One of hip hop’s favorite subject matters is money. Whether it's underground cats talking about not having it, mainstream rappers acting like they have it or rappers who actually have it and let us know all about it. Do you ever wonder how much they really make? Well, Dr. Dre, producer extraordinaire and Interscope Records executive made a whole lot in the year 2001, 31.5 million to be exact.
Dre made Forbes Magazine’s list for the highest earning celebrities, he ranked 21st. Not too bad for a man who started out selling tapes out the back of his car and making his name by DJing house parties.

31,5$ and DETOX and The Eminem Show is soon dropping...
And keep in mind that this guy was born and raised in the Ghetto, and God knows what he did back in the day to survive... man I´m pride of Dr. Dre, he´s my hero... ;)
What about Snoop? I wonder how much money he´d made last year, with all his movies and shit?

WRONG!
I'm not dissing the independent artists, but even though they may make more money per album and such... their fan base is anything but big... so yes, they make more money off of an album sale, but they don't get any way near the amount of money a mainstream artist makes... just because of their fan base.

When Tupac died, he had under $100 000 in the bank.
-
Ish, that's a lot.
I remember years back reading in the Guiness Record-book, that the richest music-producer is Master P.
Back then he had 70$ mill. at disposal.
If Dre invests his money wisely he must surpass that sooner or l8er, at least when Rakim/Eminem/Truth Hurts etc. is dropping.
-
dre made $31.5 milllion to put in the bank.. the $70 million you're talking about P havin at his disposal is the projected value of his label...
-
31 million and he didnt even release an album?? damn thats pretty good!!!

No, that was Master P's income as I understood it.
Thereoff the term "best paid producer".
-
damn Dre's definitley makin the money
31, 32 million shit, thats a LOT, especially for not makin an album that year
-
If dre went independent, he'd likely sell as much, so yes, independent, all other things equal, means much more money.

If you think that way... yes... Dre already has a name... most independent cats dont have the name... and dont have the funds to put a name out their either... so yea... if your big and almighty... independent is cool... but remember... it all comes out of your pocket...

Yeah, all these major label artists make 1 or 2 dollars a cd. On top of that, they might get a signing bonus. Out of that, they have to pay their producers off, pay their guest artists off, pay for studio time, pay everything the record label puts out, it's ridiculous.
Say you sell 500,000, that's gold. Outta that, you make 1 million dollars, 2 dollars a cd. Plus, they gave you a 1 million dollar bonus for it. Now, not counting tour money, etc., you've got 2 million dollars, with 8 producers to pay back. 4 other rappers you're tryna break into the game, etc. etc. That's why snoop does so much other crap, he ain't makign money off music.
-
gotta rememba that dre didn't even release an album last year and he still earned that much! it's surprising really...

Good post.
First of all, about 2Pac, i think that we dont know the real deal about his money. I mean it's stupid to write: "Suge robbed him". Or "Suge doesnt pay his artists". 2Pac made commercials on tv and on the journals, he made a lot of movies, he made albums BEFORE Suge, he made thousands of collaborations with other rappers (= $$$), he made def a lot of thing and he was paid for sure. After his death he just had 100,000$? Well.. i dont blame Suge Knight for this fact. I blame the absence of a real father in his life. The absence of a positive figure in his life. And of a man who cared about his money. He was happy with his life. He had Benz, he had houses, fast cars, parties, he was living a fast life, but a life full of benefits too. He was a star at Hollywood and he was all over the journals, and MTV etc.. He just didnt have enought attention about his money. I think he was lucky already to be out of jail. And he was happy about it. He didnt care a lot about money. About his unborn son, about his family, etc.. He just lived a fast life and when he died, his mother all of a sudden realized he had no money and guys started to blame Suge. WTF? If you roll with business men, you gotta be a business man too. If you aint a good business man, they'll robb you! It's like when you play at Poker. If you play with professionists and you dont even know what a "Pair" means... they'll robb you! That's what happened to Pac in my opinion. He was just too happy that he wasnt in jail and that he was living his life as a star that he didnt even thought about money. About "what will i give to my son when i'll quit this life?" etc.. But i respect this shit because it's his life.
Second thing.. Personally i think that it's very very hard to work in the music factory and to make money like you deserve. I mean.. when you sing to a record label, you gotta consider that there are a lot of men that works for the same label. And i'm not talking about singers only. I'm talking about producers, promoters, managers, secretaries, techinicists, etc.. They are all in the same ship! Plus you have to add lawyers, the managers of the artists, tv, mtv, distributors labels etc..
I've seen that a lot of rappers has had problems with money. From the already quoted 2Pac to Warren G. Look at Warren G! He has had so many problems with record labels and with guys trying to make money off of him.
It's very important to know what you represent, the money you move and it's extremely important to have a good business manager watching your back.
The examples are a lot: see Kurupt. See Daz Dillinger. See Warren G. See 2Pac. And we are talking about some of the most known rappers of the West Coast.
It's def hard to make the right money expecially because usually when a new talent sign a deal with a record label, he's just 20-25 and he didnt go to school and he doesnt know a shit about law and business.
I think the most important step for the career of a rapper who doesnt want to be indipendent is to have a professional crew of lawyers and managers. But that's just my opinion! (maybe because i'm a lawyer too! LOL!)
Holla back.
