Title: Dr. Dre Ghostwritten.. Examples?
Post by: dj_qquuiikk on June 01, 2006, 10:55:49 AM
So after reading this forum for a long a$$ time, i decided to post for once..
anyways, i want some examples of hits that dre has come out with that he was for sure ghostwritten for..

an obvious one to kick it off..

Still DRE -> Jay Z.
Ghetto Fabualous -> Ras Kass.

btw. i want to point out. that regardless of the fact that he has other people creditted for writing lyrics if its not a guest spot he still comes up with the concepts. "i wanna say this, and this..." etc.. ya get me?

I think  a lot of songs on cronic 2001 were written by eminem. I find that espcialy the Watcher you can tell Eminem wrote it.

I thought Jay Z wrote The Watcher. I am almost positive he did. Jay wrote still DRE. That has Jay's style written all over that. Check out Watcher 2 when Jay raps you could picture him rapping the 1st one.

i dont think there;s any proof except for the rare occasions when these artists are credited; but its still a fact Dre doesnt write most his own shit

Kurupt has written for him before, and I think Knoc and Bad Azz did too on 2001. Bad Azz has pictures in the 2001 insert sittin behind the boards with Dre, so my guess is he wrote a verse or 2 for that album.

Jay-Z was credited for Still D.R.E and Eminem for The Watcher... it doesn't say "Written by..." but they got their publishing on there...

bad azz kurupt and hittman are all credited for that song.

i think the most obvious verse dre has rapped being someone elses lyrics is his verse on here we go again.........soooooo easy to tell its games writing on that.

He doesnt use ghostwritters...

yeah good point. technically you're right. because he's not hiding the fact.

various rappers over the years have claimed to write tracks for other people..

e.g. pacewon for the fugees..

I know that Ice Cube & D.O.C. wrote most of Dre's shit in the early Ruthless days...on "Efil4zaggin", D.O.C. wrote for Dre and sometimes Dre wrote his own material as well. Then during the Death Row era, it varied. Snoop handled "Deep Cover" and the majority of The Chronic album, with D.O.C. still writing for Dre.

J. Flexx co-wrote "Keep Their Heads Ringin", Ice Cube co-wrote "Natural Born Killaz", and I'm sure J. Flexx had some writing in Dre's verse for "California Love". I've heard of King T ghostwriting for Dre, as well as several unknown artists in the early Aftermath era. Here's a list of the writers for Dre's discography from '99 til now....

Eminem
Guilty Conscience
Bad Guys Always Die
Forgot About Dre
The Watcher
Bang Bang
Let's Get High
What's The Difference ( co-wrote )
Bitch Please II
Hello
Say What You Say
Shit Hits The Fan
Encore

Kurupt
Chin Check
Ask Yourself A Question

Hittman
Just Dippin
Bitch Niggaz
The Next Episode
Fuck You
Light Speed
Blaaw!
Not Many Dayz Left

Knoc-Turn'al
Put It On Me
Bad Intentions
The Wash
Symphony In X Major
The Knoc
Your Wife
Fast Lane Remix
Crooked Cops

The D.O.C.
Housewife
Big Ego's ( co-wrote )

Punch aka Yykkes aka R. Bembry
Big Ego's + What's The Difference ( co-wrote )

The Game
Where I'm From OG
Here We Go

Xzibit
U Know

Jay-Z
Still D.R.E.
Watch Me

Rakim
The Watcher II

Royce Da 5'9
Xxplosive OG aka The Way I Be Pimpin'
The Message
The Throne Is Mine ( Royce performed it as a demo )

Snoop and D.O.C. wrote alot for Dre on the Chronic after that Snoop did not write as much for Dre. I remember Snoop was saying that he was surprised that Eminem wrote for Dre. Under estimated Eminem as a song writer at first

he gets written for but they're not "ghostwriters," they get paid their fair share of publishing and all that.

I heard that RBX helped with the lyrics on The Chronic, especially "Let Me Ride".

'Let them ride, cause I wrote that for Dre..' (RBX- 'Out wit da Old', 'No Mercy,No Remorse')

RBX definately did write for Dre on The Chronic, and I'm sure Rage, Kurupt and Daz did too.

lol, theres a vid of him wearing a toga somewhere on dubcc ::) anyways....

yeah i agree, ghostwriting, or even what dre does, is pretty lame... hes either really horrible at writing songs, or hes just lazy as hell :-\

heres all of the writers on The Chronic, straight from the sleeve...

the chronic intro - snoop, dre, colin wolfe
fuck wit dre day - dre, snoop, colin wolfe
let me ride - rbx, snoop
day the niggaz took over - dre, rbx, snoop, daz
nuthin but a g thang - snoop
deeez nuuuts - dre, daz, snoop, colin wolfe, nate
lil ghetto boy - snoop, doc
nigga witta gun - doc, snoop
rat tat tat tat - dre, snoop
$20 sack pyramid - dox, snoop, dre
lyrical gangbang - kurupt, rbx, rage, snoop, dre, doc
high powered - dre, rbx, colin wolfe
doctors office - dre, kevin lewis, jewell, rage
stranded on death row - kurupt, rbx, rage, snoop
the roach outro - rbx, rage, daz
bitches aint shit - dre, colin wolfe, snoop, doc, kurupt, daz

of course, this is just the book... alot of dre's credits were probably just given to him to make him look good

these writing credits also include the musical side of the song... Dre get credit for the beat, Colin Wolfe get credit for the bass-line etc.

didnt know that.. cuz nowadays its only writers of the song, just figured it would be the same

^ even today its not "always" the same.. there is no standard.

the same also applies for samples used.

they dont _have_ to credit anything in the booklets legally in any way shape or form _unless_ it was part of a contracted agreement etc.. for example with a sample that its ok to use as long as the sample credit is used. this is why not all samples are creditted.. not because people are trying to hide that its a sample.

so its not a legally binding thing.. many mistakes are made in album sleeves..

and "ghostwriting" really ISNT what dre does.. because its not a secret. just likehow in the 60s many songs recorded by dylan were recorded using "pop formulas" and sold massiively..  .e.g. Peter, Paul & Mary - Blowin in the wind, The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man and many many more.. you'd be amazed how many.. this wasn't an uncommon thing back then, but is now - sort of..

once you start to look outside rap you realise that EVERYTHING even the 'licks' that rap borrows from rock etc are more often than not borrowed from older songs.. its a rock tradition to update older songs.

Dre never claimed to be a lyricist. He came into the game as a DJ for World Class Wrecking Cru. If Dre was bragging about how he's the nicest emcee and it turned out he was ghostwritten, that would suck. Also, it's not like it's a big secret that Dre uses ghostwriters, he even credits them most of the time and has admitted it himself. I don't think he's even really ever claimed to be an emcee.

Now if someone like Nas uses ghostwriters, that's completely different, since Nas does claim to be a real lyricist/emcee.
