Ive been listening to hip hop for maybe 6 years, but only the last 3 or so have i really gotten into it. Started learnin about classic shit. Ive been hearin about illmatic for ever, and i finally got around to buyin it. I had no idea what to expect really, but i gotta say i was suprised. I thought it was gonna be like 2pacalypse now, not that that was bad, but no where near tupacs best. Illmatic was real sweet though, it reminds me of reasonable doubt cause its just all about the lyrics. Definetly gonna take over my cd player for awhile.
-
Listen to it for 48 hours straight and pay attention. Then take a break...shower, eat, take a shit and do it again for another 48 hours. ;D
-
or just listen to it straight for over 10 years. and you'll realize how classic it is. thats what ive been doing. one of the few hip hop albums i can play straight through non stop on repeat.
-
^^^yeah and one of the only albums you can keep in regular rotation for years and never get sick of it
I musta bought Illmatic about 6 times already becuz of it gettin scratched up in those days of cruisin fucked up
-
haha yup. i have to rebuy mine just so i have a mint copy for my collection. mines is so scratched up from so much use.
-
"Illmatic" is not an album you're gonna get off top. Nas isnt an artist you're gonna get off top. It took me years of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc chances to finally get into Nas/Illmatic. It was worth it though
-
^ i was like that with Ready To Die... but i got illmatic pretty much from the gate..
I guess it depends on where your head is at with hiphop..
-
Classic
-
took me some time, now its my fav rap album ever..
-
i always thought illmatic was easy listening... first time i heard it i thought i heard it before...
-
thank god you finally bought this
-
a hip hop collection without illmatic isnt a collection 8)
-
Illmatic blows me away every time I bump it. The production and the lyrics are top notch. Plus, it's short length makes for an easy listen straight all the way. In my opinion, the shorter the albums the better. I'd rather have a 40 minute masterpiece than an 80 minute overload.

i actualy have never been into nas and dont own a nas album, he jus doesnt interest me but these reviews make me want to buy it
-
I am a Nas fan, but I admit that Illmatic is the only album I didn't like. Of course I only listened to it once. Sounds like it is an acquired taste.
-
i've had it since like 95'
i didn't like it at first ,but over time it grows on you, my only complaint about it is the production is very dated

umm...im not tryin to start shit...i just wanted you to know...that what you just said was maybe the stupidest fucking thing i've read in the last year....of course its outdated...the album is 12 years old!
-
Shit, i bump the entire album at least once a month. I'm gonna buy the 10 year anniversary edition because it is remastered and sounds much better. The lyrics and production on this album are about as close to perfect as you can get.
-
^^^ yeah i got the 10th anniversary...it sounds a little better. I sadly never ever listen to the 2nd disc...i think i listened to it like once...i'm just not a big remix person...its cool when you hear remixes of new songs...but i don't wanna hear remixes of classics

But the 2nd disc also has some unreleased tracks right? I feel you on the remix thing. These remixes aren't that bad - you shouldn't try to compare them to the original beat, or else you'll never like them.
-
yeah the 2nd disc has star wars and on the real...which are both cool songs...im glad they weren't on the first disc but definitely worth having. you should definitely pick up the anniversary edition

-
I finnaly bought this and 36 Chambers in Febuary and I fell in love with Nas, Wu-Tang, and basiaclly Eastcoast rap....
-
Sorry, someone gotta say it, but illmatic is definitely overrated. It is NOT the greatest album EVER made!!!
j/k ;D My fav. second album of all time...

yeah, i had illmatic for a couple of years, didnt find it hard to get into, i fell in love with it at the first listen. But it gets better every time i listen to it, juste like ready to die and wu tang. i dont really dig reasonnable doubt though, dont know why, some songs are tight. An other great album to me is me against the world, its my personnal favorite of all time.
