, Meek Mill, A$AP, the list can go on too. The West only has Kendrick and Ab as their forefront. I'll take Kemdrick as a rapper over everyone I named (besides Budden personally), but don't front like the East doesn't have more names going on.

Just because California takes up 95% of the West, doesn't mean NYC takes up that much of the East.

Joell Ortiz, 33 (my exact age)
Joey Bada$$, ain't done shit yet
Budden, 33 (my exact age)
Lloyd Banks, 31, AIN'T NEVER DONE SHIT
Logic, He has potential, let's see what he does
Meek Mill is from Philly
A$AP ain't up to Black Hippy.

Westcoast, Kendrick, Black Hippy, Taylor the Creator, Vince Staples, Problem (ignorant rapper pick of the day), Bad Lucc, Jonwayne (for the internet Hip-Hop nerds), Joey Fatts ('cause we need west coast A$AP peeps), DaVinci, fuck what you heard the West is where it is at right now.

I'm comparing LA and NY. And most everyone is all potential right now. And Black Hippy is a group, you have 1 group and 1 other guy. If you throw in Taylor the Creator for La, you basically have a wash. Both sides have older vets, many my age like Crooked I, Game, Ortiz, Budden, Banks, and then there is this bubbling of younger dudes ready to explode. On the west, it's been pretty consistent with one hit wonders, Cali Swag District, New Boyz, The Rej3ctz, Far East Movement. These artist were part of movements, which hit mainstream. This is a sign of when your culture is dominating. When I worked with high school kids, they were all about the Dougie and Jerk dance. Right now, LA culture is influencing Hip-Hop, the young rappers are better on the west and the mainstream rappers are doing their thing. It's a different world right now.

Crooked, Kurupt, Ras Kass, Xzibit etc. can spit with anyone

but the veterans on the west (Dre, Snoop, Cube etc) would get slaughtered by east coast contemporaries (Kool G Rap, Rakim, Nas etc)
exclude crooked I he is garbage.

WTF did you just say lol?? I'm just going to assume, you don't like Crooked ha.
nothin' to do wit liking him his music just don't appeal to me.
That's cool. I was just trippin because you said he was garbage. That's 100% false ha. You may not like the guy but his skill are undeniable.
that's debatable but if you like it that's cool.
What's debatable? Whether he's got skills or not lol? C'mon homie, let's be serious here. It's cool if you don't like him or his style but there's no debate. You say shit like that around some real hip hop heads, they're going to think you're stupid, my dawg. Really though ha. I'd keep comments like that to myself. Real talk ha

west coast music is simply just much more enjoyable than east coast shit, end of story

Indeed. The West has it right now. But on the real, comparing lyricist is pointless now a days. There's a shit load of great lyricist. It would be impossible to say who's the best. It would come down to preference.

The battle between the East and West is always "we have better lyrics" vs "we have better beats."

Are dudes like G Rap, Slick Rick, KRS and Rakim better lyricists than Snoop, Short, E-40 and the like? Of course. But, Hip Hop isn't just about the lyrics. If that was the case, guys like Canibus would be considered the Greatest. What it boils down do is discography. Not sales. Not individual verses or beats. The end product. I love KRS, 1 of the favorite emcees of all time. But, while he may destroy Snoop on the mic in a battle, he has never made an album as good as Doggystyle.

Also, when I think of emcees, it's more about what they're saying than how they're saying it. Ghostface, Scarface and Ice Cube to me are probably 3 of the best emcees ever lyrically and as a whole. They've put together some memorable verses and great albums. To me, the debate in music should never just boil down to who has the best lyrics or best beat. While I love guys like Ras Kass, Crooked I, Canibus & Chino XL, they do not have the ability to make lasting music. A hot verse here and there, but tell them to put together 13 Songs and they crumble.

Scarface + Geto Boys. Three 6 Mafia. UGK. Outkast. Goodie Mob. 8-Ball & MJG. Screwed Up Click. 2 Live Crew.

These are all legends. The South has A LOT of rich history and depth.

See, at that point, if we're adding Ed O, JMT, hell even Canibus, Chino and Lox, now we're just talking regional legends rappers.

I wouldn't come here and throw out names like Pastor Troy, Lil Keke, Fat Pat, etc.

A true Hip Hop will have a ton of influence on rappers from any region.

Canibus is well known in the industry, sure. But, that's industry. Normal everyday fans do not Canibus outside of the East Coast. They may have heard about him after he took out his notepad, but I think that hurts the case of him being a legend more than it helps.
