Farrakhan to hip-hoppers: Know your roles, educate
Fri Feb 15, 1:53 AM ET

By Tamara Conniff

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Artists, music executives, religious leaders and politicians came out in full force Thursday for the Hip-Hop Action Network's West Coast summit to address issues and needs facing the community.

The mini-summit, held at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, is a precursor to the next national summit, set for June. On hand were the event's organizers, Def Jam Records founder Russell Simmons and Benjamin Muhammad, as well as TV and radio personality Steve Harvey, the DOC, DJ Quik, former Washington, D.C., Mayor Marion Barry, Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, among others.

Farrakhan, who delivered the keynote speech, called on hip-hop artists to take responsibility for their roles in society and become teachers of today's youth.

"All the children, they can't read 'Dick and Jane,' but they can recite your raps," Farrakhan said. "They are 3 years old, and they start quoting you. ... Suppose you started teaching children in your raps knowledge that the children need to know (in order) to fight in a racist society?"

Farrakhan encouraged artists to stay away from negative urban images that involve money, drugs, pimps and whores and focus on strength and peace. "Pimpin', all that kind of stuff, keeps you on a level where you can be dealt with," he said. "They arrest whores; they arrest pimps."

Farrakhan also issued a plea to record executives to help bring about change. "Don't have my brothers and sisters singing this crap when you don't accept it yourself," he said.

Knight and Dr. Dre were scheduled to deliver the opening remarks together, but neither arrived on time. Knight, who made his appearance after Farrakhan's speech, addressed such issues as forming a union and providing pension and health care plans to hip-hop artists. He also criticized the role of East Coast rappers, including Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, in the national summit, which one bystander said will fuel the East Coast/West Coast rivalry in the rap world.

During closed-door meetings, attendees discussed such issues as political and economic empowerment, censorship and the success of the Recording Industry Association of America's parental advisory labeling system. The inaugural national Hip-Hop Summit took place in June in New York and was organized by Simmons, Combs, Muhammad, Dave Mays, RIAA chief Hilary Rosen and Jermaine Dupri.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.. Dre too late to speak? That's:

1) Unprofessional
2) Weak
3) Good for him.

here's another story on it

West Coast Hip-Hop Summit Comes Off...
With a Hitch

February 15, 2002

By Gary Jackson
It was a case of "What's wrong with this picture?," Thursday at the swanky Four Seasons Hotel, as the first West Coast Hip-Hop Summit went down. The sky above the hotel was filled with "ghetto birds," and there was enough police manpower in the vicinity to make attendees and hotel guests think they were in South Central rather than Beverly Hills. With Nation of Islam leader the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan receiving top billing on a star-studded dais that included Rush Communications honcho Russell Simmons, KKBT and KPWR L.A. morning men Steve Harvey and Big Boy, hip-hop activists Michael Concepcion and Davey D,  the three-hour Summit was rocked by a verbal exchange between late-arriving Tha Row Records head Suge Knight and his former Death Row Records artist Jewell.

The stated purpose of the one-day summit, which was attended by an estimated 500 of the West Coast's hip-hop music-industry elite, was to lay the groundwork for a larger national summit involving East and West Coast participants (tentatively scheduled for June at a site to be revealed later). The first national Hip-Hop Summit, held last June 14 in New York City, sparked a number of initiatives, including a literacy program sponsored by Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. The undercard of the West Coast Summit was the much-anticipated meeting between producer Dr. Dre and Knight, which failed to come off after Dre pulled a no-show.

In his keynote address, Farrakhan focused on the hip-hop community's need to "accept the responsibility that God has bestowed upon you... You have come up in the worst of times, but it is the best of times... You are the teacher, the second mother and father. You have to accept the responsibility to be something that feeds a mind, not destroys it."

Farrakhan's hour-plus speech was followed by comments from from the dais including Davey D's "Take your street hustle and turn it into a business hustle," and Big Boy's "I will be a channel for [gang rivals] Bloods and Crips, as long as it's positive."

Knight, who was scheduled to deliver the opening remarks, arrived nearly a half-hour after Farrakhan's speech concluded. Flanked by a 40-member entourage that included Mack 10 and Kurupt, Knight began promisingly, after pitching his "Gawtti" clothing line and Tha Row roster, with "We can't get into a cycle where we mess up our dollars," and "If we don't own or control [our music], we'll be out." However, Knight then diverted from his focus with comments on gays and lesbians ("Men wanna be women and women wanna be men."), and East Coast hip-hoppers ("Where's P. Diddy, Puff Daddy or whatever he calls himself nowadays"). Simmons later got up to say that this was a West Coast summit, and that an East Coast summit had already been held.

Things heated up further when Jewell, from the back of the room, entered into a shouting match with Knight, saying cryptically, "I can't sit here and let the devil do his business," thus effectively throwing the room into chaos for several minutes. Knight quickly wrapped up his comments, while Simmons and Muhammad regained control by addressing key issues that will be discussed at the upcoming national Summit. These include political empowerment, the Sarah Jones First Amendment-rights controversy, the creation of political agendas via the formation of political action committees (PACs) and seminars on financial responsibility.

Overall, despite the brief diversion, attendees expressed confidence that the June West Coast Hip-Hop Summit will be positive. Co-organizer Minister Ben Muhammad said after the Summit was over, "If anyone thought that there wouldn't be any drama at a Hip-Hop Summit, then they don't know hip-hop."

Mack 10?  The same Mack 10 that Suge Knight has dissed in a couple of his post-prison interviews?  Interesting.

With tha Row, you never know

It's good to see hip-hop's business leaders and community leaders coming together to do something posotive.  I bet the room was filled with tension, when Suge Knight hit the scene.  I hope they were still able to make some progress, and discuss important issue's.  Peace.

true, especially since Dre has a restraining order against Suge.  Not shocked Dre wasn't there on that day.

You are asking it to a notorious Gangsta who spent half of his life in jail? Oh... what a good example for the black community! If Suge, 2Pac and Tray Deee are your "examples" in life, then woah! Then i understand a lot of things about you (blacks who use to gangbang)..

Use other guys as an example. All you can use as an example from those guys is that (and i'm talking about rappers, not about Suge) they left the ghetto with their own talent. Making legal money. That's all. Then u gotta do the opposite of everything they do in life. For real.

Some of you (expecially white men who doesnt live in a ghetto or in the States. And this is not a diss, since i'm italian and white!) thinks that it's cool to walk in the streetz with a gun. That it's cool to sell drugs. That if you a gangsta then you are a real man. And shit like that. That if you say fuck the police with no reasons it's cool. Like if the police is the devil, and the gun is the God.

Again! Rappers are just rappers.

Suge is a criminal negative example.

90% of the rappers are negative examples.

But they got talent like nobody, so that's why we like em. Personally a lot of times some1 asked me: "u cant relate to em. why u listen to em?".

My reply? Cause they are the bad example. Cause i wanna compare my relaxing peacefully life with their hell life. Cause it's like the opposite. Cause i'm curious to learn more about the black community in the USA. And nothing is better than rap to comunicate. That's the reason.

But it's a shame how i know a lot of guys who takes this shit so serious! FUCK DEATH ROW? FUCK EMINEM? FUCK SUGE? FUCK THIS? FUCK THAT? I HATE THIS? THEY ALL PUNK ASS NIGGAZ? (some1 wrote this!)! I'M A BAD BOY KILLA? etc?

SHIT! It's ok if a rapper who lives this shit says this. But shit!!! I'm reading this from FANS!! Most of em from EUROPE like me!!! And black men see Suge or Tray Deee as examples!!!

It's all wrong here! :(

LIFE FIRST! LOVE FIRST! YOUR GIRL FIRST! YOUR FAMILY FIRST! RESPECT TO EVERY1. Follow those examples, not Suge or rappers.

P.S. This is not directed to you, ..:Madchild:..

They knew Suge was gonna call out everybody and their brother when they invited him!  Why do they act surprised?  Honestly; I woulda liked to see a fistfight between Dre and Suge, because I think dre could take him... Suge's all laid back, and big, but Dre's ALWAYS pissed about something, you can tell when you talk to him... he's got anger problems, I predict he'd hand suge his A$$.

I aint gonna fund Suge, or anything to do with him, hes a nasty person, when you meet a real nasty person in real life you'll understand, believe me. Plus i have no obligation to buy Deathrow records anyway, i dont usually, Pac's dead, Kurupt is the only reason for me to buy a Row record.

I wasnt talking down to you, if it seemed that way it wasnt intentional.

Suge probably does think its all a game, but he disses people so often, its worn thin, i know its all great publicity but everytime he does it we get 2000 posts about it, just pisses me off.

after reading the sonicnet.com article about it, you can add Irv Gotti, Boo-yah Tribe, and Tha Outlawz as members of Suge's entourage.
