Title: You know what the NBA is really missing?
Post by: .:DaYg0sTyLz:. on February 08, 2009, 04:00:09 PM
A good, nasty rivalry.  I always think about some of the old rivalries...Lakers/ Celtics....Bulls/Knicks.....Pistons/Everyone.   If you go back a few years the Lakers and Spurs had some good rivalry moments, the Lakers and Suns did also, and the Spurs and the Suns. But I dont know about any real nasty rivalries where the teams seem to really dislike eachother. I kinda miss it...

You have nobody right now.  The media is trying to force the Lakers/Celtics but it's nowhere good as the 80's.  When you have rivalries like that it just happens.  The media doesn't create it it's just meant to happen.  But this is happening in all sports though.  Maybe not so much baseball because of the history of some of the rivalries.  The media is killing sports.

The media is trying to force the Lakers/Celtics but it's nowhere good as the 80's.

they are definitely trying to force that because this happened directly after Spurs vs. Cavaliers

LeBron was good 2 years ago but had no supporting cast, up against the Spurs who they say draw no ratings

reaching those all-time lows in ratings and then stumbling upon an opportunity to exploit NBA past with BOS-LAL playing great fell in their laps

it definitely helps the NBA that they force it though, can't always blame them

and with LeBron more of a monster than 2 years ago playing on par with the big boys helps them even more, it looks better than a few years ago

the Showtime-Boston rivalry was a little before my time but I'm smart enough to know that the present time is not the same

however if you're from Los Angeles or Boston it's very big news as far as local sports though, lots of people follow the games

so you can understand how they capitalize off that.... the beginning of the season was even more hype out the gate

to say there is no fire to the rivalry is a bit of an understatement though, fans of these 2 teams really fuckin hate each other

I read in the paper that game the other night was the best ratings for a game on TNT in over 12 years, Finals did well, so people I guess are interested

Lakers vs Suns wasn't that great...

considering the Laker team was gay and Phoenix beat them in the playoffs 2 years in a row

hardly something the NBA could build on

Lakers/Kings was good, it  kept the Lakers busy until they won the title. The closest is the Lakers/Celtics, well actually Odom and whatever beef his been having with KG lately. I wish the Cavs and Magic could develop into something, that'd be a rivalry that'd last. Right now, I don't see anything too great, the Pacers and Pistons aren't as heated or relevant anymore, Kings suck, and New York fans are cheering for the other teams. Spurs are getting old, Boston is not close behind, and the Lakers and Cavs main players are too friendly.

i dunno, i think its just the way the NBA likes it. Nice and wholesome.  Family oriented yah know?  the good rivalries have slowly disappeared, and Im sure the brawl in Detroit made Stern want to create this fuckin "lovefest" going on in the league even more.  Not to mention, free agency having players moving around so much...they dont stay in one place long enough to hate eachother. AND, its very rare that two teams stay good enough for a long enough time to develop a rivalry.

The fans love a good rivalry and I'm sure Stern does too. Look how tough he's trying to make the Lakers and Celtics a rivalry again. More people watch when they pick a side to root for/against. In fact I think the last LA BOS game had the highest rating of any nba game since 96 or something like that. I think the main reason there aint many rivalries right now is because the last generation is fading out and new teams are developing and new stars are carving their niche. There will be new rivalries soon enough.

That shows how powerful Kobe is. Dude was so good that people really thought it was fair to call a 2-7 matchup a "rivalry". We were the number 7 team two years in a row...we weren't supposed to beat them. If we play them in the playoffs this year people will think we're bitches if we showboat like they did when they beat us.

You may think I'll be off topic but there are few rivalries nowadays because the way the game is called is GAY imo  ... these Bulls/Pistons , Bulls/Knicks , Knicks/Heat in the late 90es were the shit because teams were able to play extra physical ... good battles in the paint , hard fouls will lead to technical fouls , cheap shots so hatred and rivalries ... that latest C's - Lakers was the shit coz some cheap shots happened , still way too many weak fouls were called ...

the best games to watch in that sense i think are the hawks v celtics games. theyve had some really testy games over the last couple of seasons. of course indiana v detroit was also nice a few years ago.

I used to watch a lot of games from other teams too, but now 99% of the games i watch are Lakers games, yeah. They show NBA games when it's 2 AM or 4:30 AM here, so it's hard for me to find watching a Bobcats vs Timberwolves game interesting, in those conditions. I download good games, tho. Like Celtics vs Spurs, i've downloaded it and watched it on the pc.

Anyway i know it's nowhere near the rivalries of the past but....

(chek the next post..)

please. The current Lakers/Celtics "rivalry" (which should be used VERY loosely) is hardly a vicious rivalry lol.  Im talkin teams who genuinly dislike eachother. Chances are, for that to happen it will have to be a rivalry within the same division or conference. The Lakers and Celtics simply dont play eachother enough to really DISLIKE eachother.

Outside of Odom and KG, I think ToNe's right. I mean, I have no idea what Odom's beef with KG is, but his been on him hard and almost dirty for the last year. Other than that, I'm shocked Ray Allen hasn't tried to get into Kobe's head more, as Allen and Kobe once had a heated rivalry. Instead it's Kobe putting Rondo in his place.

^^^^ That Lamar/KG thing has started in the 1st game of the regular season of last season , KG blocked Lamar layup and said sth like "get the fuck out of here  with that weak shit" then Lamar chased the loose ball and throw Allen out of the bounds ...

Allen getting in Kobe head ? He's Kobe bitch , maybe he does not want this to happen again  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d16maeHOArM

... talking shit with Kobe won't bring anything good , unless you want him to drop 50 on your ass in the next game

Kobe dropping 50 isnt always the best thing for the Lakers as a team.  Thats the point of getting into Kobe's head. Hoping you can use his ego against him and get Kobe to revert back to shooting on every touch cus he's taking your shit talkin personal.

I totally agree .... I don't think history shows it is a good tactic though ... he's more likely to go bananas during the next meeting and not in the same game in this era ... but it was true in his early seasons ...

Number 1 team by SI and ESPN, and best record in the NBA.. I'd say that's pretty important. The title of the Yankee's of the NBA, that's pretty important, and the only westcoast team that gets coverage in Sportscenter, that's pretty important.

true. the thing is with college basketball, especially Duke and N.C. is that through recruiting they have the ability (for the most part) to always be great. The NBA is so up and down, that rivalries seem to last for a few years, then die out because one or both teams start to suck.  Problem is, the NBA doesnt even seem to get too many good rivalries even for a 3 or 4 yr period.
but the NBA should have a better one.

God Damn, you mentioned my first love, someday the Raiders will get back to the promise land...  :'(

Now for the Lakers, here's the thing, of course people run their mouth here, you have Sccit rallying people up, you got people who love to hate the Lakers, and you put them all in the same place and it's going to be as it is here. Once the Lakers win 1 or 2 titles, it's going to be the same shit. When the Lakers where in their 3 peat, you still had Rod and them talking shit 'cause they felt their Kings got robbed. When your Spurs were winning, no one was really talking shit 'cause the Spurs were damn good, but some people like Sccit were still trying to rep for their team. It's all good, it's sports, fans do that stuff. Myself, I ain't dump enough to say a 3 peat is better than 4 in 7 years. But at the same time, I still root for my Lakers, and hope that Kobe gets that 4th ring. I also know that this year the Lakers have had Gasol all year, last year the Celtics swept the Lakers and this year the Lakers swept the Celtics and Cavs, so things are looking up. ESPN had two rankings this week, one with the Lakers number 1 and the other with Boston number 1 even though the Lakers have a better record and swept Boston this year. I have no beef with other teams, but I got beef with the Lakers are ranked number 3 even though they have the best record and swept the so called number 1 team. That's hate, and that's when I enter debates.

The Celtics and Lakers genuinely hate each other...Sasha wont wear green and Ariza said he'd rather kill himself than play for the Celtics before his career's over. watch more games.

keep tryin man...you just want the Lakers to be so much more important then they are lol

Number 1 team by SI and ESPN, and best record in the NBA.. I'd say that's pretty important. The title of the Yankee's of the NBA, that's pretty important, and the only westcoast team that gets coverage in Sportscenter, that's pretty important.

not more important then anyone else. Especially considering...how many years since the last title?  If you want the title of Yankees of the NBA lol go ahead...you can wait that long for a title also. Joke

I don't know about the Yankee's next title, but I can say that the Lakers are looking good this year.

nothing matters unless it happens.  Laker fans thought they looked good last year, and they got mopped in the finals by a real team.  Lakers fans thought they looked good when they tried to beef up their team with a bunch of Hall of Famers, and they got mopped in the finals by a real team.  Thing is, especially on this forum, Laker fans run their mouth all year long about how great they are, about how theyre gonna win the title, how theyre head n shoulders above everyone else (lol) and the reality is, its been how many years since any of that was true?  You and I are Raider fans, fuck man, i bleed Black n Silver...but as a REAL fan, im not stupid enough to say that we are gonna win the Superbowl every fuckin year. Thats not a fan, thats just retarded. I know when my team is bad, when theyre good, when theyre great. If you think and say your team is great every year (NIK), youll be wrong 95% of the time. Bad percentage.

Yeah man. The thing is, there are more then just Laker fans and Laker haters. Theres the largest group and thats the one in the middle that is neither a Laker fan nor a Laker hater.  You got a lot of over dramatic Laker fans who would love to believe that everyone who doesnt love the Lakers, must hate them. lol. When in reality, a lot of us (most of us) just look at them as another team in the West.  I dont see that many Laker haters on this forum.  I see more people that just get annoyed with the lip flapping done all year even when the team hasnt proven shit.  Its comical.  If the Lakers win a title this year, good for them. That would make them the best this year. Just like the years we won. If the Celtics win again, good for them. Theyre the best 2 years in a row.  But like I said, I try to never run my mouth so much during the season (and Ive had plenty of reason to throughout the last decade), and I dont make a million excuses every year that my team loses in the playoffs either.  Its just crazy to me to think of anyone not being able to admit they arent the best, even when their team hasnt won a title in 6 yrs

Lakers/Celtics are on there way, but they arent like Yankees/Redsox level yet lol.

even so, i cant see it being the same. I think its just the way the league itself has changed. Its like they all are friends lol

all friends? did you watch the last Lakers/Celtics matchup? LOL

I use to stay out too, but of course as of late it's been kind of crazy and so I had to put my 2 cents in. I mean, based on agreeing with Sccit alone made me sit on the sidelines... lol. But then I was like, what people are saying ain't right. You know me man, I was a Shaq guy so post 2004 was a little tough on me as a Laker fan, I stayed with them 'cause since the days of Magic I bleed gold and FORUM BLUE... ha ha ha. If you don't know Forum Blue, you ain't a true Laker fan. So Sccit got himself into some shit, but others want to hate, even ESPN is hating. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerranking

The Boston and Laker rivalry was renewed ever since KG chose Boston over LA...it's been brewing since Ray Allen talked shit about Kobe...it's been stamped ever since Gasol was acquired...the exclamation point was Odom tackeling Ray Allen last season...the shit that happened in the Finals, with the Celtics showboating and what not was more than a confirmation that this was THE rivalry...Now, with the games this season, it's just more shit up in the mix. Odom bitching Garnett, Doc Rivers getting fined, Kobe treating Rondo like a lil boy, top 2 teams in the league...HISTORY BETWEEN THE FRANCHISES...all that shit, you're retarded if you think this isn't a legit rivalry.

if this is the best rivalry the NBA is going to have...then I might as well not give a shit about rivalries anymore.  Ive seen bigger rivalries at the Y lol

In general, the Lakers and Celtics are huge rivals. The franchises are not just battling over rings, they are battling over who is the greatest franchise in NBA history.

im talkin about THIS years Laker/Celtic "rivalry". Past rivalries between the two have been amazing. And both teams this year are very good. But not exactly a heated rivalry...to anyone other then Laker/Celtic fans.  It just doesnt have that feel (or any so called rivalry right now) of old Laker/Celtic rivalries...or like I said, Bulls/Knicks...etc.

Apparently, muthafucka can't comprehend the magnitude of the bad blood between these two franchises. he doesn't realize what's at stake and the meaning behind all this...he thinks this is like some new thing ESPN is tryna hype. LMAO. TONE, Lakers-Celtics is not a rivalry in the making, this is THEE rivalry of basketball history, and the fact that we're the two top teams of our conference and met in the Finals last year solidifies this as a legit rivalry. The Celtic-Laker rivalry is ETERNAL.

Lakers/Celtics is THE rivalry of decades ago. It just BARELY got renewed last year (one year lol), and it is nowhere NEAR as intense as it used to be, or as other rivalries of the past between other teams has been. Im not saying that this current little "rivalry" will never be that intense, nobody knows. Im saying right now, its not. Obviously. Lakers/Celtics 2008-2009 is not the same rivalry as Bird/Magic's Celtics and Laker squads.  They are completely different teams in different eras. Its like saying if the Bulls and Knicks meet in the playoffs, it will be the same rivalry as it was when MJ was in the league lol. Obviously...it wouldnt.

It's not intense? Have you even watched the last two Lakers-Celtics matchup? The energy is intense...the arena gets louder than most playoff games. shits crazy. Bulls and Knicks don't have the marquee match-ups nowadays to make a true rivalry interesting. what'll you have, Ben Gordon vs Nate Robinson? When Celtics acquired the stars and we acquired the stars, and we ONCE AGAIN both became the top teams of our conference, it was on...we got Kobe vs. Pierce, Odom vs Allen, Gasol vs. KG, all that shit. shits gettin real. dont get mad Spurs aint involved in shit...PeACe
