MEZZANINE
(1998)

(http://www.musicmatic.de/M/Massive1a.jpg)  (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=33C6CHXY)

"The coolest song Iīve ever heard", was a Rolling Stones journalistīs initial reaction to the albumīs stand-out cut "Teardrop". "A taste of the future of pop music" is the description youīll find on amazon.com (http://amazon.com), and among trip-hop fans, the album is worshipped as part of the "holy trinity" of the genre. It is safe to say that "Mezzanine" is both a critically acclaimed and widely popular album.

In 1991, before bands like Portishead or Morcheeba even existed, Massive Attack, formed by members of the Wild Bunch Sound System, a crew of MCīs and DJīs organizing parties in their home town Bristol, popped up in the music scene with an album called "Blue Lines". The CD compiling their innovative blend of jazz, funk, soul and dub samples was labelled a masterpiece instantly - the band, at that time, was completly unknown to the vast majority of the British music scene. So was their sound. Yet it didnīt take the music industry long to coin a new term for the music, referring both to its atmospheric and slightly psychedelic sonic landscapes and the roots and technique of its sampling: trip-hop.

While other artists like Portishead or Tricky followed the bandīs footsteps during the next few years, turning trip-hop into a more and more desillusionized and depressive sound, Massive Attack were having a hard time trying to live up to their debutīs success. It was in 1998, the music style already being on the brink of becoming worn out, that they came back with their most gloomy and most hardly acessible record. "Mezzanine" is no more just a potpourri of well-known to exotic samples, but a dark trip through the sonic landscape of Bristol, on which melancholy is the happiest feeling youīll be confronted with.

From the subliminally menacing start of the opener "Angel" to the distorted guitars and the seemingly nervous rapping on "Risingson" to the threatening voice on "Inertia Creeps" and beyond, "Mezzanine" is chock full of moments and strangely evocative sonic details that might give you the chills. Itīs hard to forget the nightmarishly sung "dream on" on "Risingson" or not let the dismal atmosphere on at least half of the album get to you. The title track and the long "Group Four" might be the most impressive examples of why this album might indeed have contributed considerably to providing the foundations for a lot of what was - and still is - to come in electronic pop music; the eight-minute epic coming in right before the close-out is a brillantly weird, psychedelically dark piece of progressive rock bordering techno, but never deteriorating into anything that might become redundant after a few listens - actually, a whole lot of listening is needed to get a good view of the picture drawn by the three-man group and their guest appearances and to feel the albums moody, latently depressive atmosphere.

While the album as a whole may come in as almost violently dark, some tracks come closer to creating the feeling of a melancholic rainy day than of an absolutely hopeless situation. "Black Milk" wonīt get your funky party started, but it is, in comparison, not as viciously insane and loopy as many other tracks on the album. "Teardrop" is the song that remains many peopleīs favorite and one of the most skillful compositions in trip-hop up to this day. It is, in a way, quite simple, but the way Cocteau Twins guest star Elizabeth Fraser lays down her high, yet soothing vocals over the trackīs slowly developping melodic background, intertwining with its lazy drum pattern and occasional low-pitch samples, will impress anybody who would ever listen to trip-hop. The coolest song ever? Maybe. However, this is one of the coolest albums ever made.

Knuckles: Artists sampled are (from what the booklet says): The Cure, Velvet Underground, Isaac Hayes and John Holt. As soon as I can hook up, I will hook up...I just need a program and then youīll get the whole album....(EDIT: sorry, I read the sample shit wrong, however, like I said, youīll get everything when Iīm capable of hooking up)

Yung Locc: ^^ (as for hook-ups). The style is basically referred to as "trip-hop" or sometimes "Bristol sound" (cause it was invented in the english city of Bristol). Thereīs a strong electronic influence, but it has rock and hiphop elements in it. You canīt really imagine how it sounds unless you heard itI guess

lol Luke: I was the second one who wanted to do a list, I suggested it a while ago, before any list except Knucklesī existed. It ainīt my fault that we got a bunch of other ones now, but personally I like them

JAKE:

It doesnīt surprise me that you donīt agree, but I want to cover ALL genres. How do you define a īgoodī album? All the albums you listed fall into categories that are pretty different from the one Massive Attack is in; "OK Computer" comes closest to this style of music, everything else is COMPLETELY different.

there is barely an album in your list that came out after 1990...there is nothing that would have to do with the very interesting developpment of electronic music in the UK; yet, trip-hop, jungle, garage, dīnīb, house etc. did indeed play an important role in the 90īs and even the new milleniumīs club scene and "Mezzanine" was one of the most important and ground-breaking releases of this music style...

Your list is a compilation of a lot of pompous RockīnīRoll, some funk/soul/RīnīB classics and barely anything else. That wouldnīt do "music" as a whole justice. It wouldnīt be hard for me to set up the list you set up, but Iīm trying to make one that covers more than yours would have.

I donīt wanna say this album is "better than" what you listed (and you know exactly some of those albums are gonna pop up), but, yes, it can compete IMO. So many people have a rock bias when it comes to "greatness". Also, some of the albums on your list are overrated in MY opinion and it shows clearly that you got a weakness for pompous, bombastic rock albums. Iīm not critisizing that, only I wanna say that, unlike you, I think theyīre not all automatically better than this subtly haunting beauty of an album right here.

By the way, in the Rolling Stones list (and they do have a rockīnīroll bias), the other great Massive Attack album was ranked higher than:

The Doors - The Doors
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Metallica - Metallica
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
The Who - Tommy
Guns īN Roses - Use Your Illusion
Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold AsLove
John Lennon - Imagine
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life
Prince - Purple Rain (that no. 1 of yours was no. 264 of theirs)
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Led Zeppelin - III
Led Zeppelin - IV
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
Sly & The Family Stone - Thereīs A Riot Goinī On

some of those albums are hundreds of ranks lower than Massive Attackīs. Thatīs a whole bunch of musicians and professional journalists who made that list. So, you see, Iīm not the only one who takes that band seriously....

IīLL TRY TOI GET THAT LINK STUFF FIXED WHEN I GOT TIME, RIGHT NOW IīM BUSY, BUT TOMORROW MAYBE. SORRY

white boy: Yeah, I donīt agree with the RS list either, Iīm just saying that IMO itīs not like Massive Attack is a fuckin joke compared to all those big rock dinosaur bands, and that Iīm not alone with my opinion...Jakeīs list got a lot of great stuff on it, but it does not cover enough IMO. Iīll probably list a few more albums that certain people will find appalling in a greatest ever list, itīs just that, unlike some people on this board, I donīt hand out bonus points to gigantic rock albums for the mere fact that theyīre gigantic rock albums. In MY opinion, there are ska, reggae, electronic and even hiphop releases that CAN compete with those...not with the very best but with some of them...peace

Personally i wouldn't even put this album in a top 100 list, however it's kind of refreshing to see an "obscure" album mentioned as it makes ya reconsider your own personal opinions on the album instead of just disregarding it just as an okay album.

I tend to find the usual lists pretty boring with the same artists that get mentioned over and over again. There's no doubt that 85% of them belong there, however from a reading point of view you can read quite a lot of different lists and it's like you've seen the order 10x before.

It's not the magazine's fault. The industry more or less picks the lists. The voters for those lists are a bunch of people from all different parts of the music world. From 60s producers to 90s rappers.
