Title: Celtics acquire Blazers' Telfair
Post by: Stone Cold is Bout It, Bout It on June 28, 2006, 03:07:34 PM
NEW YORK -- The Boston Celtics acquired second-year Portland Trail Blazers point guard Sebastian Telfair for the No. 7 pick in Wednesday's NBA draft, as well as one or two other players, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

The trade was agreed upon Wednesday afternoon but it came after the 2 p.m. ET deadline which means the Celtics will still be on the clock, selecting for the Blazers, when the No. 7 pick comes up during the draft.

Portland will pick at No. 4 and No. 7, barring any more trades.

One of the players from the Celtics could be injured point Dan Dickau (Achilles), but that wasn't confirmed as of Wednesday.

Boston has been searching for a true point guard and wasn't overwhelmed by the choices that it may have at No. 7. The Celtics worked out Connecticut's Marcus Williams, Kentucky's Rajon Rondo and Villanova's Randy Foye on Monday. All three could be available at No. 7. But the Celtics brass decided that Telfair, two years into the league, was better suited for the Celtics' system at this juncture in his career.

Danny Ainge, the director of basketball operations, looked at Telfair's first eight games -- 12.6 points, shooting 45.7 percent, 42.3 percent on 3s as well as four assists a game -- as the indicator of his ability. Telfair hurt his thumb after that and was out for an extended period of time. He lost the starting point guard position during his absence to Steve Blake and Jarrett Jack. He finished averaging 9.5 points, 3.6 assists and shot 39.4 percent in 68 games. Telfair was the No. 13 pick for the Blazers in 2004 out of Lincoln High in New York.

In his two years he averaged a combined 8.1 points, 3.5 assists and shot 39.4 percent.

This deal allows the Celtics to play Delonte West more as an off guard with Telfair as a natural point.

This trade won't deter the Celtics from still pursuing Philadelphia's Allen Iverson in a summer deal that is still very much alive with a third team still to be determined.

I thought Delonte West was fine at point guard...And Dan Dickau was decent as well...Telfair has upside though, Boston is definitely making moves to improve...

PG Sebastian Telfair...Delonte West/Dan Dickau
SG Paul Pierce...Tony Allen/Orien Greene
SF Wally Sczcerbiak...Gerald Green/Ryan Gomes
PF Al Jefferson...Raef Lafrentz/Brian Scalbrine
C Kendrick Perkins...Michael Olowakandi/1st Round Pick?

Coach: Doc Rivers

That definitely looks like a young team on an uprise...

I think Portland might trade the #4 and #7 picks, or one pick and a player to the Raptors.....

Didn't know that Boston sent out Dickau, Lafrentz, AND a pick...I think that's a little too much...However, their roster is still looking nice:

PG Sebastian Telfair...Delonte West/Orien Greene
SG Paul Pierce...Gerald Green/Tony Allen
SF Wally Sczcerbiak..Ryan Gomes/Draft Pick
PF Al Jefferson...Theo Ratliff/Brian Scalbrine
C Kendrick Perkins...Michael Olowakandi/Dwayane Jones

Why would they get AI? They just acquired Sebastian Telfair... that would make no sense unless they plan on using him in a trade...PeACe

The biggets rumor in Atlanta right now is that theyre shipping out Al Harrington, possibly to the Lakers for Chris Mihm + Jordan Farmar, which I wouldn't really like...PeACe

It has nothing to do with that, it's about me believe that Jordan Farmar has an extremely bright future in a Lakers jersey...Al Harrington is way too much of a tweener to fit in with the Lakers...PeACe

I rather see Lamar, Al & Kobe playing at the same time then..Lamar, Luke, & Kobe @ the same time...Plus, i want to win right now, i don't want to wait 3 years for Jordan to get good, the same goes with Bynum & Turriaf..but i got a feeling those two will contribute next season.

If this shit is real, Mitch should do it.

Dude...That trade would make our front-court even thinner than it already is. Harrington is also not a true power forward, we'd basically be trading a serviceable big and a 1st round prospect (considered a steal at #26) for a power forward who plays small...That's not what we need right now. I don't wanna send Farmar packing in a trade that won't really solve much, he has potential to be great and it's not worth risking...PeACe

LOL. Our only 2 true bigs (center and power forward) would be Kwame and Bynum! It looks good on paper, but I highly doubt a team like that would work...I rather get me a real power forward, like a Chris Wilcox or a Melvin Ely, and it would come at a much cheaper price than an Al Harrington...PeACe

Well I think Wilcox would be great for u guys to.  I also hope we keep fred jones and jeff foster but if I were the Lakers I would try and trade for Foster and sign a Fred Jones or Kareem Rush along with Cassell.  They have the money, imagine

s. cassell -
k. bryant -
l. odom -
k.brown
j.foster -

bench:
s. parker
f. jones or k. rush
d. george'
c. mihm
r. turiaf
l.walton
j.farmar

You would have a amazing backcourt and a very well rounded frountcourt that could rebound extremely well as well as defend and pass.

Ummm, why would the Lakers trade for a Jeff Foster? The only reason there have been heavy rumors of Chris Mihm being on the trading-block is because the Lakers believe Kwame is best fit to play center...Foster will just be a down-grade to Mihm, IMO. And why the hell would Foster start over Mihm in the first place when Mihm's been a primary offensive weapon for the Lakers, knows the offense really well, and has been on the squad for the past 2 seasons? I agree with you about signing a Kareem Rush type player...But currently, we're in most need of a power forward...PeACe

I think Foster would be a better fit for the Lakers cause of his defense, starting Cassell would be a downgrade defensively from Smush and Foster would be a defensive upgrade from Mihm.  I think you guys would be very good.
