IF ANYBODY MISSED IT, HERE IS THE INTERVIEW FROM XXL MAG WITH KNOCTURNAL.
How'd you go from a four-year bid to hookin' up with Dr. Dre?
I got out of jail and met Big D, that's my CEO at LA Confidential, the label i'm signed to [under Elektra]. He knew Dre for a while, worked on the Aftermath album with him... He brought me in, i met Dre and the same day started rapping two or three bars. [Dre] shut me up and said, "I'll give him two thumbs up and a big toe." Then he was like, "That's the song you got for your album?" And i was like, "Yeah, but it don't have to be." The he looked at D and said, "It's a wonder what a right answer could make." Then he was like, "Well, go in there and record this song for my album." That's how 'Bang Bang' [Dr. Dre 2001] got started.
Why were you in the Pen?
Robbing people. Selling dope really wasn't my thing 'cause i used to do a lot of dumb shit like walk straight up to an undercover, and don't nobody know this fool, and i'm running halfway down the block and trying to hide in people's backyards. So i just said if i'ma have somebody chasing me, i might as well just do something [for] two-three minutes, get me about 10 G's after running up in this bank, and i'm cool. I used to stalk out private businesses, see which day they take the blue or green safety deposit bag to the bank, and just slap them with a pistol before they walk in the door.
Dre calls you a "Hook Genious". Is that natural, or were you always geared towards making hooks that were crazy?
I used to make a whole lot of raps, and people used to say, "Your hooks is dope. You got defense, you just gotta work on your offense when it comes to your delivery." So i had to like sharpen up my skills as far as verses was concerned.
Are you singing on the 'Bad Intentions' hook?
That's me singing. It's not really a hook, [there's] not really a format to it. One [part] is 12 bars, the other is 16 bars, so it's really more of a jingle than a hook.
If you and Ja Rule had a harmonizing battle, who do you think would win?
He can't sing. He sings like his stomach hurts. Don't get me wrong, he can write like a muthafucka. He just can't sing.
You had a ball creating 'Bad Intentions', huh?
That record was one of the funnest records i've ever done. We got so drunk and high as hell, stayed in the studio for 48 hours straight. The record that me and Dre have for staying in the studio non-stop is 76 hours. We stayed in the studio 76 hours one day making The Wash soundtrack. No sleep, no nothing. Hennessey, blunts, 40's and food.
Being that you're rolling with Dre, are you fearful of Suge being out there?
Nah. He a bully. I ain't scared of bullies for one, and two, Dre left Death Row before Suge went to jail. I would probably be a little more weary if i was running with Snoop's camp or Daz, because they said things about the man when he was incarcerated. But Dre, he was a man about his. He left before the ship sunk.
What can we look forward to on your new joint, Knoc's Landing?
I'm talking about having fun man, bringing peace back to LA. Muthafuckas is crazy out here. I'm from Long Beach, I bang, but so what? That ain't the extent of my life. When i was in jail, none of them muthafuckas sent me a goddamn thing, so what i'ma glorify they ass on record for? Some people right now, in my opinion, do too much worrying about banging instead of focusing on making a good song. [There's] more people in society that want to have fun than people that want to be tough.[/QB]
