FINALLY...
-
The New York version of Young Jeezy. This album isn't even New York, it's more of a southern album with a new york citizen. He minds me of Jim Jones as well. The skits are a bit corny. All the Above is the brother track Live Ya Life. Very similar but I'd rather have positive music reaching the masses. I don't think Maino has carved his niche yet. Unless he'll be like Jim Jones and just jump popular trends, he needs to develop a sense of who he is. It was an aiight album.
I'll tell you want Budden's album was horrible mixed and mastered. Runaway Slave final sound is much better than Pray For Me. Budden needs to get his shit mixed and mastered again.
-
After one spin, it's ok, average debut album
worth keeping:
million bucks
remember my name
gangsta
all the above
hi hater
celebrate
-
i hate it when albums get pushed back so many times and when it finally gets released it sounds like it has been put together in a few days. somewhat boring album, funny ass hooks and a lot of corny songs on there.
-
i'm actually suprised...not as weak/typical as i thought it would be...
-
link please

Dope shit, listening now...doesnt sound bad...some shit i noticed. Listen to this beat by Maino, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJkPNEmsQAw and then listen to this Budden beat, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHtwU7xFLRY lol, same beat. Then listen to Mainos joint off this album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEf9nZHrdtw, see how hes got that dude talkin like that as the judge and then this Budden song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNxcQrsqBpQ and hes got God talkin in that voice too AND Maino used this beat on his album too for "Runaway Slave" LOL, whats goin on here? Did Maino let Budden use the "Til I Die" beat in exchange for the "Pray For Me" beat or something?
-
It was nice... not better than the Willy debut though IMO
-
Decent album. A step in the right direction for N.Y.

Really? I think it's a step backwards. It's not New York sounding at all.

I know what you're saying, I'm getting a bit of the vibe though, something that Jada, Cam, etc. didn't have. It's quite a cohesive album imo. Still, I think All The Above is the only one making the cut on my harddrive.. Really liked Floating and Runaway Slave though.
-
LOL Maino
-
Gonna have to find a link for this, interested in seeing what he brough to the table
-
Kept about half the songs, my fav song was "Floating" though, prob the best Maino song ive heard yet!!!

I agree that it's cohesive. I just think the atmosphere of the album is more southern influenced then it is New York. It's not a grimey sounding album, it's more polished and smooth. I understand the Cam comparison and even recent Jada. Hell, he reminds me of Jim Jones and Young Jeezy put together.
My real point is that New York needs to reinvent itself but hi-jacking the south isn't the direction I want to see it go.
-
That's an interesting point about the budden thing.Add in maino took the phrase hi hater from Joey

How do you know lol? I know ive seen his gf say it once or twice, but thats about it. Fucked up if he stole that too, smths def up lol!!!

He used to say it tracks a long time ago.I'm sure one of the hardcore budden fans can hit you up with a specific song

He's been using it as an adlib for the longest time in loads of songs. If you need some proof, this is circa 2003. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgMCOcKPUx8
Who really cares though, phrases catch on, ppl make songs about the phrase. Nothing wrong there..

I overstand that. Some of the tracks felt West coast-ish to me too. But what I heard in Maino's project compared to others was he at least tryed to implement a bit of the NY sound, even tho he was using the kind of production he was using.. If that makes any sense. Still work to be done, but I think Maino will help NY come back.. At the very least he got a product into the stores..

Lets hear it anyone hook up?

-
yeah "Let's Make A Movie" is actually a dope song for the ladies... I like that joint
I made a thread about it saying it should be Maino's next single but I guess that thread failed lol
-
So apparently they aren't releasing the album in Canada until September.Wtf?That's just bizzare

LOLLLLL, this albums gonna flop pretty hard im pretty sure, not saying that him releasing it in Canada woulda made a big difference or anything. This was a hella sloppy release and to think he had all that time to drop it!!!
-
The record company fucked up horribly on this release. They should have dropped it when hi hater was big
-
ya floating is the shit

ya floating is the shit
Ive been playing the shit outta it!!!

Yup. Or right after All The Above was buzzing.. These suits afraid to jump, The promotion/exposure was there, they just did it in the most horrible timeframe. And I don't know what to say about the Canadian distribution, that's just messed for a major label release.
I'ma keep bumping this thread Stan-style for my boy Maino....
-
The album is nice....
-
I Can Bump This All The Way Through. I Think It's A Dope Album. I Don't Know Why The Label Fucked Up Releasing This. I Been Bumping It For A Few Days. 8) "Kill You" Is Probly The Dopest Cut On The Album!! IMO
Blaze 1
-
What? We've been waiting several years for a proper album from this dude, and we get this?
I find this album boring after first listen. The beats are meh, flow is nothing to brag about about and he got little to no charisma in my opinion.
Might grow on me though.
-
I Agree He Has Little Charisma. But I Still Think This Is A Dope Album.
-
Thing with Maino is that he isn't a typical punchline NY rapper which is fine but he doesn't really have enough charisma to getaway with it. I could see myself listening to one or two tracks in the future but i'm guessing Jada and Bustas albums will be more bumpable to me (in terms of albums that are in the same style).
-
I dunno, he's no lyrical giant, and doesn't flow like 50, but I like what he's talking about on alot of the songs.
-
Just checked on Hits Daily Double and he's sold 17k but it doesn't show how much % is in. Damn that's a flop imo, anything over 35k wouldve been good. Seeing as Jim Jones did only 43k then it seems right I guess. Don't think he'll be happy though but I'm glad it finally dropped!!!

Fuck thats a massive flop, I was hoping he would push atleast 50k, 2 big singles, and the first new NYC artsit to drop in a long time. Damn, noone else has a chance

Jim Jones is a established artist man and he only moved 43k first week so it really wasnt a big surprise!!!

The album was pushed back a couple of times. Should have dropped last year when Hi Hata was getting some burn.

Well dropping it back then woulda kinda been premature. I dont think many people wouldve bought the album sololy based on that one song, he wasnt established enough back then. Now that hes gotten more exposure with more singles, vids, the interviews and all of that stuff people know more about him and what hes about. Now i think was a good time to drop it, shoulda came out a lil earlier when "All The Above" was blazin then it wouldve been perfect!!!

true but these days all these delays just kill the momentum a artist is building and before ya know it a album comes and goes without much said.
-
I disagree. I think if you drop your album just after the peak of your single, it will do well. I think for a new artist, the time when I am most amped up to buy their shit is right after they drop a hot ass joint (most likely your single).
Drop a mixtape for buzz and get the underground goin.
Drop your video/single.
DON'T drop anything else except for new singles (Keep the fans fiending for that exclusive music that's gonna be on ur album)
Do your promotion/marketing in the time between you single and your album. Then DROP THE ALBUM.
It's a perfect timespan, but when these labels/artists start fucking around with delays you fuck the timeline up and it's unrecoverable from there.. You don't need to release "buzz music" if your timeline is set so the fans never lose their buzz for you! You really got make sure your label believes in you and is dedicated to your schedule. You should have your album complete with the singles before the first joint leaks. They say you can't control what the fans are gonna eat up, and that you gotta have a strong single to recoup the money? Wrong, major labels can make any song work if they think it's a hit, it's just all about the timing.
-
damn even Ace hood is selling more than him. I know ace hood got an album out already and def jam wouldve copped some cds but still. Maino had the hits - maybe he'll do better when people realise its in stores...

Yah i feel you on that too, that would work aswell!!!
Mainos final numbers were 17,187, so i those were the official numbers from yesterday. Ace Hood sold 21, 584. Mainos gotta be pissed about his numbers!!!
-
shocked to see Ace Hood push more numbers :-\

Yeah. But Ace Hood already had an album out already right? I guess he's got some longetivity edge there... He's a South artist, which gives him an edge (He is right?) And he's on DefJam (I think?) which has a better marketing/promotion machine for Urban artists than Atlantic. Still I never knew that guy's album was coming out cept for when I saw it on blogs. I'm really interested to know if his sales were mostly region-based, or an even distribution through-out the country...
Comparision: Cam did 42K, Kiss did 142K.
I really expect Fab to do something above 200K.

How come Ace is higher on Billboard 200 but Maino higher on R&B and Rap charts?

I'm Dissapointed Wit This Weeks #'s....Thats For Damn Sure!

I almost missed out on this one and would've never checked if The Leak with his acquired taste wasn't so positive about it. Been listening to this for a few days now while jogging and I have to say that it's a dope album from top to bottom. Not your typical mainstream album with random tracks thrown together, he tried to make a cohesive album with a theme to it (his life story) and I think he succeeded. Even the skits aren't pointless but serve as some sort of narrator between tracks.
As far as Maino, he might not be a super MC but he's a quality songwriter with a good ear for beats. I've read that he only sold 18.000 copies which is a shame, if this was released in the 03 Curtis era he would've sold a lot more (his style is similar to 50's).

Only already established rappers sell records now

+1, I been bumpin' this at the gym as well, or when I'm just cruisin' 8)
-
I like the fact that it's cohesive and the skits fit well as Meho said, but I can't really get too much into it. No bad trakcs (minus a small handful) but many 3/5 tracks.
-
I like that its an album. It has a very cohesive feel with the whole cinematic story feel to it.Most albums nowadays just feel like random songs thrown together.its not a great album but well worth the listen
