Ghana's stars are Essien, former Juventus player Appiah and Udinese player Muntari.

Anyway this is my prediction:

1. ITALY
2. Czech Rep.
3. U.S.A.
4. Ghana

Drogba is with Ivory Coast no?

Yep.

but Ghana have a very strong side.

Sulley Muntari of Udinese is a very strong midfield player, and don't forget ex-Parma and Juventus central midfielder Stephan Appiah.
that's a very competitive midfield when you add Michael Essien to the mixer, and Samuel Kuffour at central defence.

BEST STARTING 11 WITH PLAYERS FROM THIS GROUP, IMO.

Cech
Zambrotta, Ujfalusi, Cannavaro, Jankulovski
Camoranesi, Essien, Totti, Nedved
Rosicky, Toni

Yeah, he'll probably miss the 1st one, but it's not sure yet. One between Zaccardo (probably) and Oddo will replace him.
Oh, and Totti will probably miss the 1st one too, since he's totally out of condition.

^ no man this year the Azzurri have a whole different mind frame. Watch them play a more balanced soccer and make good use of their Tottis, Cassanos, and Del Pieros rather than having a defence first attitude to every match
Title: Re: The Official Group E Thread
Post by: Antonio_ on June 06, 2006, 12:04:43 AM
True that, but in Italy it's going on the greatest scandal in recent football history, and the team is distracted by those events. Lippi is a very good manager and in the pre-tournament friendlies they've done good things (they scored 3 times in Holland and 4 times in Germany, against elite teams), but Totti is totally out of condition (he's coming from an injury) and he's the key player. I don't know. We can advance easy or we can implode and collapse because of psicological reasons.

Anyway watch out for Pavel Nedved, man. He's ready for the competition, and he'll probably retire if Juventus will go to Serie B, so this one will be his last opportunity to do well in an international competition. I expect him to be on the Top11 of the whole competition, man. He's a true warrior.
Title: Re: The Official Group E Thread

Anyway Italy's team will have a lot of injured/out of condition players: Del Piero, Totti, Gattuso, Nesta and Zambrotta are all out for at least a game. 5 starters.

Well I think its more 4 starters, cause Del Piero wouldn't play unless Totti wasn't anyway.

I expect Italy and Czech Republic to get through this group. USA fluked their way to the Semis last time, but will have no such luck this time around me thinks.

This is the formation Lippi will 99.9% use tonight.

Buffon
Zaccardo, Nesta, Cannavaro, Grosso
Perrotta, Pirlo, De Rossi
Totti
Gilardino, Toni

Camoranesi and Del Piero benched, Gattuso and Zambrotta injured.

I like it. I'm positive. 2-0 win for Italy.

Dissapointing from the Americans, McBride got no service at all.

Tomas Rosicky- best solo-performance of the tournament so far imo.
2 piledrivers from range, (unfortunate on the second), and great close control before confidentally finishing the Czech's 3rd.

Slightly worrying for the Italians now, with the Czech's holding a +3 GD, nobody wants to finish 2nd in this group.

Czechs performed like I expected. Quality side, I thought they were gonna win the Euro's 2 years back and I think they;ll go far this time too. Koller;s injury is a blow but Baros should be fit in time for the 2nd game if not the 3rd. Rosicky & Nedved ran the show.

I think they are using the stupid record against the team you are level with thing rather than goal difference to decide the group placings. They did at the Euros and in qualifying.

Yep, they will.

Should things go as expected, and the Czech's beat Ghana.. and Italy beat USA & Ghana, then there's a good possibility Italy-Czech's could tie, meaning Italy need to rack up some goals in the next two fixtures..

:), a confident 2-0 win from Italy.

Gilardino should of scored, but the keeper stopped with his legs, maybe Lippi will start Iaquinta over him against the USA now..
even though the game was haulted for offside, daamn Sami Kuffour was at least 2 foot away from the ball when he snapped Iaquinta lol.

Maybe next time Lippi should start with Camoranesi over Perrotta if he keeps the 4-3-1-2, unless he switches to a 4-4-2 if Totti isn't fit, and he can use Camoranesi on the right-flank.
Italy need his crosses for the heads of Toni, Gilardino/Iaquinta imo.

Real brave effort from Ghana, they were strong in the opening 30 minutes, but they lacked the killer instinct infront of goal.
Asamoah is fast and lively, but I don't think they have that "goalscorer" in their side to advance from their group.
Anyways, I hope they can spring a draw against the Czech's!

Still confident Italy can go all the way in this tournament.

Interesting.

So the situation before the next Italy vs USA match is..

IN - Italy 3 pts (1)
IN - Ghana 3 pts (2)

OUT - Czech Rep. 3 pts (2)
OUT - USA 0 pts (1)

Italy can go to 6 points tonight to lead the group.

What is the rule? When two teams got the same points do they consider the match between each others or the number of goals scored/allowed.

It's interesting cause if they consider the match between Ghana and the Czech Rep. at the moment Italy and Ghana (3pts vs Czech Rep.) are in and Czech Rep. is out, while if they do consider the difference of goals scored/allowed it's Italy (+2) and Czech Rep. (+1) in and Ghana (=) out.

The other night they said its on goal difference before games vs,

so should Czech finish with a higher goal difference, on the same points as Ghana, then I understand the Czech's qualify..
that's going on what a commentator said the other night.

Italy never changed their mentality after going a man down, even when they had the advantage, I'm not so sure it'd been the same if the Czech's woulda slipped up earlier.

Zaccardo shouldn't of started for Italy imo, Grosso should of remained at left-back, and Zambro at right-back, I guess Lippi learnt his lesson.
& De Rossi, why?

the ref, his linesman were horrible, so many bad calls during play, (not talkin bout the cards).

Positives Italy still lead the group, and they can hold the Czech's to at least a draw, and still have the upper hand for top spot.

Ghana fucked up sick by not scoring on that penalty or that 3 to the GK chance near the end of the game.  Goal difference might decide who advances

I don't know, I am pretty sure Italy will top the table, regardless of the Ghana-USA tie.

America deserve their props, they knew they couldn't lose, and they got the job done. There was only 1 side who wanted to win tonights match, very dissapointing.

At least Gila got a good to his name now.

Czech can tie Italy though, that will leave Czech with 4 pts and still plus 1 in goal differnce and if Ghana and US ties that leaves Ghana at 4 Pts with 0 goal difference leaving them out.  A single extral goal in that Ghana-Czech could have changed things for them.

oh definitely.
Gyan should never of took the kick before the ref whistled.. if anything he got punked by it, and not Cech.

I s'pose this leaves an interesting last day in this group, but I feel Italy wasted a huge chance to have things wrapped up tonght.

I think because the other American forward was in the line of vision for Gianluigi Buffon.. so it could be considered being active..
I only see it the once, so I can't really comment.

Word, finally a group where the last group stage games will be intense.  Groups A and C are decided already, and although groups B and D still don't have that 2nd placed team...the odds are still for Sweden and Mexico to advance but in Group E it can really get crazy.

Certainly, for me it's had everything this group.

Czech's will be very under-strengthed to face Italy aswell.
Ujfalusi is probably their strongest defender, and he plays in the same team with Luca Toni, and he's suspended.

& they should be without all three strikers- Koller, Baros and Lovenc.

Damn what a fucked up match! We scored a wonderful goal, but we ruined everything first with the most embarassing own goal of the WC history, then with one of the most moronic red card EVER by a dumb player like De Rossi (fuck the media riding his dick. Fuck AS Roma). Damn. Anyway it was a very phisical match, with 3 players sent off. We had most chances to win, but we didn't. It's a tie, disappointing. But we still lead the group.

Italy 4
Ghana 3
Czech Rep. 3
USA 1

The next one will be decisive.
