Ballin' is second nature for Inglewood, Ca. gangsta rapper Mack 10, who came up through this thugged out trajectory. Even though he's now taken his stylings to Southern Hip-Hop powerhouse, Cash Money Records, where he released his latest offering, Bang or Ball, he's still "West Coast to the fullest." While getting his ride hooked up with rims, Mack talked to SOHH for a hot minute and gave us the scoop on his move to the South, his wife, TLC's T-Boz, his mentor/ best friend Ice Cube and name-brand producers.
What made you switch from Priority to Cash Money Records?
I was a fan already, a Cash Money fan. My contract was up at [Priority] so I was a free agent. So they made me a really good deal.
Is there any difference between the two labels?
It ain’t really no difference. Just for doing a lot of work down South. I'm still Mack 10.
Tell us a bit about Bang or Ball. What were your expectations with the LP?
I did the whole record like in two weeks. (Laughs). I think it'll go platinum eventually. It's almost gold now. I think Bang and Ball is one of the best albums next to my first one. [With this album], I had to prove that I could still get down like that. I can still get down and dirty. This album is straight street. I had to show everybody that I was the coldest motherf*cka on my coast. Straight grimey, gutter sh*t.
What producers do you have on the album?
Well, I've never picked producers by their name, like name brand type of shit. I’ve never really cared about that shit. I was selling gold and platinum records before The Neptunes came out. (Nothing against The Neptunes.) It's cool, I got Dr. Dre on this album, and he made my first single. But commonly, I've never depended on a producer to make my records.
How's your marriage going with T-Boz and how have you dealt with her having Sickle-Cell Anemia?
It's great that she's my wife. She ain't really sick like that; it’s a difference. If she was really sick it would probably bother me. But she's not really sickly like that. It ain't the way people make it sound to be.
What has Ice Cube meant to you, personally and artistically?
Personally, he’s been one of my best friends over the last ten years. Artistically, he's really taught me a lot. He gave me the blueprint to the game and he’s been real.
How's Hoo-Bangin' Records going?
I still got it. I have a new album coming out on Hoo-Bangin' called The Hood. And a new MC Eiht album named Underground Hero.
You said you’re doing a lot of work in the South, how does it compare to your hood, Inglewood, Ca.?
I take Inglewood wherever I go cause that's all I know. It's cool working in the South. It don't really make a difference. I'm a West coast n*gga wherever. Wherever I'm lying at on the earth I'm West Coast to the fullest.
Any movie roles you have in the works, independent or mainstream?
No. I'm just really concentrating on doing my album. Then I'll get back into it fulltime. Whichever pay me more. I don't really care about being up on the big screen. If I can get more money the other way.
So as an actor you're not on that Ice Cube level yet?
I mean it's cool but shit, I'll take it however I can get it homes. I'll take independent money. You make more.
Being that you have the same representation as Suge Knight have you been hearing anything on Suge and Death Row in Cali?
I don’t get into that shit homey. I just do me. Whatever Suge and Death Row got going is whatever Suge and Death Row got going. I just worry about Hoo-Bangin'.
How was it being on the "Up in Smoke" tour?
It was wonderful. It was a helluva of a tour. I'm a veteran. I really don't get down like that no more on the road. Like out wilding and partying and shit. Now we just want to get our money and get the fuck home. Get our money and hit the next set. I don't be wilding out and shit no more. I've had that years ago, I'm been doing this so long it's all about money to me.
Describe a typical day in Inglewood for Mack 10, pre-making records?
Shit, get up. Do what I got to do in the hood, you know hit the block. Do what I got to do. That was my motherf*ckin’ routine everyday.
Describe the progression from your first LP to this one?
I've matured a lot. I’ve experienced a lot of different things. So coincidentally my subject matter is a little different but it's basically the same. I've experienced a lot more shit now in my life than I had as a young artist.
