Hello.
I've been lurking around here for some time, but never had the intentions of posting anything.
However, I need som information on this.
This wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Row_Records_artists is about current and past artists on Death Row Records.
In the list "Past & Present Enemies of Death Row" Dr. Dre i listed as this:
"Dr. Dre (Is considering buying Death Row records)"
Anyone heard anything about Dre considering buying Death Row? I cant find any information anywhere else.
-
If this was true, it would have been all over the internet.
-
Sounds like BS 2 me.
-
if he was to buy anything, he'd buy his own stuff
snoop would buy his own stuff
a smart person would buy pacs stuff(50 cent lol)
-
i hope it doesn´t happen coz Dre´d be taking several steps if he were to buy the Death Row name back. i do hope that he buys his music catalog back though but why would he want to go back to using the Death Row when he´s already established Aftermath as a household name?

Nostalgic reasons? Payback? Just because he can?

True and I read that article itz all bullshit, "past and present enemies of Death Row" I hate it when people try 2 catagorize shit like that!!

Sounds like BS 2 me.

Yeah I could definitley see him doing that, although he does say he doesn't listen to is old stuff and whatever I could definitely see him wanting ownership of it.
-
I can't imagine Dre buying the company OR the catalogue. Of course owning that catalogue could make anybody a lot of money, but I just don't see Dre being that interested in his past shit to buy it for himself.

well you say that.. but someone posted recently claiming he'd already bought the rights to his work with WCWC..
people have been putting out work by Dre in compilations for years..
-
Dre isn't gonna buy the shit so he can listen to it himself. He's gonna buy it and probably look into releasing some of it. If he doesn't, someone will. I'd say the likelihood that he does that and releases it is about 100 : 1, but it's possible. Imagine if the DR catalogue was released and had numerous unreleased Dre / DPG tracks. I'd pay top dollar.
-
dre said in an interview in BLAZE magazine..that he wanted to buy or help death row records because he didnt want to see something fail and die that he created. the interview was done around 2000
-
dr dre, sitting in his kitchen drinking coffee, scheming on how to piss off suge... smirking to himself, lol

Here's the deal... Dre's a shitty businessman. Now that I've thought about it, I'll bet Dre doesn't buy his own catalog because... he's a shitty businessman. Jimmy Iovine would buy the stuff way before Dre. Hell, Eminem or 50 cent would probably buy Dre's catalog before Dre would.
Look @ Dre's history with business. Gets fucked over by Jerry Heller in NWA. Starts a business with a known ass-hole like Suge Knight. Lets Suge take control of everything, then walks away from the empire empty handed without even his masters, OR ample compensation for his half of the company (Didn't he quit with like a house, and a car? He mentioned it in an interview... one car, one house with a studio, he walked away, Suge laughed). Every business move Dre makes, Jimmy Iovine looms over.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing... Dre is certainly extremely rich and if he's not good with business deals, he should stay away from them. I'm just thinking Dre won't buy DR on his own, although Iovine or someone may goad him into it.
-
Suge would probably sodomize Dre if he attempted that deal.
-
Apparently, there is no real source for Dre wanting to buy Death Row.
However, the main wikipedia article about Death Row Records has this to say:
On April 3, 2006, it was reported that a court-appointed receiver is set to acquire Death Row assets to auction off. Suge Knight has missed several court-mandated appearances over his assets. Michael Harris, an imprisoned drug dealer, says that Knight owes him money because he helped fund the label's founding.
On April 4, 2006, Death Row Records filed for bankruptcy protection. Knight will run the company while the matter is before the courts.
Using these articles as sources: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4878224.stm http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002276110
I'm not to familiar with things like this, but wouldn't it mean that if anyone was interested in buying Death Row, they may be allowed to?
If so, I can see Dre wanting at least his masters and unrealeased stuff back.
But then again, I don't know too much about how these things works.
-
buy death row for what? so he can release unreleased fucced up wacc dogg pound studio gangsta music? nobody even bought DPG's 2002 album. a smart businessman would let Death Row be cuz in order to buy death row youre gonna have to pay all of they debts. Youre basically buying debts.

dre said in an interview in BLAZE magazine..that he wanted to buy or help death row records because he didnt want to see something fail and die that he created. the interview was done around 2000
He also said this in The Source in 1999...

Hello.
I've been lurking around here for some time, but never had the intentions of posting anything.
Go back to lurking on the forums bastard :psych:
-
dre is a bad business man but he was never poor,
check his VH1 behind the music interview
in high skool he used to buy clothes to wear em once only....
he definately a heavy spender, but ever since his NWA he was never poor
he left ruthless with a million dollers in his account
and obviously left deathrow with much more than 1 mill... he left 50% of the company shares and his masters but that doesnt mean he had nuthin in the bank or other businesses
-
that would be tite if dre got the rights to all the recorded material from death row.
image the classics that are still locked up in the vault :o

I don't think there are many unreleased Dre trackz/productionz left in tha Death Row vault and if ur referrin' 2 all tha other stuff what would he wanna do wit a Top Dogg or Crooked I album?
-
I really don't see any unreleased songs or catalogs being included in the auction. I mean, those masters could be anywhere. What if Suge took them a while ago and they're hidden somewhere....nobody knows exactly how many tracks are left there so if they buy Death Row how do they know if they're missing a few 100 masters?
-
''....who's the man with the master plan..'' certainly not mister André Young as far as the business is concerned but u know i think it's aight to buy the catalog it's coo', plus, he could trace a new road for everybody in the current roaster(is there somebody alive in it lolol) artistically speaking....probably
-
He would never buy Death Row.
Like a previous poster said Dr. Dre would just buy the masters to Chronic and all his unreleased music back.
-
Even though wikipedia is a well known source, it is not exactly accurate. Almost all articles on the site are typed up and submitted by random users on the net. Notice how you can edit almost any article? Most likely someone thought they heard something somewhere about dre buying death row and thought it would be cool to type up.
-
I don't understand why Dre wouldn't want his catalogue...If I was a rapper I know I would like to own the music I made
-
That Would Be DOPE if they worked it out

Let's just say that somebody does buy the whole catalog and owns Dre's songs, both released and unreleased. Can that person then release the unreleased songs, or is that court ruling that Dre received in effect for whoever owns the music? I figured the court ruling would only prevent Suge from releasing any new material from Dre.
-
Somebody mentioned Dre buying it and releasing some unreleased stuff. In case you didn't notice, Dre doesn't think a beat's worth hearing if it's more than a month or so old. The motherfucker don't even do concerts hardly or put out greatest hits albums. There will never be an old dre production released if he has anything to do with it. We're lucky we've heard a few unreleased beats from years ago from people like the DOC who basically just strongarmed Dre as friends into letting them use some old beats. He's probably got 1000 beats he never let anybody hear.
Anybody remember that story where Dre said that Suge and his boys showed up at Dre's mansion with baseball bats and said they were there for the masters, and Dre just told them to take 'em and leave?

I haven't, but I'd like to read it though. Do you have a link?

no holmes I believe that quote came from snoops mouth and was something along the lines of ..." me and dre had spoken about looking into helping deathrow get back on there feet because theyd hate to see something I helped build fall but suges always so negative..."
not word for word but im sure that sums it up...Id like to believe its true but you know snoops liable to say all kinds of shit if hes smoking during the interview....

No... I don't even remember where it's from, but it might be that source from when he had just left DeathRow. Somebody will know what I'm talking about. Dre said Suge showed up when all that was going down with a bunch of punks and told Dre "We're here for the masters" and Dre just gave all of them to them. He was bragging about it, something about how he'd just make more and didn't care about the old shit.
