CalTech grad student named Virgil Griffith has conducted an interesting (albeit somewhat unscientific) study relating music preferences with SAT scores. While SAT scores are criticized for not accurately determining intelligence, the results show that the “smartest” students’ favorite musician is Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371, and at the other end of the spectrum is Lil’ Wayne, with an average score of 889.
Other bands at the top of the scale are Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens. Check out the full image of the results after the jump:
Surprisingly, no style of music stands out above the rest, but rather most bands fit within the 1000 to 1150 score range. Another question is whether music can be legitimately associated with smarts.
Does intelligence choose the band? Or does music define how smart we become? Where do your favorite bands appear? Do you think that music can make you dumb?

whoever made that was dumb

I can definitely see how some dumb little girl listening to Beyonce gets more stupid with her rational...

sufjan stevens above dylan denotes the whole list for me, plus i dont think music can necessarily make you dumb, i know some smart ass people that listen to horrible shit, or idiots with great & "intelligent" music taste

Haha very true.
But before you can actually apply this info to anything, think about how they test how smart people are. SAT scores are not that informative, they test English and Math, some people study more than others, and a lot of other things. This was just some little college study that the media thought was creative and ran with it. I think the type of music you listen to can affect the vocabulary that you use and may or may not expand your mind, but the overall correlation is very minimal.

this list is null and void for the simple fact that it cotains Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and Outkast but no Ying Yang Twins. This list is the internet definition of

thats a cool survey she did.
i agree though, you have to be pretty dumb to enjoy lil waynes shit music, on the other hand more factors should have been included, like demographics.
and i doubt music can make someone more dumb, just dumb people will enjoy dumb music cause they understand it :)

Exactly. Smart people get bored by Lil Wayne. Dumb people are overchallenged by Beethoven.
It's not like the survey draws any conclusion. It just shows mathematical likeliness of liking a certain band or style of music with regards to ACT scores. It's kinda cool. The only thing dumb about it is calling it "Music That Makes You Dumb" cause it's got little to do with that.

This thing is fuckin stupid lol. No doubt a student catering to a professor who listens to Beethoven.
-
It is just a graphic representation of a study. No need for you all to get your panties in a twist.
-
It wasn't even a good study. So many problems with it. I would like to see a study done on a person's attention span to what kind of music they like. The more patience you have when digesting an album, in any genre, the more likely you will listen to better stuff.
