LOL @ USA being in front of Portugal, Spain, France, Argentina, England, Italy, Sweden, Germany.. :D

The way the rankings are worked out are stupid as USA and Mexico are always really high for some reason. Egypt are in the top 20 because of their African Nations Cup win.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings#Overview
The following is an overview of the system used to calculate the rankings.
The FIFA World Ranking is a ranking of all of the senior national teams of all FIFA member associations, and all international matches are counted in the scoring, however depending on their importance, are differently weighted. Also separate rankings are used for junior teams or other representative national sides (such as the women's national team) are not included in the calculation, and mostly there are separate rankings for these, for example the FIFA Women's World Rankings.
When the calculations are made the following factors are taken into consideration:
* World Cup finals matches
* World Cup preliminary matches
* FIFA Confederations Cup matches
* Continental championships final matches
* Continental championship preliminary matches
* Friendly matches
The rankings are produced by a computer program which follows specific criteria on assigning the teams points. The calculations are clearly defined and taken into consideration there are specific factors, they are as follows:
* Winning, drawing and losing
* Number of goals
* Home or away match
* Importance of the match (multiplication factor)
* Regional strength (multiplication factor)
Note: The system does not take into account margin of victory or loss
Each year the seven best results for each team are the only results given full weighting and progressively less weighting is given to past results year by year until after eight years they are dropped completely. Through this system of diminishing value of past results, the rankings are designed to give a more accurate depiction of current form, than past resultsd.
At the end of each season two awards are given;
* Team of the Year goes to the team that scores the overall highest average number of points during the year over the seven matches of the year which are given full weighting.
* Best Mover of the year Is awarded to the team which is deemed to have made the best progress in the rankings, over the course of the previous year. However, this is not simply the team which has risen the most places, taken into account is the fact that it becomes progressively harder to score points the higher in the rankings a team is.

it is so inaccurate it's not even true. where are ukraine? finished top of their qualifying group.
and i'm sorry but the czech republic are not the 2nd best team in the world, lol.
it is not updated enough.
look at france, yeh they once things 6 years ago - they sit 7th in the world rankings bearing in mind they won 5 games out of 10 (scoring just 14 goals in the process) in qualifying in a group with:
Switzerland
Israel
Ireland
Cyprus
Faroe Islands
that list is nonsense
-
i only know the netherlands are so high cuz they didnt lose any match in the qualifications,
and besides the netherlands have high-quality players, only a lil bit too young, wait some years and theyre gonna win a big tournament 8)

What is this system good for when friendly matches count for the ranking?

they should count for something i.m.o.

I think it's impossible to to use a sort of system to rank soccer teams. We know who are the elite teams because we know how good the players are in those teams but this can't be backed up by facts. Let's take a lot at Mexico, IMO they're a top ten team (8-10) and I know some of you guys in here would even disagree with that. Besides how they perform in tournaments, how can we rank these teams? Impossible. I mean take a look at what they use to rank them...
* Winning, drawing and losing
* Number of goals
* Home or away match
* Importance of the match (multiplication factor)
* Regional strength (multiplication factor)
That's as detailed you can possibly get in soccer. Mexico got a high ranking because they play way too many friendlies plus they gave a hell of a performance in the Confederations Cup. They were the team that gave up the least number of goals, and they played the most matches possible too. Also, for the last 3 major tournaments mexico has qualified as Number 1 in each group. I don't know lol, it's just weird i guess.
