Let's make it offical. Since so many of you were unsatisfied with the other pole (http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=107437.0) (how could you forget Quik?) here's a better poll. Tried to include all of the most logical options/the ones mentioned in the other poll. Sorry if I missed anyone.

Dr. Dre
-
of all time ??? dre
-
DJ Quik.
He is by far the most consistent (I like the stuff he did in 91 and still loving Trauma) and creative.
No diss to Dre but his beats are more "up-down" type beats, where Quik does complex and different beats.
-
I'd say Dre is one of the best producers, but in my opinion Quik is the best West Coast producer.
-
madlib
is he from westcoast ???
if so.. then Madlib
-
Quik...
-
Have to go with Dre, because I got a lot more Quik stuff to listen to.
And I really think that Ant Banks should've been here. He's very tallented.
-

i voted daz, to me hes been makin tht west coast sound most consistantly

Dr.Dre, i mean most of those guys wouldn´t have been discussed as great producers if it weren´t for Dre. if you vote Warren G or Daz you´re basically voting for Dre aswell. and would Quik have made all of this amazing music if Dre hadn´t paved the way for him and that sound or would he have gone in a different direction? i´m voting for Dre coz since 85 he´s been dropping dope shit and he´s still doin it way bigger and better then everybody else on this list. if it would´ve been the best beat maker i prolly would´ve gone with Quik but as we all know producing is a lot more then just layin beats down. and we all know that Dre has no competitiom what so ever when it comes to gettin the best outta artists and that´s a HUGE part of producing that everybody else on this list lacks.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I picked Dre.
Three or four years ago, I would have easily said DJ Quik....but since I am a producer, I am startin to look at everything that goes along with production itself. Aside from the music itself, it has to do with how you make songs come together, your pickiness in working with artists and being hard on them to make them sound their best, your impact and overall catalogue, along with how much your are imitated and how much you pave the way.
If you asked, who is the best musician as a producer, I'd say DJ Quik all day every day, even though Dre can be musical when he chooses to. But I think I started to feel Dre was the best producer overall when I heard NWA Straight outta compton in it's entirety, and I realized that Quik's style when he first came out was HEAVILY influenced by what Dre did on there...everything from the samples, to drums, to how he scratched. Quik does bring the best out of many artists, such as Suga Free and Chingy, but Dre has done it to nearly every artist he has worked with. Quik has more albums and they are all strong, but Dre's two albums still top all of Quik's.
-
Dre brought you "The Chronic" & "Doggystyle"... this is a no brainer. Dr. Dre is best of all-time in
West Coast HIP HOP period!
-
The pb with this thread is that some still confuse producer and beatmaker..... I go with Dre without a doubt

Dr. Dre

- mykestro -
madlib's cool, i've only really heard shades of blue, madvillain and madkap; i never really got hooked on his stuff though.
-
Dr. Dre. No doubt.
DJ Quik and Warren G, at least in my opinion, are undisputed legends by their own right. They've helped to create that branded West Coast sound and at the same time managed to keep their own twist on things. Along with Quik and Warren, a gang of those other dudes have made (and still do) real dope music in their career - classics even. Daz with his gangsta sound, Battlecat with that LBC funk...
But Dre has not only done that, but also become a major, major figure in the rap game. One of the most major figures in the whole history of the game. He's made classic upon classic hits, he's put out new faces in the game, each becoming successes themselves (Snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game)... He's made fans just fiend for new tracks (face it, anytime a new track produced by Dre is released, you know things pop off and it gets a lot of attention). And let's not forget he was there in the very beginning stages of gangsta rap, with N.W.A.
Some think that Dre's stuff hasn't recently been "up to par". That may or may not be (I personally enjoy his other stuff more compared to his most recent offerings too), but nobody on that list has a spotless career record. Were talking best of all time here - how much of Dre's stuff in his 20 years of producing is dope as fuck and how much isn't? The percentage is heavily in favor of the "dope as fuck" category. Others on that list, Quik first hand in my opinion, come close or even neck-to-neck, but none are ahead.
There's a lot of talented, even legendary names on that list. But as far as I see it, Dre is the only true mogul in the game from that list.
Straight Outta Compton, No One Can Do It Better, efil4zaggiN, The Chronic, Doggystyle, 2001.
The success stories that are Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent. And The Game, well on his way.
The hits that many times have become true classics - and not just considering rap, but popular music as a whole - Nuthin' But a G Thang, In Da Club, What's My Name, Still D.R.E., California Love...
Dr. Dre is the best West Coast producer of all time.
-
Dr. Dre is the GREATEST producer and Quik is the BEST...
-
^^^ good input, I get u on that....

^I agree with this entire post except for Dre top two toppin Quik's top 2...I feel Chronic=Safe And Sound, Rhythmalism >>> 2001...other than that...I agree with everything you said. That is how I feel and that's why I feel not only Dre is the greatest west coast producer of all times, but all the greatest in HIPHOP ever. Liike someone else said there is more to producin that beatmakin...if it was who is the greatest west coast beatmaker of all time...I would have choose Quik all day every day. Quik is my fav producer of all times.
-
lol everytime theirs a thread about "who u think is the best producer" its becomes a DJ Quik vs Dr. Dre
the real truth is like I said, Dre is the greatest producer in hip-hop(impact,sales,and actual production not beatmaking) and Quik is the best producer(meaning skills, talent, beatmaking, rapping and overalll as a artist)...
-
if you were talking all-time greatest producer not just from the west, you'd definetely have to mention RZA.
-
if you were talking all-time greatest producer not just from the west, you'd definetely have to mention RZA.
Yeah of course hes the not just the greatest but the best eastcoast producer followed by DJ Priemer
-
I chose Madlib because his style is more unique, it doesnt sound the same all the time, he can switch up his style, he can sample, he can play instruments, he does it all by himself in his house, no big studio needed....he doesnt have a signature sound like dj quik has that guitar in most of his beats but you can tell a madlib beat because of its uniqueness, and jazzyness to it sometimes as well
-
Dr. Dre, ain't no competition. But Battlecat & Daz has always been dope producers too...
-
voted for dre but shouldnt dj muggs or alchemist be on here.
-
voted for dre but shouldnt dj muggs or alchemist be on here.
Muggs should definently be on the list, Al should prolly be on it aswell. but i always forget about Muggs and Al when i think of WC producers just becase their doin "New York" music.
-
muggs def should be mentioned but also should be dj slip and dj u-neek
-
My vote goes for the Quiksta 8)
-
Just so ya'll know, I'm locking this vote a week from it's start date, (to make it offical) so get your votes in. Dre still has the majority vote. 8)
-
DJ Quik
-
No diss to Dre but his beats are more "up-down" type beats,
Yeah, you sound like YOU know what the fuck you're talking about.
Dr. Dre by a landslide.
-

It's easy to say Quik is a better rapper than Dre, since Dre don't write etc... but Dre has a heavy flow that's classic. You hear Dre rap on a song, and it's 1 of a kind, it's coveted. People beg for him to rap on something. DJ Quik is a great rapper and a much better writer, but he doesn't have that heavy fisted clout Dre brings to the microphone every fucking time he opens his mouth. People trip out when Dre says things like "beep out the manuscript" on a little 5 second line in a song. There's rappers who would pay Dre 100 grand or more for a verse that THEY WROTE for him, think about that shit.
-
^thats true that dre has a better deleivery, but quiks flow is better
-
^thats true that dre has a better deleivery, but quiks flow is better
shit, I've NEVER heard a pause or a choppy verse from Quik
pretty much same for Dre, they got their own styles, you definitely know who's who when them 2 are rapping on something 8)
-
Dr. Dre - 54 (61.4%)
DJ Quik - 18 (20.5%)
This can turn out to be a close race, lol.
Must be the 46th time Dubcc does this poll, Dre winning with a overwhelming majority each time, but there still seems to be some diehard Quik fans left who think they can change the general consensus for some reason. :D
-
Quik.
-
Dr. Dre
-
1. Quik
2. Battlecat
-
Dre the motherfucking Doctor
"Dre makes the beats so fun-fun-funky"
-
of all time ??? dre
I love Quik but I go for Dre cause ...take it like this. How many of Quik's productions were smash hits, like platinum hits, worldwide. When Dre comes with a beat he does it big, Dre produce for films...I don't know Quik doin' that... But still Quik is a mad producer don't get me wrong. Trauma was off the chain, but of all times...Still D.R.E
