is m4a the same as mp4?? if so use Foobar does the trick for me when converting music files.

Goldwave didn't "read" the file. It was blank, but it works on iTunes

Hmmm...well the only other thing I can think of is, burn a CD with the track on it, then rip the track with CDex to make it an mp3. I have done it before myself when my parents have purchased tracks off of iTunes so I know it works.

I use dBpowerAMP Music Converter, it's not free but if you know how to use torrents you can illegally download it. It converts pretty much every single media format into any other format in about 5 seconds (for a normal size song). You just right click on any music file and say 'convert to mp3', works perfect.

m4a is an audio compression format, whereas mp4 is usually compressed video that also contains an audio stream (like Xvid, DivX movies)

I use that too, mine was free and legit ;D
But the program don't convert m4p
