as a 30 years old west coast hip-hop music fan, i remember late 90s and early 2000s.
there were artists like dr. dre, snoop dogg, ice-cube, kurupt, daz, nate dogg, warren-g, dj quik, ice-t, xzibit, ext...
there were bands like dpg, cypress hill, 213, dilated people, eastsidaz, westside connection, ext...
there were producers like dr. dre, bud'da, fredwreck, meech wells, battlecat, jelly roll, sir jinx, ext...
they were keep making hits and releasing really classic albums. it was really exciting to wait for their new album next year.
what the fuck happened at late 2010s??? i mean these mutherfuckers are still alive and not old yet.
no new hit, no classic albums, not even an album coming out from these artists and bands.
what we have now? kendrick lamar? does it sound "west coast" to you? maybe jay rock's follow me home sounds like a real west coast shit.
can you name another west coast album that came out lately? which is worlwide sucesful? which makes west coast fans excited?
let's accept its done. we have to listen old shit or new dudes on the other sides.
r.i.p. west coast hip-hop music.

I agree with most of your post and I am from the same era and know where your comin from... but didn't you think Xzibit's Napalm was a solid comeback record from him? That didn't come out that long ago.

problem is younger audience and labels aren't going to invest in a old rapper past his prime who just going to drop an album and then vanish again
he had his moment in the past time to move on every rapper has a shelf life people today don't want to invest time listening to a much older rapper these people want some one young

what a dumb ass fucking thread. its called EVOLUTION, people. you didnt seriously think that the g-funk sound was still gonna be a main staple 20 years later?? music always changes. like are people saying rock is dead because it doesnt sound like 50s rock and roll music? is heavy metal dead because its not about the hair and doesnt sound like its stuck in the 80s? are NY folks talking like they miss the old Sugar Hill Gang sound?? quit being a bunch of narrow, simple minded fucktards.
edit: west coast hip-hop is far from dead. just because they arent talking about bloods/crips, 64s and khaki suits does not make that shit dead. dont talk about my city (LA) like you really from here.

over the last 10-15 years...there would be no west without them champ ;)

west coast music most certainly ain't dead...
T.D.E., YG, DJ Mustard, Problem, FaShawn, G-Eazy, Terrace Martin, TeeFli, Ty $, Jhene Aiko, Vince Staples, Dom Kennedy, Sage the Gemini, IamSu, Casey Veggies, Tyler, the Creator, Skeme are all popping right now. If anything, there haven't been as many relevant west coast rappers / r&b singers in easily a decade.
G-Funk ain't dead either, it has evolved, you just gotta stay alert and peep anything Terrace Martin is involved with, for example.
either way there has been plenty of quality releases coming from west coast artists these past four years :
Kendrick Lamar - Section .80 / GKMC and all the tde releases (pretty much)
Xzibit - Napalm
Dom Kennedy - From Westside with Love II / the yellow album / get home safely
Casey Veggies - Sleeping in Class / Life Changes /Customized Greatly
FaShawn - Champagne & Styrofoam Cups
Skeme - Ingleworld
Ty $ - Beach House
Jhene Aiko - Sailing Souls / Soul'd Out
YG - My Krazy Life
DJ Quik - The Midnight Life / Book of David
DJ Mustard - 10 Summers
Problem - The Separation
King Tee - Still Triflin'
Problem & IamSu - Million Dollar Afro
etc.

YG is killing it... dude keeps it west coast like hell.

lol! some fools think the westcoast sound is just about the classic 90s g-funk...in the 2000's there was a lot of dope westcoast albums with a definitiv westcoast-sound! it has a groovy sound and was like a newer form of g-funk...i think the thread-starter was talking about that sound and not just g-funk...2001 for example wasn't really g-funk, but it has a westcoast-sound through and through.
fuck i would even go so far and say that the westcoast rap from the early to mid 2000's was just as dope as the classic 90's stuff. the new testament, eastsidas both albums, all mac dre's albums from that time, grit & grind, return of the regulator, 213, restless, and many many more...
so as much as i love kendrick, ab-soul and their stuff, i wouldn't mind another rapper, crew or producer with a 2010+ version of that funky westcoast shit...and that yg album don't really count imo...mustard beats is too cheap. he's like a poor man's manny fresh that try to recreate old too short sounds from time to time imo..that's just me i guess. i know alot of fools got love for mustard
-

musturd is way worse then fresh its basically the same beat over and over the name dj musturd nobody will care by next year

false. ice-t, NWA, too short etc. werent doing g-funk records. if it wasnt for them, there would be no west. so your argument is invalid.

how does it not count exactly ? YG's album is by essence "that funky westcoast shit" and that "newer form of g-funk" you just described. how is it cheap exactly ? they used live instruments and session musicians like Terrace Martin to replay the tracks. and the result is funky, gangsta and g-funkish as it can get. I swear people sleep on Mustard's versatility. He's pegged as a one trick pony when he has clearly shown he could produce club tracks, g-funk tracks, more soulful and r&b tracks.

if you can't appreciate the groovy sound, the g-funk elements and regional sound in these songs, then I can't do anything for you.

lol chill....i never said that there would be no "regional" aspects in his sound, i just don't feel it and it sounds cheap to me..the drums sound over-quantized and have no live feeling on it (i suspect the drums to be just programmed on flstudio) and sounds "cold". drums are an important part of a beat. i prefer a more "organic" sound.
don't get me wrong i liked some of the tracks from the album. but "me & my bitch" for example (best track on the album imo) but that was the only track that wasn't produced my mustard. do it to ya is a perfect example. it sounds like not nearly as groovy as let's play house....i give yg props for his obviously suga free influence on it (same on "the flockers"), but overall it's nothing that i feel..what should i say? if i don't feel it i don't feel it. we're gonna end up debating on opinions
-
ya cant forget tde in house beat makers ;)
-
i agree wit funk lord to an extent, a lot of mustard's beats do sound generic/cheap......not to say he doesnt have some slaps, but he's not one of the better overall producers reppin the west, just the most popular.

i'm very tranquil and relaxed, thanks for you concern 8)
not debating your opinion, just discussing your argument which sounds weak to me. you said there were no live feelings to the album, that's how you feel it, but check the credits http://www.discogs.com/YG-My-Krazy-Life/release/6368843 and the Jeezy interview about the interview (as he's the exec producer), Mustard laid the beats down and had everything replayed by session musicians with live instruments.
-

didn't say he was the best either, i think his sound oversaturated the radio and a lot of his shit is indeed generic and hit or miss, but don't be fooled by his signature sound, he has a lot of slaps, dope shit and YG's album and 10 Summers rank among his better work. and he's also more than what he's credited for. He can produce legit r&b songs.

i know what u mean.....i think it's usually the drums that make it sound weak. because like u mentioned, a lot of the melodies are actually played live.

more live feelings than a lot of other producers nowadays got no doubt, but that ain't really sayin' much. i just don't get the hype gets from a lot of "older" hiphop fans. i still giving him props for letting things replayed by session musicians, as you said. on the other hand i would give him even more props if he would play the keys or something by himself.. but let's see, maybe he will grow musically and will suprise me one day ;)
peace

Small minded motherfuckers can't keep with the times. Might as well pack it up and stop trying to live homie.

I think what dude is saying is "The West Coast" is dead to the mainstream. It's not popping like it was in the 90's, early 2000s. Sure you still have West Coast artists releasing stuff, but it's not selling millions. It's still around for fans that follow the trend, but it's not something bumping on the radio anymore or TV, etc.
Like the The Beatles, The Monkeys. Aerosmith, Rolling Stones. No one is on that level, but the later still sell records to their fans. But that era is dead.
Someone or something will blow up on the west and bring it back. Maybe the N.W.A movie will help revive it to the mainstream and a good time for people to drop some solid albums.
-
listen to Tee Fllii's album Starr if you want that smooth west coast shit. he aint a rapper, singer and has E-40, Skeme, Nipsey, Snoop, DJ Quik, Dom Kennedy etc as features. great album to smoke and chill to.
-

wait till the next kendrick album cause that's what ur going to be hearing everywhere when it drops
the N.W.A movie not going to do nothing it will come PEOPLE will enjoy it and it will go its not like anyone here {USA} is going to listen to any that old stuff anyway

i read your answers with my eyes open wide and i see some guys can't accept the truth.
let's see what most of you said "its an evolution, music changed, g-funk is gone, old cats are dead not west coast hiphop, bla bla bla".
some of you named some underground rappers and its really a shame.
i accept that g-funk is no longer popular, its an evolution, but that evolution happened after dre's 2001 and brought a new era, now that new era is dead also and nobody on the west side could put something new instead of it.
i love underground hiphop but im not talking about this.
lets say old cats are gone, dre, snoop, dpg, xzibit, cypress and others...
please tell me one new cat on the westside who is popular as much as old cats were in their age.
if you tell me west coast underground hiphop are doing good albums worth to listen, ok! i accept that.
i was listening underground rappers even when west coast music was so popular with legendary artists that i mentioned before.
west coast hiphop is no longer interesting, if it changed, what we have now? just nothing. accept the fact guys.
-
Mustard and "newer form of g-funk"? No, thanks. For me it`s newschool sound with a bit of old west coast sound. Newer version of g-funk is for example Polyester the Saint or Cardo (I know, he isn` from west coast). So smooth and dope.

you keep mistaking facts for opinions. you seem genuinely sad that west coast music isn't as commercial or successful worldwide as it once was. well maybe it's not as popular in the world (which I don't think is really true), but west coast artists haven't been as successful in years. and that is a fact. now whether you like these artists or not is a matter of opinion, but the facts is that a good number of them are buzzing to this day, and they're not underground : YG, Kendrick Lamar, SchoolBoy Q, Nipsey Hussle, G-Eazy, IamSu, Problem, FaShawn, Macklemore ?
so, maybe westcoast rap's heyday has passed, maybe westcoast music was in decline for several years. but if you follow what's going on, you will notice it's been on rise for a few years now, if you don't like these new artists that's your opinion and that's fine, but that's not a FACT at all. people please stop using this word without thinking. westcoast music is not dead at all. it's on and popping.
you lament the lack of longevity of the OG's, but a rapper's prime is short lived, rap music is based on novelty, innovation and spontaneity. most of the time an artist or a label comes up, breaks through because their sound is fresh and they are somewhat "culturally" relevant, but after that rappers have a hard time maintaining their standards of quality and quickly run out of things to say. you have a lot of artists with great longevity (scarface, nas, e40, quik), but they're the exception more than the norm. and you expect artists to stay relevant for 20 plus years ? You're asking for a lot. There'll always be interesting music coming from the OG's but their time have passed and they probably don't have the drive or the creativity to come up with really interesting music, unless they reinvent themselves and transition to other things. criticize Snoop all you want, but him doing a reggae album and a funk album is more interesting than hearing him spit nonsense on gangbang rookie, in my opinion.
Mustard and "newer form of g-funk"? No, thanks. For me it`s newschool sound with a bit of old west coast sound. Newer version of g-funk is for example Polyester the Saint or Cardo (I know, he isn` from west coast). So smooth and dope.
it depends on the song, there are mustard songs like "smoking n drinking" which have very obvious g-funk twist. you might not like it, but it's there.
I love Polyester as a producer but his raps are redundant, though. Cardo is a beast, too.

i read your answers with my eyes open wide and i see some guys can't accept the truth.
let's see what most of you said "its an evolution, music changed, g-funk is gone, old cats are dead not west coast hiphop, bla bla bla".
some of you named some underground rappers and its really a shame.
i accept that g-funk is no longer popular, its an evolution, but that evolution happened after dre's 2001 and brought a new era, now that new era is dead also and nobody on the west side could put something new instead of it.
i love underground hiphop but im not talking about this.
lets say old cats are gone, dre, snoop, dpg, xzibit, cypress and others...
please tell me one new cat on the westside who is popular as much as old cats were in their age.
if you tell me west coast underground hiphop are doing good albums worth to listen, ok! i accept that.

yes its my opinion and maybe im too old fashioned romantic about golden age of west coast hiphop.
but you also agree on westcoast music was in decline for several years.
that is what i am talking about.
kendrick's first album made a big impact on music industry, but we can't name his album "west coast hiphop" because he is just from compton.
but you can definately call jay rock's "follow me home" album "west coast hiphop".
anyway, as a west coast hiphop fan i'm not interested in SchoolBoy Q, Nipsey Hussle, G-Eazy, IamSu, FaShawn, and other dudes.
because i listened to some records of them, and they are really ordinary.they are just underground rappers.
they have no potential to make a big impact. but i appreciate their effort.

yes it was in decline, in the past tense, it's not anymore. it's been on the rise since 11-12.
why can't we call "GKMC" a west coast record if Kendrick comes from Compton ? You're mistaking a subgenre of rap with regions. If you listen to Kendrick's music, you'll definitely know he's from the west coast, not from the beats, but from his content.
you're mistaking west coast music with gangsta rap and g-funk. if you want to hear some newer gangsta rap or g-funk listen to Polyester the Don. if you want to hear newer west coast music with typical g-funk/gangsta rap elements, listen to Dom Kennedy, Terrace Martin, Skeme, Jay305, etc.
if you want to listen to non-westcoast music with g-funk / gangsta rap influences check out Stalley, Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs, etc.
it seems to me you have a hard time accepting that music is in constant evolution and that nothing can be or sound the same for ever.
You equate ordinary music with underground music. Is underground music ordinary by essence ? Not necessarily.
How are they undergrounds, though ?
SchoolBoy Q had one of the highest selling albums last year, Nipsey Hussle is an established artist in the industry, Sage the Gemini has had a platinum selling single, G-Eazy has videos with 18 million views on youtube (wow, how underground), FaShawn is signed to Nas's record label, they all are making an impact right now. Maybe not in Antalya or Kathmandu, but culturally and musically west coast music is on the rise, and just because it doesn't sound like west coast music sounded 20 years ago, doesn't mean west coast music is dead, it's just that you don't like it anymore.
-
i think what made west coast different than other rap genres wasn't its content or region. it was music to me.
yes, kendrick is a west coast rapper but i can't call his record west coast. we cant also call it east coast or another. he has is own style.
i accept music can change, i don't think dre will do another 2001. detox will be definately dope and different.
we didn't expect xzibit to make another "at the speed of life" but he did "restless".
we didn't expect snoop dogg to do another doggystyle but he did "the last meal".
so music can change, i agree, but you have to put something newi something really good.
jedi mind tricks is also an underground hiphop band. i dont mean they are wack or they didnt sell when i say "underground".
i agree i dont like it anymore.
west coast should create a new era. a new genre. it doesnt has to be gangsta rap or g-funk.
but they have to put something out that we can call "this is west coast!"
-
well, u said west coast hip-hop is dead.....which is flat out wrong. if u look in the underground scene, we got lotsa talented artists still puttin out dope west coast shit. what u shoulda said was "mainstream west coast hip-hop is dead", which in that case, i would've agreed
-
maybe im too old fashioned romantic about golden age of west coast hiphop.

-
That Coco song rapper is from LBC and its all over the radio
-
G-Funk may be dead but the West is not...
Even that isn't dead, there's alotta G Funk in Trap Music, lyrically and instrumentally.
"Never Catch Me" is pretty G Funk to me too, same with some of Tee-Flii's album. "10 Summers" had a G Funk vibe to it too.
Lol at this blatant Troll Thread

all rappers you mentioned are doing ordinary albums. they are not talented rappers when you compare with legends. could any of them did something like "restless" "space boogie" "i want it all"? could they did a classic like those? who the fuck on earth knows them except of west coast fans? but today, you can hear "regulate" is still playin on radio on everywhere in the world.
is that what you call "new west"? schoolboy g? kid ink? teefliii? wow. im impressed.

These new west artist make some good as music. its not the traditional g funk music but even new york music is not the traditional 90s or 80s new york music. Hip hop evovled & lets accept that. 90s westcoast music was a classic era & no doubt the best era but these new west artist is making good music.

If you can accept west coast is dead you should also accept Detox will never drop becuz Dre lost his touch and the Dre era is over. Matter of fact, Dre losing his touch is one of the main reasons west coast is dieing becuz Dre always kept it alive by coming with a sick new sound every 3 years between 1986 and 2009. Dre losing his touch is the worst thing that happened to west coast hip hop(hip hop in general basically)

YG's "My Krazy Life" is a modern West Coast classic, fo sho! That album is straight heat from beginning to end! Gotta show some love to DJ Mustard too. The Game is still relevant. Also "Oxymoron" by Schoolboy Q is straight killing it! E-40 seems to be productive too, dropping heat after heat... the West Coast hip-hop scene is alive!
