Title: can anyone recommend a decent horror flick?
Post by: Don Seer on January 26, 2006, 10:54:43 AM

me and a friend watch movies most tuesdays.. and she likes horror flicks.. (we dont only watch horror) but lately it seems stuff is mismarketed as 'scary' when its just hack n slash.. e.g. devils rejects.. need something that makes you jump!

here's a quick list of stuff we've watched in the last few months.. broken down by what we like/didnt

liked... Saw, Saw II, Dawn of the dead (remake), batman begins

kinda liked. House of wax remake, the exorcism of emily rose, land of the dead

didnt feel..  Dark Water, Devils Rejects, flightplan

I hope you weren't implying that "Batman Begins" was a horror...LOL. With that being said, I have two movies in mind. If you're looking for a true horror movie, rent "High Tension". Great story, retro style horror, yet very refined. Another one, especially if you're looking for jump-scares (as you said) would be "Toolbox Murders"...It's a new movie by the legendary Tobe Hooper ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Potergeist" "Salems Lot", etc.). It's his best in the last 15 years or so...You should check those out if you get the chance.

BTW, "Devils Rejects" was a sequel to "House of 1000 Corpses". Hopefully you saw "House of 100 Corpses" first...I actually liked "The Devils Rejects", although I see why you wouldn't. It's very much cult...

Man, Dark Water was trash. I can't believed I paid money to see it. I enjoyed Hostel, so I recommend that.

Night of The Living Dead, Dawn of The Dead and Day of The Dead. All three are much better than the Dawn of The Dead remake.

The "Ring" movies, the Japanese versions are better than the American but they are all pretty good.

If you want a freaky/weird type horror, check out "May" as well. It's kinda' like a recent day "Carrie", but the storyline is way different. Saw it a few weeks back and thought it was pretty good...
