word, its a shame that rap has gone so commercial. Look how many people back in tha day had an actually message in there songs now look at it
-
It's been dead and buried ever since dre said it was back in 96 or whenever.
Everyonce in a while, somebody resurrects it, but it's nothing compared to what it used to be. So far, the only eternal rap is the Knowledge rap, like de la soul brings.
-
how I see it is, back then when you came out, and there weren't many rappers, it was all about talent, now its just who can look the most commercial and sell the most
nothing will really compare to the old school rap
-
I think Gangsta Rap is dead, at least in the mainstream. Dre and Snoop don't do it anymore like they use to back in the early to mid 90s. Now they just do West coast rap, and aren't as explicit as they use to be. There still is Gangsta Rap, but it is mainly underground like some of that X-Raided stuff. Crooked I and the new artists at Tha Row are gansta rappers. But, nowadays, everyone is now rhyming like Dre and Snoop did. It's stupid.

This about sums it up. G-Rap aint dead. Theres just too many booty ass artists takin up rack space at The Warehouse.
Cleaning up is a great way to put it.

well see with da death of pac and BIG..gangsta rap met itz end..so i though i'd say coz he died later than pac..thatz all..
-
naww i don'T think it's because of their death , cause after pac die , the west was still hot , and when the beatle broke up or retired, their music was still tight. so it's another event that got the west down, maybe the arrival of jay-z pops shit , that pin the west down , 1...2...3 fo long time now

The deaths of 2Pac and Biggie had a MASSIVE blow on the survival of gangsta rap......And it hasnt yet recovered. There are still hardcore creative artists putting it down, such as Outkast and Wu. And Nas just released the best street album [and best album PERIOD] in years. But there is still a long way to go before hardcore hip hop reaches full strength again. As long as there are artists like Ja Rule, Jay Z, Lil Romeo, Lil Dickface, Wackalous, Jermaine Doo Doo Pee, etc etc, hardcore hip hop will not see its peak again.

Fuck that, you think you can get away with that just because you said it in the middle of your speech?
::) ::)

gangsta rap is daed commercially. people are tired of the same old shit from these "gangsta rap" artists. it just needs some fresh faces out there instead of a few artists who will only allow people on their label to shine, but hold them back so the rookies don't eclipse them. It's a shame that the west can't make a full comeback because the media only recognizes the West Coast Monopoly (Dre, Cube, Snoop, Xzibit, Nate Dogg) and chooses to ignore the up and coming talent (Crooked I, Eastwood, Spider Loc, Knoc-Turnal, E-White, etc.) and those who've been putting out tight shit for years, but don't get any recognition (Quik, WC, Jayo Felony, C-Bo, X-Raided, etc.).

Actually, I know for a mothafuckin fact that it IS a classic, and the best hip hop album to come out since Aquemini....

ha ha i knew this , so u telling that people stop listening them fake gansta shit to listen to them fake bling bling and mags shit , c'mon that ain'T the reason. if it's the reason , people are so dumd , changin fo the worst ::)

C'mon, people only say it's a classic so that Jigga don't get an advantage. Is these really classics?:
Smokin'
One Mic
The Flyest
Braveheart Party
Rule
My Country
What Goes Around
Every Ghetto (OK, good but not classic)
Now we're left with 7, and they aint all got the same replay-value. I aint sayin Blueprint is a classic neither, mind you, but it's closer than Stillmatic.

Each to his own I guess. Personally, I think Stillmatic is far better than Blueprint, though the Blueprint is probably Jay's second best album.
Smokin--near classic
One Mic--CLASSIC, one of Nas's best songs ever to date
The Flyest--near classic, though the chorus is annoying at times
Braveheart Party--only wack song on Stillmatic
Rule--classic, perfect balance between mainstream and underground
My Country--near classic, the hook coulda been better though
What Goes Around aka Poison--EASILY classic, this shit is just sick as fuck.
I dont recall a song in recent times dropping as much knowledge as this song.
Every Ghetto--CLASSIC!! Both of Nas's verses are sick as fuck [especially his last verse].
The Intro, Got Yaself A Gun, Rewind [this is rediclously ill], 2nd Childhood, Your Da Man, and Destroy & Rebuild are all classic or near classic as well........and Ether is probably the best diss song in at least 2 years.....
Personally, I think Stillmatic is a classic, regardless of the status of Blueprint. How many hip hop albums have come out recently that came from the heart like Stillmatic has? Very few. Nas took it back as close to Illmatic as he could, and I see Stillmatic as becoming a very revolutionary album of the new millineum. Definatly a classic in my eyes.
Its becoming one of my fav albums EVER, along with such titles as E.1999 Eternal, All Eyez On Me, Liquid Swords, ATLiens, Doggystyle, Me Against The World, Illmatic, 36 Chambers, The Predator, Moment Of Truth, and Ready To Die........for me to like Stillmatic almost as much as those albums is a big complement, cuz I rarely compare any albums to those I mentioned above.
-
Yeah, each to it's own, and I can see why you like many of the ones I didn't like. It's just that if I don't like the beat, that's ruining very much of the lyrics to me, they gotta match, knahmasayin? And if Nas doesn't sound REAL to me on a track, it can also ruin' a whole lot, same problem with Jigga & Prodigy. When Nas talk highly about buzzin' guns and smacking street-catz, he gotta sound like he was able to do it. Like you really meant it, like M.O.P. or Noreaga for example. Dr.Dre might say it too, but everybody knows that he aint no drugdeala or gunbuster, so it's obvious, but when Nas or Jigga talk like it was true, they lose a whole lot of cred. to me, it can ruin' pretty much. Outcome: Nas sounds real "gay" in songs or interviews when he's pullin' "gangstas do gangsta-shit, still laughin' to the bank...."-shit.
-
^^^Aw, you are a beats man, thats why you dont like Stillmatic.....im more of a lyrics type man, but I still like tight beats. Thats why I LOVE the Liquid Swords album. RZA dropped ILL production on that album, and everyone knows that is one of the best lyrical albums ever. Stillmatic didnt have the best production, but it was solid and fit Nas's lyrics nicely. Nas definatly has his street credibility though. Remember, he wrote Illmatic while lookin out the windows of the Queensbridge PJ's.......He's definatly put in work. Stillmatic should set an example for albums to come though, cuz Nas put it down lyrically, and good lyrics seem to be a rarity in hip hop these days.
-
Hm :) I like to see myself as a beats+lyrics man, as if one of them is crap, I dont figure it's a classic. A good example is "Ghetto" with J.D. feat. RL. It's a bangin beat with Dr.Dre on the boards, but it's 95% R'n'B, and therefore I cant listen to it more than 10 times and it'll get boring. But if Dre put Xzibit, Nas, Method Man, Jigga or another good lyricist on it instead of RL & J.D., it might get played for months on my stereo. Likewise, if I think a beat is wack, and the lyrics ever-so-fantastic, it will quick get boring, as I might find good lyrics on a freestyle-forum for that sake. So you gotta have both to impress me lol ;D

food for thought:
Rap Is Dead-
The hip hop side of me has been in a sight state of dormancy/
i once was inspired by most of the rap game performing weak/
horribly/,but i've been humbled by walking down perceptive doorways/
i've stopped purchasing records that're only okay/
so when i wanna write confidently better/
i listen to most of post 1995 rap efforts/
gangsta rap is dead,i'm just quoting Dre said it/
but even he had to backtrack when interscopes sales were upsetted/
rap wise i'm tired and i'm running out of energy/
i suppose my past works will have to be how hip-hoppers remember me/-Tanjint

face it....apart from the old albumz sellin'....and the old gangsta artists comin back and sellin'......as much a fan i am i hate to say....that the gangsta rap era is DEAD.....it went ages ago....
-
One Mic--CLASSIC, one of Nas's best songs ever to date
yea it makes sence......espesially if tha bigest mass of dicent nas trackz came from tha classic illmatic and hiz latest "stillmatic" (ILLMATIC WAZ 9 trackz long...so if you look objectively tha dude didnt have much)....most of tha trackz on tha rest of hiz albumz waz straight BS.....except for a coupla exeptionz....
-
mayn u trippin, that stillmtic is classic...dont forget there is no such thing as a perfect album
