There are several accusations and untrue reasons about this war flying all over the place. I am a proud American, and I fully support this was. Please, before responding with insulting and idiotic replies, read the whole message.
Anyone who says that the U.S. is in Iraq for oil is correct and educated.
Anyone who says that the sole purpose the U.S. is in Iraq is oil, and that we're going to take over the oil, is uncorrect, ignorant, and not very bright.
Yes, a main reason the United States is warring with Iraq is because of oil. However, it is NOT the only reason, and NOT the most important reason.
We are in Iraq to do 3 important things, and will do them in this order:
1) Remove the current evil regime of Sadaam Hussein. He cares nothing for his people, and spends all the country's money on himself. The "government" of Iraq is corrupt and evil...end of story.
2) Replace the old government with a new and better government. Yes, it will most likely be a Democracy (But if the Iraqi's choose to go Communist or something other than Democracy, we won't stop them). Yes, we are going to put our own people in the government. Not to rule them, but because the U.S. knows its doing, and because we're educated enough to help them.
3) Once the new government is set up and in power, we go for the oil. We will NOT take over Iraq's oil and keep it for ourselves. What we will do is buy the oil, and let the new govt. sell oil to whoever it wants. Now, Iraq's main export(or only for that matter) is oil. Other countries buying this oil is Iraq's main, or only, means of economy. Basically, for the ignorant and dumb, its how Iraq makes all it's money.
Currently, the evil regime of Sadaam Hussein keeps all that money for itself, and uses it MAINLY on itself.
Now, lets put two and two together, and use that thing MOST of us have called logic.
If the current government keeps all the oil money for itself, and we take that govt. out and put in a fresh new one for the Iraqi people, then all the oil money will go to...THE IRAQI PEOPLE! This isn't rocket science people.
When we put in that new government ruled by the people, for the people, then start buying Iraq's oil, slowly but surely...we are making that Iraq and that new government more and more wealthy. We are turning a poor and corrupt country, into a wealthy and educated country. THIS IS HOW WE ARE HELPING THE IRAQI'S!
Some people would say that by going to war and killing people in order for the U.S. to help this desperate nation is the wrong course of action...and that diplomacy is the answer.
What they don't realize is that in this situation, diplomacy CANNOT and WILL NOT work. Yes, in other situations, diplomacy has worked. This is not one of those situations. Sadaam Hussein has had 12 years to comply with the UN, and he blatantly refused. If he has resisted and refused for 12 years...then what the fuck is a few more monthes going to do? NOTHING! The only thing it WILL do is make Sadaam that much more powerful.
So, the U.S. stepped up and said that force was the only way. Since the nations of the Security Council don't want to spend money on a war, they disagreed, and unanimously defeated the U.S.'s vote. However, because the U.S. knows what will happen if nothing is done, we invaded Iraq. That brings us to our current situation.
Those 3 reasons are why we are in Iraq. I know that after reading this article, theres going to be a bunch of people(Maestro, Agua, 7even, Tech, and Kaidy) that will jump all over this, disagree, point out how they're right and I'm wrong, and make insulting comments. I care not. This is the truth...and the truth hurts.

You want proof that the USA isn't always right?
During the cold war it claimed that liberal capitalist democracy is right and communism is wrong. This idea is wrong. Neither of these two economic ideas are right and neither are wrong, they are just different views on how countries economies should be run. They can both work, in different ways.
When Castro took power in Cuba the US government originally treated him as an ally until he came to America and met VP Nixon. Castro was a socialist at the time (not a communist). After Nixon met him, Nixon decided he was in fact a communist and demanded that the USA should have nothing to do with him. Castro then went back to Cuba (very pissed off) and decided to go to the USA's enemy, the USSR. This made Castro move from a national socialist to a communist. Did the USA know what was best here? No, what would have been best was to have Castro as an ally and not force him to go to the USSR. Was the USA's actions right? Again, no. They made what could have been an important ally into a very serious threat to the USA.
In fact, pretty much throughout the Cold War the USA was wrong about the USSR's intentions and misinterpreted her actions. That is way too much to write up now as i'm knackered from a long, hard days work, however Xearo if you want me to post them i will. However it won't be untill the weekend at the earliest and most probably not until next week as i am way to busy at the moment to go searching through all my old research, but by this time next week i'll definatly be able to put it up if you want me to.
If you're wondering why my post only uses the cold war as examples, well partly a coincidence as it just happened a couple of examples that came into my head were cold war related. Also because if you study the USA during Cold War and the situation it is in the world today, to say there a few similarities in the way the governments of then and now and their understanding and actions of world events would be an understatement.

THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH SPENDING OF MONEY. 80% OF THE FIRST GULF WARS EXPENSES WERE PAID BY COALITION MEMBERS. BECAUSE THAT WAR MADE SENSE. THIS DOESNT.

Also can you tell me what threat Sadaam and his regime has on my livelihood here in urban Amerikkka? Will Sadaam prevent me from working, paying bills, selling records, or even communicating with you on the internet? Emphatically no. I'm pretty sure Sadaam will not drop bombs on my residences in Los Angeles, Ohio, Michigan, and Toronto Canada. Prior to The Persian Gulf War, did YOU even care or know anything about Sadaam's threat on Amerikkka or any country that benefits from Amerikkkan foreign policy?

Well I probably shouldn't reply, since you usually just disregard my posts and call me names, but...
1) Yes Saddam and his regime are evil. Hopefully they will be deposed.
2) No. There is already incredible confusion in this area, and its very likely it will not be a democracy that is installed. The US has covertly and overtly helped new regimes get into power over the last 50 years, and a lot of the time the new governmetns are no better than the previous ones, they're just sympathetic to American interests. Know anything about Chile and Pinochet? Quite a terrifying evil regime, and its well known he was initially aided into office by the US.
The US government DOES NOT CARE about the non-white peoples of this world, or the poor, or those with no political freedoms. If it did don't you think it might try and clean up the ghettos and educate the masses of its own nation?
3) I don't think the US wants all the oil for itself, thats way too obvious. But it does want a firm footing in the Middle East to further its own interests and those of Israel. They've already sold the port of Umm Qasr to a US corporation. They've already planned an 'Oil for Food' program (A nice smokescreen). If you think the US doesn't want any profit out of this war, you're wrong.
Okay your points on the UN hold some water, it was never a great policing institution. But still, that gives the US no right to ignore it totally and do whatever they want without repurcussions. The US is not the most intelligent contry in the world, or the one with the best morals, who in the fuck gave them the right to jump into any country it thinks needs 'liberating'?
I also find it quite ridiculous they ignore the UN when going to war, but will soon turn to it to help clean up the mess when the war is finished.
Oh and your last comment just shows your ignorance. You invited people to question your theory, but then basically said you would ignore it anyway. Hey, isn't that how American democracy works?
