Title: Anyone else dig Kevin Smith movies (Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma etc)
Post by: Lincoln on February 04, 2006, 06:54:39 PM
That guy is a fucking genius, the movies from the ViewAskewniverse (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) are among my favourite movies. Jay is one of the funniest movie characters of all time, his monologue in Clerks in classic:

Man, I feel good today Silent Bob, we're gonna make some money. And you know what we're gonna go? We're gonna go to that party, we're gonna get some pussy. I'm gonna fuck this bitch I'm gonna fuck this bitch, I'll fuck anything that moves! Yo, what the fuck are you lookin' at? I'll kick your fuckin' ass! Shit, yeah. Don't that motherfucker owe me ten bucks? Ya know fuckin' tonight, we're gonna rip off this fuckers head, take out his fuckin' soul. Remind me if he tries to buy something, I'm gonna shit in the motherfuckers bag.

Yo what's up baby? What's up sluts? Yeah.

Silent Bob, you're a lewd motherfucker you know that? Cute as hell. I'd like to go down on you, suck you. Line up three other guys, make like a circus seal.

Eww you fuckin' faggot! I hate guys... I love women! What you want Grizzley Adams?

If you haven't seen any, or have only seen some I recommend watching all 5.

Chasing Amy wasn't really a comedy but the small Jay and Silent Bob scene from it was among their best.

I can't wait for Clerks 2.

Yeah they are all great and very funny movies.  The audio commentary in Mallrats is fucking hilarious too.

I can't wait for Clerks 2.

Chasing Amy had some comedic elements to it, Jason Lee's character's repressed homosexuality (a recurring theme in these movies) is quite funny, but other than that it is a good movie with a really strong storyline.

Kevin Smith is definetly in my top 5 movie directors list. I think i've talked on here about his movies before. I can't wait till Clerks II comes out.

I haven't seen Jersey Girl, don't really plan on it either but I agree, I'm glad to see they're not getting rid of Jay and Silent Bob.

clerks 2 is gonna be the movie with jay & silent bob in it. jay & silent bob strike back was meant to be the last one, but kevin smith told jay that if he quit drugs, he'd do another movie involving those 2 characters

on a side note, all of the movies actually go along a time line too (not sure if most of you knew that)

first its clerks, then mallrats is set a few days later
then its chasing amy, with dogma set a few days after that

in between chasing amy & dogma, there's actually a comic which explains how they get from new jersey to chicago

i think there's also a comic which takes place in between dogma & jay & silent bob strike back also

I also liked the scene in the bar where Affleck thinks the girl singing to him.

I wasn't trying to say Amy was bad by saying it wasn't a comedy, I was just trying to emphasize how funny the Jay and Silent Bob part in it is eventhough the movie wasn't a comedy.

Yeah, that bar scene is great. I think it's great how she runs down, and he gets ready for her to run up to him and she starts kissing the girl, Affleck's look is priceless.

It's hard to say because of some inconsistencies, such as the beginning of Jay and Silent Bob has the dialogue (Are you even supposed to be here today?) from Clerks, along with the sign that is made in Clerks (Yes We Are Open), so it references the previous movie.

I've seen all 5 movies and they're all pretty good, especially the Jay and Silent Bob scenes. Those are priceless. I think I liked Dogma the most, probably because Salma Hayek is in it and she is just so bonable.

Can't be the same day, since Clerks ends at night time.

Then you obviously haven't paid attention to "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back"...The continuity is probably fucked up and all, but Randal and Dante are still in the Quick Stop together, with the same sign out front ("I Assure You, We're Open!") and with Dante continuisly complaining ("I'm not even supposed to be here today!")...Then Randal tells Jay "Hey, I said no dealing in front of the store!" (a refrence to a scene which took place earlier that day in "Clerks" where Randal asked Jay not to deal in front of the store)...Then Dante and Randal file a restraining order on Jay & Silent Bob, and they have to leave Quick Stop...That's when their adevnture begins...Watch it again if you don't believe me...PeACe

No, I noticed all of that. Other than the fact that Clerks ends at night, all signs point towards it being the same day. I'm just pointing out that the night scenes and ending in Clerks point to more of a continuity error than anything.

1. Mallrats Occurs
2. Clerks Occurs
3. Chasing Amy Occurs
4. Dogma Occurs
5. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Occur

check the booklet that comes with the chasing amy dvd;

Mallrats takes place on Friday
Clerks takes place on the following Saturday
Chasing Amy is 2 years after Clerks
Dogma takes place about two weeks to a month after Chasing Amy based on the graphic novel that explains how it is the Jay and Silent Bob got to IL.

http://www.teamoverkill.com/askew/history/timeline2.htm

in J&SBSB it might look like the movie takes place the same time as Clerks .. but there was no restraining order in Clerks since Jay & Silent Bob are seen at night at the store, and Dante and Randall are in different clothes so its pretty much coincidence that Dante is stuck at work again and those "savages" jammed gum in the locks, again .. to me it looks like it takes place a few years later than the previous 4 movies ..for our references we have Jay referring to God as "She" (Dogma), and they save Suzanne the ape (Chasing Amy). The only other references are that Holden sold to Bankey "years ago" (Chasing Amy), and Brody has a poster hanging up about leaving the "Tonight Show" and the line "Would you like a chocolate covered pretzel?" (Mallrats)

I dunno, I think you're wrong. There are so many references in the movie pointing towards it being the same day...Randall IS wearing his CCCP hockey jersey. And why would the shutters still be jammed with the same sign out front? In "Clerks", Dante said they were getting the shutters replaced Tuesday, which means "Jay & Silent Bob" should occur between Saturday and Tuesday...I think the references to "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma" were just inside jokes within the movie...Who knows though.

Well, without the interview (or some sort of proof that it's not the same day), I don't really know what to believe...But based on what I saw, it looks to me like it's a continuation of "Clerks"... Post up the interview, or timeline, or whatever, and maybe I'll change my mind...PeACe

Excerpted from the View Askewniverse Tenth Anniversery Almanac-

"You can try to figure it out (I've spent the last year trying to do so; that's why I'm so late on Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do and Daredevil: Target... I swear), but it's about as confusing as Holden(McNeil)'s three-way proposal: Mallrats comes before Clerks, the third issue of Chasing Dogma repeats a version of itself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the Clerks Cartoon doesn't even count (except Bear is Driving - he rules us all). Best just to offer it all to God and let Her it out while you kick back and enjoy the witty dialogue and ass-fucking jokesthat are the spine of most View Askew productions"

That really doesn't confirm that "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" isn't the same day as "Clerks"...
