I think the Chronic was better, but didnt MTV put Illmatic higher than the Chronic when rating the best rap albums of all time? Not sure... what you guys think?
Vote on the Poll!!!

I like the Chronic a lot more than Illmatic. That's just me though. The Chronic is just like a time machine, it paints a picture of that time period as clear as a canvas. Every time I listen to that album, I feel like I'm back in 1992, back in high school and I recall all that tension due to the riots that had just jumped off. That album truly is a work of art. Very few hip hop albums accomplish that.
In my opinion the Chronic is on another level musically and artistically than Illmatic. Illmatic is great, don't get me wrong, lyrically it was on point. I just feel Chronic more.
-
I would put them both in my top ten.

Illmatic is better lyrically, I don't think too many people would argue that. I think the Chronic is better in every other aspect though.
-
The music sampled on The Chronic > The music sampled on Illmatic
The lyrical content on Illmatic > The lyrical content on The Chronic
-
"The Chronic" was far more influential, "Illmatic" is simply a better album.
-
Damn, its a tough call. Lyrically, you gotta give it to Illmatic. Production I'd give the edge to The Chronic. Both really captured the essence of Cali & New York in that era. But like RBXtra said, Chronic was more influential. Both qualify as absolute must owns for any hip hop fan.
I won't front though, I didn't even hear Illmatic until after IWW was released. I bought the Chronic the week it came out (on tape). I was obsessed with that album. So just because I experienced it when it dropped, and had no preconceived notions at the time, I'd have to go with Chronic overall.
In the last year i've probably listened to Illmatic 10x more than the Chronic though. I'm a flip floppin motherfucker.

Yeah, it's kinda ironic to me that so many younger folks think "Illmatic" was instantly heralded as a hip-hop classic when it was first released. The truth is that the hip-hop community at large pretty much ignored it when it first came out...it took 2 years just to go Gold. I don't think I even listened to "Illmatic" in its entirety until about '98 or '99. "The Chronic", on the other hand, absolutely shook up the industry when it dropped...pretty much the day that album came out, you could feel and hear all of hip-hop changing with it.
-
THE CHRONIC EASY, SO WHAT NAS LYRICS ARE MORE IN DEPTH,THE CHRONIC HAS DOPE BEATS AND COOL LYRICS,MORE SHIT THE STREETS CAN RELATE TO,WHAT HAS AZ BECOME? LOOK WHAT SNOOP AND THE DOG POUND AND NATE DOGG HAS BECOME, IT'S EASY don't get me wrong illmatic is dope as fucc but it ain't better then the chronic when you judge it on all scales, lyrics thats it,the rest goes to the chronic therefore the chronic gets the duke yell
-
chronic
-
i dunno.. chronic has its weak point for me. dont get me wrong its still an amazing album.. but illmatic holds the #1 spot for me. i can listen to that shit on straight repeat for hella days.
-
illmatic not even close
-
this thread is a joke... first of all its on a westcoast board.... secondly Chronic Hands down! it will be bumped way more than illmatic will ever..
-
I prefer The Chronic without a doubt
Illmatic is great lyrically, but the beats are kinda lacking IMO.....Ther overall sound of the album just isn't on the same level as The Chronic IMO

so most people say illmatic was a better album lyrically...are you guys taking account that Snoop had a large impact on the Chronic lyrically, or are you guys only judging the lyrics as Nas vs Dre, instead of Nas vs Dre & Snoop?
-
Chronic, hands muthafuckin down. The chronic was the first album i ever listened to back when i was about 6 years old. I remember my older brother playing the tape and i still remember those famous words "this is dedicated to my niggas that was down since day one...welcome to death row" Lyrically it isn't the same as Illmatic but Snoop on the tracks with his dope lyrics and smooth flow on Dre's beats makes up for the lacking on good lyrical content on the Chronic

Of course. Snoop came correct with his as did Kurupt, RBX, Daz and the Lady of Rage. You can't really put their lyrics on the same level as Illmatic. Illmatic was next level shit.
Rappers I monkey flip 'em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician, inflictin composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine
Holdin a M-16, see with the pen I'm extreme, now
Bulletholes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
Hand me a nine and I'll defeat foes
Y'all know my steelo with or without the airplay
I keep some E&J, sittin bent up in the stairway
Or either on the corner bettin Grants with the celo champs
Laughin at baseheads, tryin to sell some broken amps
G-Packs get off quick, forever niggaz talk shit
Remeniscing about the last time the Task Force flipped
Niggaz be runnin through the block shootin
Time to start the revolution, catch a body head for Houston
I sip the Dom P, watchin Gandhi til I'm charged
Then writin in my book of rhymes, all the words pass the margin
To hold the mic I'm throbbin, mechanical movement
Understandable smooth shit that murderers move wit
The thief's theme, play me at night, they won't act right
The fiend of hip-hop has got me stuck like a crack pipe
The mind activation, react like I'm facin time like
'Pappy' Mason with pens I'm embracin
Wipe the sweat off my dome, spit the phlegm on the streets
Suede Timb's on my feets, makes my cypher, complete
Whether crusin in a Sikh's cab, or Montero Jeep
I can't call it, the beats make me fallin asleep
I keep fallin, but never fallin six feet deep
I'm out for presidents to represent me (Say what?)

I'm one of the few that was never a big Illmatic fan. I respect it's importance in hip-hop and ain't disputing that, but its not a favorite of mine.
The Chronic
-
ive spun chronic 10x more than illmatic and will continue to

The Chronic
i think the same ^^
but illmatic put me too sleep
the chronic, well, is awesome ::)

Yep. The Chronic impacted my life and music tastes more, but over the long-term I feel Illmatic is simply a better, more rounded album. To be honest, when I listen to dre's album today, it sounds kind of old fashioned lol... Illmatic has that 'timeless' feel to it.
-
the chronic, no fucking doubt
-
Chronic definetely.....the whole Deathrow camp were at the very top of their game. Illmatic stil a classic tho, obviously.
-
Both dope albums, but I rarely get the urge to bump Illmatic, even if it "critically acclaimed".
The Chronic on the other hand is constantly on rotation at home or on my Walkman, so for that reason I would go for Chronic.
-
The reason more people bump "The Chronic" is because it's basically a party album; you can turn off your brain and just have fun. "Illmatic" is conscious and intelligent. So the logical conclusion is that the people who prefer "Illmatic" are smarter than the people who prefer "The Chronic".

shit that is a hard one.......to me i only got into Hip-Hop in like 1998 so both these albums only got bought in like 2002......same time actually......
Illmatic
PROS:
the first time i listened to Illmatic i was WHOA!!! not one single song deemed skipable - from Genesis - It Aint Hard 2 Tell.....fuckin classic.....one of the first albums i was able to listen to and not skip anything.....New York Hip-Hop at its finest
CONS:
lets face it no one is going to be "getting down" to illmatic......the album has that same grimey feel throughout
The Chronic
PROS
The Chronic however seemed the more fun album.....songs that u can get down to (G Thnag) and songs with political ideals (they day the niggaz took over) .......it was a thoro album that covered all bases......West Coast Hip-Hop at its finest
CONS
the skits are very skipable (Doctors Office) for that reason you cant really leave this album blarin you'll always have to go back and skip....
To me this question is simply that age old question....East v West whos better???
for me - Illmatic 12 stars out 10, The Chronic 11 out of 10

I use my brain all day at work; damn right I wanna switch it off from time to time and listen to The Chronic.
For me, it ain't like Illmatic is super-complex that you need a metaphysics degree to appreciate it; it's just about being in the mood to listen to it, and that's about once or twice a year.

i can listen to illmatic non stop. Im ashamed to play the chronic now. The whole album is about how they are these super gang bangers. Im growing up and i need something with substance, something the chronic doesnt have.
-
Im growing up and i need something with substance
LOL you should stop listening to Rap music if thats what your looking for.......Im doubting that a Nas album over a decade old now is going to bring subtance to your life in any way........But hey, to each his own man ;)
-
I'd have to go with The Chronic for the simple fact I get more enjoyment out of listening to it than I do with Illmatic.
-
Illmatic is a dope album... BUT!!!! I don't remember any parties bumpin' it as much as The Chronic....
-

because illmatic isnt a party album and wasnt meant to be a party album

a tribe called quest
de la soul
common
masta ace...... all have substance and say something
illmatic has substance b/c it is one of the greatest lyrical showings off all time. The songs talk about the struggle. There are lines you rewind . Thats substance right there. The chronic is one giant album about how gangsta dre is with simple lyrics and hot beats
-
I love illmatic. it holds the number 1 spot for me between these two.

personally i think if you talk about albums which speak of pain and struggle and so forth, Pac's "Me Against the World" is better than illmatic.
-
Yo, im sorry everybody but i should have done this earlier. i didnt know Illmatic would be mentioned this many times as a better album than the chronic. I made a poll, so go vote. but if you are too lazy to, dont trip.
-
They both are classicz but I like The Chronic more, top notch production and a showcase of new West Coast talent this album decided tha fate of West Coast muzik 4 tha yearz that followed upon itz release!
Oh yeah and it was also tha first release of a certain record label...
Illmatic was also dope ofcourse I really liked tha fact that tha album wasn't that long and that every song was tight I alwayz used 2 listen 2 it 2 timez a day but overall I'd go 4 The Chronic...

Me Against the World is #3 on all time albums list.... illmatic is number 1 tho

I can't decide.
I think Doggystyle is better than The Chronic anyway.
Im going to vote for Illmatic.
