Title: "Up Rolls The Riot Van And Sparks Excitement In The Boys...But The Policemen..."
Post by: Rud on March 22, 2006, 02:13:38 AM
Jesus, this album has unbelievable replay value, not played an album of this ilk so much since the mid 90s with "whats the story" - lots of new UK acts are putting out fantastic music, shame all the albums arent as solid throughout

class act and release that for one lived up to the hype and although i have had that demo for months thanks to

so many classic lines, one-liners, melodies, phrases...its got the works :)

thank you Arctic Monkeys for a quality release :)

Superb album, front to back.

You're right about the one-liners... love that line in 'Fake Tales...': "The band was fucking wank and I'm not having a nice time"

I've been getting into a lot more of this type of stuff in the past couple of years... it's just refreshing to put something different on if you've been listening to hip-hop all day. The other ones I keep bumping at the moment are the Hard-Fi and Ordinary Boys albums - more commercial, but just fun music...

That just isn't true. Do you really think they would have played Saturday Night Live and have had the highest US independent guitar debut ever if they weren't getting at least some good reviews over there? They are selling out all the shows in America and definetely have a large fan base in comparision with the amount of time they have been out.

Even Noel Gallagher has praised them. That is like a blessing from God.

Some new Monkeys related news for everyone as well. They have an EP out around April/May time:

Four new songs on it. Not sure how different Cigarette Smoker Fiona will be from the demo. Departure Lounge is a song they have been playing at US gigs, it is a tune. The lads are wasting no time in between releases, might as well strike while the iron is hot.

Well the first guy critising goes on to say:

"How about approaching the group's debut album for what it is: a promising first effort with infectiously energetic playing and some deft songwriting. The hyper single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" has an unshakable hook; the more melodic "Mardy Bum" showcases the young band's facility with dynamics, and the change-of-pace slow corker "Riot Van," detailing underage drinking and a run-in with the cops, boasts a winning sense of realism."

So he can't be that against it. And the next line is - "Better than the Beatles" could doom this deserving band before they get started here. How about: "Better than The Strokes?" - which indicates he probably has a problem with the hype more then anything.

And as for the guy at the Oakland Times, I assume he is refering to this gig in SF: http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/14096988.htm

Goodness gracious.

I liked the Hard Fi album at first, but it is easily worn out. Loses all appeal after a while. Hard To Beat is still an absolute tune.

That Babyshambles album is nice but Arcade Fire was the best album of last year.

i saw their concert sunday night, dope shit, i got crunk as hell with my 2 best freiends, there wasnt that many people, the opening band sucked, then they finaly came out, to warren g's regulators, how awesome is that, so they basically did all the songs off the cd, exept riot and they did, 1 or 2 new songs, i dont rember, i was pretty drunk, and wilding out, really awesome, a little short, iwanted them to do some pre album songs, like choo choo, or cigarette smoke, but watever, alex is the shit tho, some of the stuff he was saying, hillarious, he looked really blazed also, but yea, all in all, dope concert, and arctic monkeys are awesome

Coming out to Regulate is no suprise, the boys are rap fans. When I've seen them they came out to Dre. No suprise about them not doing any of the earlier stuff either, they never do. New EP has got some radio play over here, the songs are a pretty different direction. Despair... is just Alex with his guitar, Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys is a tune, more like what you would expect from them but kinda weird structurally. Cigarette Smoker Fiona is weird, same tune but not sure about the new lyrics, only heard a shit recording mind.  And No Buses is not too far away from early Beatles.

Theres also the live recording of a newish song, very good. Not on the EP, good call for the next album though I'd say. http://www.theupload.com/viewfile.php?id=00026248
