Title: Are the best days of hip-hop behind us?
Post by: Minkaveli on September 27, 2008, 09:09:57 AM
I was driving and this question came to me as I was listening to some Tribe Called Quest.  Are the best days of hip-hop behind us?  Are there artists of the future currently that can carry the torch or will the industry now be based around flavors of the month?

I say there are some artists that can do that but I am concerned about the direction of the music.

We will never have Hip Hop as great as it was from '88-'96. Never again. I put anything on that.

Man, a lot has changed in the pest 10-12 years, but although I don;t really check all of it, quality stuff stays comming out

In the past 2-3 months there have been solid releases from Termanology, Reks, Nas, Murs, People Under The Stairs, Heltah Skeltah, DJ Revolution, DJ K.O., Jake One, Large Professor...and throught the year one can find more examples. One just has to dig to find quality stuff, but I can agree with one thing:all of the above mentioned make great music, but not much shit has touched me when listening to it like 90's or 80's hip-hop.but that's just me

Solid (releases) is the is the word. None of those albums are classics, back in the day, you couldn't count the classics coming every year. Been too long since the last real hiphop classic

I wouldn't be surprised if some people here think that hip hop is at its peak right now (i.e. Big Sadot, Lunatic, C. Material, Al Bundy), but me... I think there's no telling. Music (hip hop) evolves 24/7. Mainstream rap has sunk very low, but if you look further than that there's still a lot of good stuff... In the (near) future there could be artists that step up the plate and blow us away. Who knows! :)

Well, the best days of the dvd are also behind us, but that doesn't mean you can't go out and buy yourself a dvd because it has become totally worthless... Same with hiphop. It's still here, just not as much at a peak as it was in the early 90s.

Hip-Hop is a culture, not just music. And it's more Hip-Hop now than in 1993, when then it was gangsta and now it's back to party music, the way it should be. Is Hip-Hop Dead, no, Hip-Hop is coming back.

Dr dre was about to make his comeback, Eminem was busting out the scene and Snoop was coming out with his second record on NO LIMIT called Top Dogg wich had the mega hit Bitch Please, was way better then The game is....

You also had well ok No limit wasent great buyt had a few cool hits to bump so did Cash money.

how old is this cat?? dogg, I've been listening to Hip-Hop since the days of South Central Cartel and Eazy E and NWA, and back then people was saying Hip-Hop was dying because it was getting to gangsta and wasn't as Afrocentric, and during the Goldyn Era people said it was too commercial. This argument has been going on since Melle Mel said no one in the late 80's was better than him. Listen to KRS-One, dude ain't going around saying Hip-Hop is dead, his doing shit with Soulja Boy. And his the teacher of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is something you live, it's the culture, rap is something you do, it's the music.

thats not what im sayin.

you said, "its more hiphop now than in 93, then it was gangsta and now its back to party music, the way it should be".

so you're sayin just because gangsta rap was in at the time and now dance records are in, its more hiphop now? that shit doesnt make any sense.

how was it any less hiphop back then when THE ACTUAL MUSIC was 10 times better? just cuz it happened to be gangsta rap?

Hip-Hop is a party culture. Plan and simple.

hip hop is not party music go lsiten to techno if you wanna party and dance around like a fag hip hop is what it is rap, hip hop covers a few things you dont get to decide whats classed as what i listen to mc eiht to pete rock.. and its all hip hop just a different point of view and a differnt style.. one of them vast styles just happens to be party its not that simple and deff not that plain. 4 tay rappin about prison and other dudes in jail locked up in jail isent gangsta and it deff aint party

Let's pray that no. If you're smart, you still can find your cup of tea:

Stones Throw
- some dope experimental music. You'll never get enough of it. Madlib, MF Doom, Dilla (R.I.P.), Oh No, Dudley Perkins and lots of another great artists.

Rhymesayers
- Atmosphere, Felt, Brother Ali, Jake One, ... This is the hardest underground shit around here. You'll never get bored of their rhymes and style.

DPG is still poppin', you got Nas, Cube, (probaly) Dr.Dre, Q-Tip still in the game. You got The Coup, Ghostface is still makin' dope albums. Common, I can still name a lot of dope music around these years. There're new talents too, Termanology, Black Milk, Bishop Lamont, Blu, Blue Scholars, Kidz In The Hall, The Game & many more. A lot of groups have reunion - The Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, etc. We'll probably never see an album like Illmatic, Dogg Food, but if you find you always have to find something good for ya ears.

In the fact there are more garbage artists as well, so you have to find correct.

The honesty of slipping in just that one line.
