Title: Lakers to sign Jim Jackson?
Post by: Now_Im_Not_Banned on March 05, 2006, 12:29:29 PM

Los Angeles Times-
The Lakers have engaged in talks with Jim Jackson in an effort to sign the 14-year veteran guard-forward, who was waived last week by Phoenix.

Jackson, 35, could add an outside touch down the stretch for a team that has shot inconsistently. The Lakers have $2.5 million remaining from their midlevel exception and could offer Jackson a prorated portion of it, about $500,000 for the rest of the season.

Jackson, 6 feet 6 and 220 pounds, played in 27 games this season for the Suns and averaged 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 15.6 minutes. He has not played since Jan. 4.

Last season, he averaged 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds and added a veteran presence to a Phoenix team that won a league-best 62 games and lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals.

I suggested that the Lakers sign Jim Jackson as soon as he was waived from Phoenix, and now it looks like there's a good possibility it may happen...Hopefully they do it, it can add depth and a reliable back-up for Kobe since Laron Profit is out for the season...Lakers really tryna make some noise now... 8)

He had a good season last year, with some 20pts-efforts. That would be a good move without a doubt  and add some experience which is welcomed in our team  8)

He's played with many teams so he could adjust, but the triangle is prety complicated, :-\ But I was all for him signing with the Lakers.

i've always liked Jim Jackson, probably becaus he had 2 good seasons with the Rockets, but this wud definately be a plus for the Lakers..it really can't hurt.

Yeah signing a vet can only help their youngish roster. Hopefully also take some minutes off Brown, who's a failure.

Not that he's a PF, but you know how rotation goes. Don't front.

Man Kwame is already averaging 25 mins per game..
Naw, i think he'll replace Sasha Vujacic in the rotation.
And Turiaf will share some minutes with Cook and Brown.

Brown should get 10 minutes at best (on a team that wants to make noise) ... the Bobcats can give him 25 minutes if he's lucky.. but not the Lakers.

Man Kwame is not doing anything for on offence but Defensively he is doing a pretty good job and thats all we need from him right now.

Man he's basically (still?) a role player, exactly like Brian Cook. Cook is our offensive PF, and Brown is our defensive one. None of them is starting material (yet?). The problem of our starting 5 is that we have both Mihm and Brown who are totally defensive minded. We lack an offensive minded PF who could get the ball inside (Cook has great offensive awarness, but he's basically a SG, when we attack). If we could replace Mihm with... i don't know.. Frye.. Frye-Brown, now that's a good mix i'd like to see. Frye is not ready yet to start for us, but damn that mix could be very good.

I agree. He d'ed up good on Rasheed Wallace yesterday and has done well defensively against Shaq and Yao Ming. IMO, Kwame's defense > Cook's offense.

Anyway, I'm all or signing Jim Jackson, especially since that will hopefully reduce or eliminate Sasha and Luke's playing time.

LOL. It's okay, he obviously has no idea what he's talking about...Brown is our best defensive body for a big. Why would the signing of Jim Jackson take away minutes from that?...LMAO. Make sense...PeACe

You have NO idea what you're talking about. Either that, or you haven't seen the Lakers play. Brown is one of our only players who can guard the elite bigs in the league. His physicaly ability is VERY useful on the defensive end, though he hasn't broke out into an elite player himself yet...If Brown only played 10 minutes a game, it would REALLY hurt our front-court defense drastically...PeACe

Actually, Mihm is more of an offensive player...Cook is not the best defender, but Brown has done great so far defending the 4 and 5. Mihm CAN play defense, but he's more offensive-minded and very foul prone. Cook plays like a SG, but man, that don't mean a thing. Look at players like Nowitzki, Kirilenko, Gasol, etc...They like to play the SG typa' game, but they're still bigs...It's the same story for Cook, I've seen him post up some players a few times, he just prefers to shoot...Now, Turiaf, he's pretty balanced. He can provide offense AND defense. I think he should be getting more minutes, probably about 15 a game...I'd like Frye, but he's not ready for our system, he'd still be making a grip of errors...We can win with what we have, just SIGN Jim Jackson!...PeACe

Jim Jackson Signed, Medvedenko Released
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
March 6, 2006

With an eye to the immediate future, the Lakers said goodbye to part of their past, signing free-agent swingman Jim Jackson and waiving injured forward Slava Medvedenko.

Jackson, 35, will be asked to add a veteran presence and outside touch to a team that has shot inconsistently throughout the season but is fighting for a playoff spot.

On his 12th team in 14 seasons, Jackson played in 27 games this season before being released by the Phoenix Suns last week, averaging 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 15.6 minutes. He has not played since Jan. 4 but was practicing with the Suns until he was waived. His minutes were reduced this season when Phoenix added Eddie House and James Jones.

Jackson, the fourth overall pick in the 1992 draft, averaged 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds last season for a Phoenix team that won a league-best 62 games and lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals.

Jackson, 6 feet 6 and 220 pounds, will be paid about $500,000, his contract contingent on passing a physical today in Los Angeles. It is not expected to be a problem.

Medvedenko, who will be 27 next month, played only two games this season and underwent season-ending surgery in January for a herniated disk in his back.

Signed as a free agent in August 2000, Medvedenko played on two Laker championship teams. He was re-signed to a two-year, $6-million deal before the 2004-05 season but played only 23 games after that because of injuries and ineffectiveness.

For his career, Medvedenko has averaged 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 249 games.

Hell yea!!!...Good choice with the waiving of Medvedenko as well, seeing as he's becoming injury prone and was out for the season anyways...This should really help...PeACe

He probably "sucks" right now, but hey, he's one of the most improved player in our roster, this season. In the last summer could you have immagined him making some clutch shots or starting 4 times, or playing good minutes in the 4th quarter? He got the balls and the skills, he's just too young and immature to play in the NBA, at the moment. But he's still 22, and he's a 6-7 PG. We gotta give him some time to develope into a pretty good role player.

game's about to get underway soon. still wish i could see this game tho caus the Lakers and Spurs are both HOT right now.

big game for LA in my opinion for people to take them seriously. Utah's up by 10 in the 3rd quarter against Orlando and the Kings have already won against the Nets. LA's gotta keep their distance from those two. (and Houston  ;))

"Homer"? Is that what you like to call REAL fans who show pride?

You: Fuck Luke! He sucks. Phil is an idiot for playing him.
Real Laker Fan: Phil should have put Devean George on Richard Hamilton. Luke doesn't have the foot speed to match up.

You: Sasha sucks. He should be sent to the D-League for good, I don't know how he got in the NBA!!
Real Laker Fan: With Jim Jackson here, I wonder if Sasha might actually gain some confidence if he got 30 minutes of playing time a night in the D-League. He might actually be able to give the Lakers a huge boost down the stretch.

See the difference? You are not a Laker fan...You show no signs of true Laker pride, and you aren't a very good supporter of the team. Antonio almost made the same mistake earlier in the season, but he has totally redeemed himself, and now he knows the right ways to support our team...You, my friend, are not a Laker fan. Maybe a Kobe fan, but DEFINITELY not a Laker fan...PeACe

Nik the problem with me (i take it personal, but it's worth for every guy in the same situation as me) is that i ain't that fluent in english. Plus i live in Italy, where nobody hates the Lakers (actually 90% of the  NBA fans supports them because of the Kobe and Shaq era, you know, and because Kobe lived in Italy...). So it's a whole different scenario. I didn't understood YOUR scenario, where you as a Laker fan has to survive against all the hate of the Laker-haters. I didn't really understood the "beat L.A." thing until this season. I was simply real with myself, criticizing things i felt were to be criticized, and supporting the good things. But now that i've understood YOUR scenario (and the one of the forum), i've changed, by going more defensive. I still think we made a mistake by trading Butler and Atkins (2 starters) for Kwame, but from now i'll try to say it in a different way, trying to find the good things out of it (Kwame's age, his defence, etc..). You know what's a real problem? It's that sometimes my english is more like "Sasha sucks" rather than "With Jim Jackson here, I wonder if Sasha might actually gain some confidence if he got 30 minutes of playing time a night in the D-League. He might actually be able to give the Lakers a huge boost down the stretch". Sometimes i think the second thing, but i'm able to write only the first, because my english ain't that good. I hade to understand YOUR scenario, that's all.

Really?

PG: Smush -young

SG: kobe -10 year vet

SF: Lamar - 7 years

PF: Kwame Brown- 5 years

C: Chris Mihm- 6 years

D.George -7 years

B.Cook & L.Walton were apart of the 2004 Laker team that went to the NBA Finals, they got a lot of experience there..........Sasha & Smush are the only young guys that get a lot of playing time.

Our 4 rookies don't get any playing time, they are the reason why we are the 2nd youngest team in the NBA. that stat in a little misleading.

1) The oldest of the guys you listed is 27.
2) It doesn't matter if a player has played other years in the League: they are players of the Lakers now, and that's a whole different story. Being a Laker player can kill everybody, even "real" veterans like Malone and Payton, even Rice, even Richmond. It ain't easy, the pressure is tremendous.
3) Being a member of the 3peat (you quoted Cook and Luke) doesn't make you an experienced player. Cause the scenario is totally different. Get it, man, it's a totaly new scenario for us, even for Phil Jackson! We're an expansion team right now, trying to build from zero. You can't compare it to when we were the best team in the world.

We lost to the blazers!!!!  had a bad home stand, lost to BAD teams in the last road trip!!..  WTF do you want me to say?...

"oh,they're getting better, this is just a slump" ? ::)...  And STFU with your "real fan" bullshit, there's actually a small % of Laker fans that think like you.

Yeah, there are lots of disappointing pessimists like you who consider themselves Laker fans. Think of the Lakers as YOUR team. Would you tell your team "you guys suck, you're about to go on a 7 game losing streak", or would you even dare to say something like that in public? Real fans have more heart, especially Laker fans, because being a Laker fan is tradition, it's something you should honor, and it calls for the ultimate support, especially publicly...Not saying that you can't say players are playing bad, or that the team didn't perform well, you just can't completely shit on them when your mad, and make ludicrous predictions like "theyre gunna go on a 7 game losing streak and be a lottery team"...That just sucks to here from a fellow 'Laker fan'...Just realize that we ARE beating the odds, and have more to look forward to in the future from this organization, so dont just spit on 'em when they need the most support, especially not when they're still in the playoffs...PeAce

Once again man just stop thinking about ourself like we're still the Shaq team. Compare us to the Bobcats! We're building from zero, trying to motivate our 20-23 years old guys, trying to make them better than what they are, trying to build some confidence in people who  2-3 years ago were only dreaming about the NBA. I've met Vujacic a couple of times here in Italy, and i can swear you to be in the NBA was just a fucking dream, for him. He was a 17 years old kid dreaming about the NBA, like me and you. Then all of a sudden he got selected, he went crazy. Totally crazy. He cried for days. That's our backup PG, man. That's a player who's averaging 20 mins per game, and who started 4 times, playing a lot of times during the 4th quarters (so much that shit he had some clutch shots too, remember the Jazz?). Obviously he "sucks". I mean obviously he can't be compared to Nash, Kidd, Wade, Iverson, those kind of players. Obviously he gets outplayed everytime by those "legends". But there's no need to disrespect him, he's a guy trying the best he can to be the best player possible for the Lakers. You simply gotta realize that's the team we have right now. With Vujacic and Walton playing 20 minutes per game, with Bynum being the youngest player ever selected in the draft, etc.. That's our team. You can react in two ways:

1) refusing to accept it, and spending the whole day crying about a loss to the Blazers
2) accepting it, and waiting for better days (or, better, for those players to develope into better players)

I've lost patience too, a couple of times. But i can't accept Laker fans dissing Vujacic, Parker, and those kind of players. I've dissed Kwame, cause being a #1 draft pick means you're used to have a lot of pressure on you, and you can handle it. But Parker and Vujacic played in average teams in Europe, two years ago. C'mon!!

Just accept the fact that's our team right now. It's a new page, a new era. We gotta live till better days supporting those guys.

WOW!  you can't be this retarded?(NIK not Antonio)  So i should support Laker players that don't come to play every night? Laker players that don't give a fuck about the Purple & Gold?  That's what i get mad at b/c im a REAL Lakers fan...There's no reason why Lamar and the rest of the guys can't play the way they did against the pistons every night...

The question is: who are the "real" Lakers? The ones who lost to the Hawks or the ones who won against the Pistons? I still gotta understand it. This team has a lot of potential, but since they are so young, isn't it possible that they just played 110% against the Pistons? And you can do it once, twice, not 82 times. That's not our level. The Pistons are obviously better than us. So just thank God we defeated the Heat, the Pistons, the Mavs... elite teams, better than us (this year). We gotta start from those games to get some confidence. But it ain't easy, it's a long trip. Just be patient. That's year 1.

^^Exactly.

KB 81 expects us to be some elite team, is he retarded? We came with some analysts predicting us to finish last in the West...We're making playoffs throughout the season, reaching for a 7th or 6th seed, and showing improvement. No pride. No heart. Pessimist. Laker fan?

That's the problem, you can't judge them on one game...Tonight is gunna be VERY tough. This is the first sporting event in New Orleans since Katrina, it's gunna be huge, emotions are gunna be runnin' through the building, the the Hornets will definitely do whatever it takes to supply the fans with a gift...One top of that, they are a good team and are very hungry because they're on a losing streak and are in the playoff race...Lakers might have to play even harder than they did against the Pistons to win it...It should be a good game...Who knows what the outcome'll be. I think the Lakers can do it...We'll see...PeACe

Fact of the matter is, they tend to make simple mistakes and have fucked up games because of their inexperience in the NBA and especially within the triangle...THERES NO NEED TO GET DOWN ON EM BECAUSE OF IT, ESPECIALLY NOT PUBLICLY...PeACe

You guys are understimating the lack of veteran players. I've always said Ron Harper, Brian Shaw, Rick Fox... those players were not only the support cast, but FUNDAMENTAL for our titles. We miss a Ron Harper, a Brian Shaw type of player. An Aaron McKie player. A Jim Jackson player. Players who have experience and leadership, players who ain't scared in the 4th quarters, players you can trust, who can help teammates when you make a mistake and you feel the pressure on you. That's why the signing of Jackson is FUNDAMENTAL. He can really be the piece of the puzzle we miss to win them close games. I dunno if he could help us from the next games (i think he needs at least a month to get used to the triangle and to "use" his leadership to the young guards), but he will, for sure, in the future.
