Title: Got a new internship with DJ Hideo (The Beat, CaliUntouchable, XM satellite)
Post by: We Fly High on June 25, 2005, 05:24:41 AM
i just got a new internship with DJ Hideo, he is mixshow director & production assistant for 100.3 The Beat in LA. you also probably know him from the Cali Untouchables collective with Strong, Warrior and all them. and he has two XM satellite shows, West Coast Take Over, and one that focuses on neo-soul/hip hop. so yeah im looking forward to the internship. its on the 19th floor on Wilshire blvd. so the view of Los Angeles is so dope from there. yeah just thought id share my slow but sure progress into the industry. i've already been warned that its going to a 24 hour 7 days a week grind doing this, so gotta prepare for it.

That sounds good man...I got a few questions though Justin ;) :

How did you hook up with him?
What exactly will you have to do over there?
Since you mentioned "that you're getting in the industry", what exactly would you like to become in this industry? A&R? Manager?

Good luck!

thanks guys...

hrm.. i hooked up with him.. just at first just through constant e-mails at first.. I mean i see Warrior and Strong a lot , like at almost every event i go to, so i already knew wassup with the Cali untouchables and stuff. but i felt that interning for hideo would probably offer me more, as he had his hands up in 100.3 The Beat and XM as well as the CU business. so yeah i just hooked up with him at the Beat offices.. hella crazy cos an old cat from the station was visitng that night, and he was just tellin me about the night that B.I.G. died at the base of the office buildings, like right on the street intersection.

hrm. the things im going to be doing. a lot of it is just going to being his right hand man. like small tasks like organizing inputting contacts, muisc and stuff. and up to larger responsibilities like getting gigs for him, getting exlcusives (radio drops, mixtape joints), helping with mixtape production, like a lot of stuff i guess. helping with the XM satellite show, and all of that. a lot of liason between him and the labels and stuff. kinda acting like a Public Relations i guess.

i ultimately hope to become a label owner or some sort of important A+R or some shit. i have no idea, just lookin into the future and aimin high. i dunno the more and more i get into this business though, the more i become discouraged. like the artists you meet arent the same people that you think.. and in the end, it just seems like what you should be enjoying has turned into work.

Pissin on the Throne, where you going to be at in LA for work? what kind job are you looking for?
correct me if im wrong, but arent you originally from brazil?

iīm originally from the Dominican Republic but iīve been living in Sweden for the last 7 years. BMG in Sweden hooked me up with a job at their american offices in LA. donīt know exactly what iīm gonna be doin there though. i donīt really care coz itīll be a good learning experience and iīll sit in on whatever they let me sit in on and listen to. but i only got a green card for 4 months and i had hoped to get a green card for 1 year but iīll prolly go back in March if i enjoy it. i know iīm gonna be doin something that invovles promotion but i donīt even know which artists thatīs on the label. i know that Sony owns it so maybe iīll have to promote some of their artists from LA.

Internships are the best way. You gotta sacrifise a little in the beggining and you'll be checked to see how hungry you are for the industry, but once you're determined... the right person can discover you. It only takes time and patience.

well, this is going to be an unpaid student internship, so im going to have to work a little without being paid. but after three months or so, I should get a pretty damn good position if they like what I am doing in those 3 months.
some companies offer paid internships, but i think most offer unpaid, and most student internships are unpaid anyways. internships are basically a way for the company to see if they want to hire you, if you yourself like the job, and also just to get good experience in general. and being a student, makes it a lot easier to get an internship at a company. if you are already graduated, it becomes harder to get an internship and you basically just have to go through a normal application process which is a lot harder.

well most internships pay, I had a paid internship and most I looked into were paying internships.  I personally would never work for free.  the music biz is a lot different than most industries, and I guess you do what u gotta do to get in it and advance yourself.  good luck.

well, yeah there are a lot of internships that do pay, but in the areas of media, like television, radio and etc, the amount of paid internships is very limited. yeah i really dont want to be working for free, but i just think of it as a sacrifice that i must make in order to get experience that i dont already have. in media and entertainment too, with so many people competing for jobs, you gotta show that you are down to put in work. its basically just like a training session, i rather go into a real job fully trained and prepared with all the foundation and knowledge down, instead of just going into a job expecting to learn as it goes.

anyways where did you intern at ac?

Good work Justin, that's sounds real cool and I hope everything works out well for you. Hopefully, if you enjoy what you're doing it shouldn't seem TOO much like work! It certainly sound like you know what you're doing anyway.

I understand what you're saying completely when you mentioned that you had to e-mail Hideo frequently. I've made a lot of (what I consider to be) 'breakthroughs' that way. I want to get into journalism now that I've completed school, and I've read a lot of interviews with various hip-hop/music scribes for the likes of ''XXL'', ''Vibe'', etc. Anyway, nearly all of them have mentioned that when you find a contact, you've got to be PERSISTENT with them in order to make any progress. That's how I ended up writing for ''AllHipHop'' and getting replies/feedback from some of these magazine editors...just by constantly hitting them with messages, examples of my work, etc.

I think its great that you're going for an internship - as somebody else has already mentioned, just look how Puffy and Jimmy Iovine started out. I would love to get an internship with one of these rap magazines. I'm in contact with a couple, so who knows? The aim is one day to run my own West Coast based rap and hip-hop magazine. I'm going to start it out as a newsletter and distribute that...after all, that's how ''The Source'' began, if I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully, you are getting compensated for your efforts soon. I've taken a year out so I can focus on earning some money before I head over to America next year when I aim to meet some of the people I've been fortunate enough to communicate with - just need to get my cash up first!

All the best for the future man. As someone who has a similar interest in making it in the music biz in some form, I'm really interested in your progress. Keep us updated.

Cop Killa, what is it you want to do? Beats? Or is it more similar to Justin in A&R, label management, etc?

I'm far from an expert, but I have learned that you've just got to keep hitting these people up, showing that you're enthusiastic and have something to offer. Sooner or later, someone will get to you. I've had the briefest of responses in the past, but the fact that I've got that response inspires me to keep pushing away at it. I know that as my experience continues to build (just got a new ''AHH'' review up the other day) someone will eventually take action.

Something to do with engineering behind the boards then hopefully progress to producing, not making beats full production stuff and mixing.

dpg2k - wait where are you living at right now? thats dope to hear about your plans. are you out of college already? yeah its pretty much all about persistence and the right contacts. if you only hit up someone once or twice, they aint going to remember you. you gotta constantly be hittin them up so that they remember you and they know that you're really anxious to work. and if you got the right contacts, it can take you just about anywhere.
if you start working at a publication we're going to have to hook up on some shit, get some green together.

cop killa - i'm not sure how the grind for the engineering goes..  cos rapping and like making beats are kinda the same hustle.. but engineering is kinda different, so i am not too sure to go about that..

well yah, pay comes in different forms.  knowledge can be worth more than money.  afterall the game is to be sold and not to be told, right?  I take that back about never working for free.  if I had pretty good confidence that I would gain the knowledge/skills/contacts from the job that could do me better than a paycheck, then I would work for free.  You just gotta be careful, cuz there is a lot of schemes and scandals out there today.  people getting others to work for free, in promise of big things to come in the future.  but hey, in order to get the big rewards, you gotta take the big risks.  I've made tons of mistakes in my life, and one thing I have learned for sure, no matter how bad of a mistake I made, I at least got a great learning experience out of it, and I gotta say its very hard to put a monetary price on a lot of experiences.  hopefully soon you can get that real westcoast shit back on the air!
