NEW YORK (AP) -- Kobe Bryant was suspended one game without pay by the NBA on Tuesday for striking San Antonio's Manu Ginobili in the face.
Bryant was to miss Tuesday's game against the New York Knicks, leaving the Lakers without their leading scorer when they opened an eight-game road trip.
The incident occurred with 2.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers' 96-94 overtime loss to the Spurs on Sunday.
Bryant is averaging 28.4 points, 5.5 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

What happened was that Kobe was foulded by Ginobli while shooting a jumper. Kobe's arms flailed out from the contact and Kobe inadvertantly hit Ginobli in the face with his back hand. It was not intentional. It's the difference between turning around and accidentally hitting someone vs balling up your fist and socking somone. Big difference.

Disgusting...If it's Wade, he goes to the line for the win...No doubt in my mind that Kobe and the Lakers are playing against more than 5 players each night. Kobe's eyes NEVER left the basket. Not only was it completely inadvertent, but nothing was even called on the play and he even came over to see if Manu was okay. It's a natural reaction to flail your arms to draw a foul. Kobe Bryant said he was "shocked" by his one-game suspension for hitting Manu Ginobili in the face on Sunday.
Bryant said he unintentionally elbowed him and felt "terrible" about the play. However, Bryant said he can't believe he was suspended.
"I haven't seen a precedence for this. There's unintentional elbows that take place in a game all the time," Bryant told reporters at Madison Square Garden.
Bryant hit Ginobili while trying to defend a shot with 2.7 seconds remaining.
"I'm blown away by it. It makes no sense," Bryant said.
Bryant's suspension also surprised Lakers coach Phil Jackson.
"I have been a little disappointed with how Kobe has been treated as a premier player," Jackson said.
Bryant was not ejected for the incident and finished with 31 points in the 96-94 loss.
With Bryant suspended, the Lakers will open an eight-game road trip without their leading scorer.
Bryant is averaging 28.4 points, 5.5 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

Kobe has BEEN KNOWN as the best player in the league who gets rookie treatment from the refs for years...We've lost a good share of games on obvious bad calls and/or no-calls! Opposing players get no suspensions for doing stuff that is way worse against us pretty much every game! But barring the unlikeliest turn of events, Bryant was officially banned from Madison Square Garden for the Los Angeles' Lakers only visit of the season to play the Knicks.
The suspension, for elbowing Manu Ginobili of the Spurs while Bryant was attempting a jump shot late in the Lakers' game against the Spurs on Sunday, caught Bryant completely off-guard.

Players association officials said it was highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for a player to be suspended for inadvertent contact.
"We're asking for an immediate hearing, and given Kobe's availability in New York, he's offered to meet with the commissioner or appropriate league officials to review the tape and explain what happened," union spokesman Dan Wasserman said. "Kobe can be at the league office on literally 10 to 15 minutes notice."

Damn the NBA is way fucking wrong about this incedent.If you look at the play Manu blocked Kobes shot but while Kobe was coming down it looked as if though he stuck his arm out so Manu couldnt get to the live ball after it had been blocked.

I couldn't find a clear video of the incident, and I know all of you Laker fans will hate me, but it looks like Kobe did take a wider than usual follow through after being blocked.
With that said, I don't think it deserves a suspension like Stern does. I'm sure if he got his way, the NBA would look more like the WNBA. Basketball is a contact sport and it's not like Kobe actually took a swing on Ginobli, so if the refs don't call it, then it's not a problem.

Granted, this vid isn't the NBA, but it was every bit as controversial to those who follow Big XII basketball. Just a couple weeks ago Oklahoma was playing Texas Tech. OU's Longar Longar was trying to clear out when he had the ball and cracked the defender right in the face. He said it was unintentional, and was suspended for 2 games. Agreed that basketball is a physical sport, but I think they're trying to have players have some accountability for what they do on the court.
And all the OU boards are still crying about a conspiracy too.

Either way, I got the gist of the situation and it clearly looks like Kobe swung his arm back. It could have definitely been a failed attempt at blocking out and I doubt that if Kobe wanted to hit someone, he'd play it off like it was "unintentional". I'd have to see the video in a better resolution for sure before making a concrete statement though.

It's the same because A) LL swore it was unintentional B) It was an elbow to the face. Now they were both doing different things, but clearing out using your elbows is done in every game. So it's very likely that its incidental contact, and difficult / impossible to prove it was malicious. In fact it's much more common than smashing the shit outta somebody's face on a follow through on a jumper. But the bottom line is that he got suspended for two games for making a basketball move.
So getting suspended for a game for what Kobe did isn't a tragedy or a conspiracy. Shit like this happens all the time. You guys only take notice when it affects your team.

The brawl was WELL underway before Melo threw the punch. Nate Robinson is more responsible for what happened in NY than anybody. Hell you could probably name 3 other guys more responsible for what happened than Melo, including Isiah.
Here's whats clearly happening in my opinion. When a superstar in the league fucks up, they're gonna throw the book HARD. They have to be hardest on the stars in situations like this because those are the ones that get all the pub. Nobody gives a fuck if Nate Robinson or Antonio McDyess get suspended. But KG, Melo, and Kobe? They are THE ELITE players in the league and they are constantly under a microscope. So if those guys fuck up in the slightest, they're gonna pay. It's not just Kobe / Lakers that this happens to.

Granted, this vid isn't the NBA, but it was every bit as controversial to those who follow Big XII basketball. Just a couple weeks ago Oklahoma was playing Texas Tech. OU's Longar Longar was trying to clear out when he had the ball and cracked the defender right in the face. He said it was unintentional, and was suspended for 2 games. Agreed that basketball is a physical sport, but I think they're trying to have players have some accountability for what they do on the court.

Well we can speculate all we want about what would have happened if it was Wade this happened to, but it's just speculation. But here's something else I've been thinking too: IF Kobe was flopping, wouldn't he have bitched to the ref's that he was fouled on the play? You know, like when he bricked that dunk at the end of regulation he was jumpin up and down and screaming at the refs, but it didn't matter because he was bailed out by that three? On this play, he obviously gets stuffed by Manu and flails his arms in what could either be frustration or an attempt at a flop. But if it's a flop, he doesn't fall down, he doesn't complain of a foul which would make sense if he was indeed flopping. It looks more to me like he got stuffed and flailed his arms in frustration.
Again, there's really no way to say if he was malicious or not. But I can see how someone could watch the tape and think it was. Just how I could see how someone could watch that OU vid and think it was malicious and someone else watching could say it was completely incidental.

I'm saying that it can't be proven either way. It could very easily be construed as malicious, just as it could easily be justified that it was inadvertant. I'm arguing that this isn't the first time things like this have happened and have resulted in suspensions. With that being the situation, I fail to see the conspiracy. Suspensions are very controversial because people inevitably say "well so and so did this, why wasn't he suspended?" I guarantee you that people in Denver were BEYOND belligerent when Melo got suspended for as long as he did. They're coming down VERY hard on these guys across the board - I don't see it as picking on Kobe in this situation.

GO and check out some NON-Laker team message boards and see if there isn't a shitload of NON-Laker fans saying this suspension is uncalled for. In the wake of recent incidents, the NBA has decided to crack down on unruly behavior among its players. It will no longer tolerate any punching, kicking or other overt signs of fighting. More severe penalties will be handed down in order to send a message to fans that such actions are not in the best interests of the great game of basketball.
In fact, the league has decided to reinforce that message with even more restrictions:
No NBA player shall — in the course of a game or outside the playing surface, or for that matter within the borders of the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii and all U.S. territories and possessions, and Canada, and any other country that hosts an NBA-sanctioned event, or televises one, or advertises one, or thinks about one — slap, bump, nudge, poke, grab, brush up against, muss the hair of, jostle, disturb, annoy, tickle, give a wedgie to, insult by word or action, lean against, invade the space of, breathe on, expectorate near, or otherwise ruin the vibe of another NBA player. In fact, even a handshake or a caress that isn’t followed by a big smile can draw a fine.
This is not the official NBA by-law on the topic, however, merely a suggestion for an early draft. And I would venture to guess that the finished version won’t stray too much from the wording and the spirit of the aforementioned passage, given the direction the league seems to be going on this.
The latest indication that the league office has gone to the mattresses on the issue of player-generated aggression is the one-game suspension handed to Kobe Bryant on Monday for slapping San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili with his arm during their game Sunday at Staples Center. The shock is that commissioner David Stern didn’t order a SWAT team to perform a pre-dawn raid on Kobe’s house.
Naturally, Kobe will have to live with the shame of sticking his arm out and coming into contact with Ginobili’s honker after a jump shot. The horror, the horror. Children who weren’t traumatized by the spectacle are now threats to mimic it on the playground, which will cause recipients across the land to exclaim, “Ouch!” and teachers to warn, “Be more careful.”
I saw the replay of the incident in question. To be frank, it could have been intentional. Kobe may have wanted to inform Ginobili in no uncertain terms that if he got too close he risked the danger of eating a forearm focaccia.
But it also could have been an accident. It could have been a reaction by Bryant during the jump-shot motion to fend off an attacker. Either way, the league is in no position to read a player’s mind. Unless it was clearly an act of aggression or retaliation, it should have been ignored.
Stu Jackson, the NBA’s enforcement lackey, explained the suspension by stating that contact was made by Kobe’s arm above Ginobili’s shoulders, and that it was an unnatural basketball motion. Said Jackson: “We did not view this as an inadvertent action.”
First of all, I assume that if some of the problem had to do with a blow that was administered above somebody’s shoulders, then it only stands to reason that a whack in the crotch must be acceptable. This, no doubt, will not only shorten careers but bring the birth rate down.
And as for the “unnatural basketball motion” portion of the act, I can only say that I’ve watched Kobe Bryant since he came into the league as an 18-year-old in 1996 and just about everything he’s done on a court since then has seemed unnatural to me.
The part that is alarming is the league’s determination that it was not an “inadvertent action.” If the NBA purports to be fair about these things, there should have to be context before handing down such a penalty. For instance, if Ginobili and Bryant had been sparring all game, or if Bryant had a history of smashing guys he didn’t like during a jump shot. But to declare Bryant’s intent — and then deny him and the Lakers an appeal process before making him sit out — seems to be a preposterous overreaction by an overly sensitive league obsessed with its image.
And I can see why the NBA might err on the side of shafting its players over every little misstep. There was the Malice at the Palace. There was the Knicks-Nuggets imbroglio. Occasionally, a gun either goes off, or is found in somebody’s possession. That type of stuff looks bad. The league has corporate sponsors. I understand all that.
But the dopey decision to suspend Kobe Bryant over a trifle transfers the league’s image problem from the court to the offices on Fifth Avenue. Now the players aren’t making the NBA look bad, the NBA is making its players look bad. Just as the players have a responsibility to act in a professional manner, so does Stern, Jackson and their associates. In a perfect world, Stern and Jackson would have to sit out a game and pay a fine.
Stern and Jackson also should be cited for cruelty, but not for what they’re doing to Bryant. Because of the suspension, the Lakers’ superstar was forced to miss his team’s only visit this season to Madison Square Garden. For what its worth, I wanted you to know that the vast majority of the most ardent Spurs fans--and even those who literally hate the Lakers, Phil Jackson, Kobe, etc--were totally against the suspension of Kobe Bryant.
I listened to the ticket 760 am here in San Antonio. All afternoon, Spurs fans and the hosts, were astounded that Kobe Bryant was treated that way.
The hosts--who are HUGE Kobe haters--defended Kobe Bryant like you would not believe.
I know this does nothing to lessen the impact of Kobe's suspension.
I just thought you should know that even the people in San Antonio felt that Kobe was treated unfairly.

The tone here in PHX on the Bickley and MJ show was disbelief as well. They were hammering Stern and Stu for being ridiculously heavy handed this year. They also thought it was ridiculous that the appeal wasn't even heard, just denied out of hand. I thought it was very refreshing, considering Kobe and the Lakers aren't too well liked in this valley.
Also I called Stern's office to lodge a formal complaint. The lady asked me if this was in reference to the Lakers protest and I informed her that it most certainly was. Sounds like enough calls were made for it to make at least a ripple. The Player's Association really needs to address this during the next bargaining session. The NBA needs an appeals process like MLB has. Kobe can appeal to get his money back, but the Lakers can't get that game back vs NY and the fans in NY won't see Kobe at all this year. That can't be fixed. It's ridiculous. As Phil said, the coaches/players are dictated to and they submit. They have no recourse.

That's some of the biggest promotion they could get by showcasing those guys on that day. "The other players on the team wanted to make sure he (kobe) earned everything he got, that the coach didn't just give him something just because the fans wanted to see this young phenom play," recalled Del Harris, Bryant's first coach with the Lakers.
That was especially true of Shaquille O'Neal, the game's dominant young center who felt immense pressure to win championships. Each season his dislike of Bryant had grown.
"What suprised me about Shaquille during our early days in Los Angeles was how frustrated he got," said former Lakers GM Jerry West.
"He was not fun to be around. The shortcomings of our team and his teammates made him angry because he knew he was going to be judged on how much we won."
How angry?
Just months before Jackson arrived, O'Neal slapped Bryant during a pickup game at the Laker practice facility.
"It would not be forgotten," former Laker guard Derek Fisher said of the incident.
When Jackson and his coaching staff began work in Los Angeles, they were caught off guard by O'Neal's animosity toward Bryant.
"There was a lot of hatred in his heart," Tex Winter said of O'Neal. "He would speak his mind in our team meetings. He was saying really hateful. Kobe just took it and kept going."
Jackson had long been known for building an outstanding personal relationship with Michael Jordan in Chicago. That had been his strategy from the start: A great relationship with Jordan meant that everyone else on the team would fall in line.
Jackson astutely read that he faced a more severe choice in Los Angeles. The situation dictated that he could not be close to both Laker stars. So he made a logical choice, according to Winter. "Very early in our time in LA, Phil made the decision to go with Shaq. And he made it clear to Kobe and the press and everyone else that it was Shaq's team. He made it clear that he was far more interested in accommodating Shaq than Kobe. And Kobe seemed to accept this."
Winter, however, began to have concerns immediately. He said that he told Jackson that he (Jackson) seemed intent on making Bryant his "whipping boy," the player on which the coach traditionally takes out all of his frustration. Winter told Jackson that making a budding young superstar a whipping boy wasn't a good idea.
"Phil was trying to figure me out a little bit," Bryant recalled. "One of the things I told him is, "There's nothing to figure out. I'm just trying to play the game and learn the game the best I can." Once we got that established we started moving a little bit. But I didn't get into his mind games. I had so many other things to think about with this game. I didn't really have the time even to do that."
His relationship with Jackson only worsened over their five years together in LA. Winter said it was made worse by Jackson's refusal to have any sort of in-depth meeting or relationship with the young guard.
At the same time, Jackson leveled a variety of public attacks at Bryant during those years. At one point, Jackson told reporters that Bryant had sabotaged his own high school games to make himself look like a star.
Despite the situation, Bryant kept his anger under control, Winter said,
Having witnessed the unfolding behind-the-scenes drama over five years, Buss told Jackson that was fine; his services would no longer be needed.
Stunned, Jackson abruptly changed his approach with Bryant. Suddenly, the coach began trying to have a relationship with Bryant, Winter said. And Bryant responded in kind.
"But it was too late," Winter said.
It was simply a huge mistake to not keep Bryant in the loop, said Winter. "I think Phil realises that now."

I mean keep in mind that it was the last shoot of the game, that Kobe's goal was to score and to win, not to defend. And the 3 refs were watching him cause it was pretty clear he was the go-to-guy. Now, how i see it, Manu almost blocked Kobe (great D), and Kobe faked a contact by moving like that the right hand, and unintentionally hitting Manu (that's how i see it). Unintentionally. But yeah, it was an unnatural movement. But there's a big problem the NBA didn't consider. If it was intentional, it was a foul. So the Spurs had to go to the line for 2 FT's (with 1-2 secs left) to win the game. It's not only about the unnatural movement. It's about the fact it was a foul or not, firts. If it was, 3 refs made a mistake. And they reviewed in on the moviola and still made a mistake. How is it possible? So no matter how you see it it's a big big mistake done by the NBA. Cause if you feel like the NBA is right, 3 refs were wrong, and they were wrong after reviewing it on the moviola too. If you feel the NBA is wrong, then it's some bullshit, cause the Lakers lost in NYC without Kobe (and NYC lost Kobe). The thing that i can't accept is that the NBA thinks they are better judges that 3 fucking refs, who watched the same replays. That's unacceptable to me. The judges should be the refs and the refs only, not somebody in the NBA Offices. Fuck that. Most patetic suspension EVER. That's how i see it. The thing that i can't accept is that the NBA thinks they are better judges that 3 fucking refs, who watched the same replays. That's unacceptable to me. No it's not. It's a foul if there's a contact. And there's no contact there. Simple as that. Anyway it was so hard to be seen that it looked like a contact in the first place. But Ginobli cleanly blocked Kobe. There is no way in hell the refs were going to call a foul, so Kobe tried to make it look like Ginobli ran into him. That seems to be the only logical explanation since Kobe's motion was completely and utterly unnatural. The only other way Kobe's arm would flail like that is if he got fouled and that was not the case at all. There was a good distance between Ginobli and Kobe.

David Stern released a press release saying he was going to crack down a players "flopping", or in other words, faking a foul. Both you and I know Kobe wasn't trying to hurt anyone, but he was trying to make it look like he got fouled. There are situations where a player is slightly touched and he make it looks like he's dying on the floor. There are situations where players flops on the floor with no contact at all (Wade..). There are situations where players are hitted 1 or 2 times during a lay-up and they don't call it a foul. There are situations where players who shoot makes an unnatural movement to search for a contact or to fake a contact. It's been like this since the first day in the NBA, lol. It's not like this is a new thing. Imho it should be ruled by the refs. They're the ones to blame. The NBA - Stern - should talk to the refs giving them the message to not help players who usually do those dirty things (ex. Wade). Instead they're helping Wade faking fouls and they're punishing Kobe, a player who normally gets fouled and who doesn't get the same respect by the refs Wade do. That's some real bullshit, man. Stern can say what the fuck he wants but:
a) that movement was done by instinct, and you cant suspend someone because of that
b) they don't apply the same "rule" against LeBron, Wade, etc..
c) the refs, to me, are the only one who should judge those situations. ON THE FLOOR.

C. Sometimes the refs aren't in position to make the correct call. Look at the NFL and the replay review. It's called "human error". It happens all the time.

2) IT WASN'T INTENTIONAL.

Jacob has a good point - since The Malice, the league is in hyper conservative mode and is purposely going overboard on suspensions. None of the articles you posted say that the league is harsh on Kobe and Kobe alone. They say they are harsh on superstars. And that is a fact.
Do you honestly think that the Timberwolves Nation and the Nuggets Nation were in full support of KG's & Melo's suspensions? Fuck no they weren't. They were flipping the fuck out as well. I guarantee you TONS of them believe that David Stern / Stu Jackson hold a huge grudge against those guys.
And of course the league is promoting it's young superstars. These are the guys that are gonna be the face of the league for the next 10-20 years. They're not gonna go out there and spend time / money championing Shaq and all the other geezers. That'd be a horrible business move. It's like you're always saying how the Lakers want dynasties and not sacrifice the future for immediate success. That's what the NBA does - they're putting a HELL of a lot more time promoting the young guys because they're gonna bring them more financial success for years to come than a guy like Shaq who's looking at a year or two left.

That's probably the biggest hyped regular season game of the year for the last few years. The NBA knows that there's a huge audience for that day and they want their biggest names in action. My dad who NEVER watches the NBA watches with me on Christmas and the only guys he knows are Shaq and Kobe. You think that is on accident? That's some of the biggest promotion they could get by showcasing those guys on that day. If there was ANY conspiracy to keep Kobe down they wouldn't put his face on tv on a day that's likely gonna draw some of the bigges ratings of the year.
