ok here's the deal..
the forum has been updated to the "latest greatest" beta version.
its meant to be miles faster, has bug fixes and has an improved search.. yada yada..
everytime i've gone to ask about problems with the current release version
we were using.. people would say.. why arent you runnin the latest?
why don't i like to run beta software? because it causes problems..
after all the performance problems lately.. i caved in..
so first things first.. the forum layout i paid someone to make us back
whenever that was is obseleted by the newer forum version. great.. more work.
so i paid someone to convert our template for the beta version.
guy did a great job :) (if u feel like contributing donate buttons up top..)
next up.. i lock the forum up, back it up.. and install the new beta version..
all goes well to begin with..
around 8pm i set it off converting the forum database to be compatible
with this new version. i go out for a skate.
come home its still converting.. all good.
here comes midnight. still going.. calculate about 20 past 1 it'll finish.
set mobile phone alarm, get in bed.
around 1:10am i get up.. and watch it for a bit.. stick on some headphones..
chat to people in #WestCoastConnection..
5 hours deep so far.. almost almost done at 2am.. and bam. the upgrade page
times out a few posts short of doing it all. So i check there are no mysql
updates happening (there is one..) so i wait. and do it again. refresh page. same again.
so i wait for it to end
so i run a shell.. optimise the database. that'll speed it up.
still nuffin.
poke around for nearly an hour.. find a couple posts by people having a similar problem.
try the latest solution first.. didn't work.
another earlier one with a modified copy of the upgrade script..
hurrah.. around 3.30am its off again.. (so i start writing this post in notepad :))
figure i'm gonna get to bed at 4am.. that makes an 8 hour upgrade.
i have work at 9am ish.. nice.
i stalls again at another point.. no clues this time..
I give up, post a support incident.. go to bed 4:20am.. (blaze one for me! ;))
*pause*
so i got to work at 9am this morning... i figure i'm not gonna get a support incident reply until
late in the day friday (i.e. once americans are awake).. and realise i can probably fix things
by installing all the webserver, php, sql software shit on my home PC..
so i end up getting a package called WAMP http://www.wampserver.com/en/
which was designed to install everything i wanted with ease.
So I remote connected to my second pc and downloaded a copy of the dubcc database..
and took the afternoon off work..
around 3.30 in the afternoon i've got dubcc set up and running on my pc..
and once i'm there i'm able to run the upgrade script again..
which doesnt fail (as expected)..
an hour later i have an upgraded database on my PC..
so it just needs to be uploaded over the one on the server..
stop press.. i get a reply to my support incident from the forum people.. too late.. :)
a bit more than an hour after that I have it on the DUBCC server..
10 mins later we're back in business...
time taken to upgrade : 23 hours. :D
so.. why don't i run beta software? because it causes problems..
lol..
so if you find any problems.. which i'm assured you shouldnt.
post in here.. so I can moan about them.. and this time.. they wont be ignored..
(lack of search or spell check doesn't count... search may return very soon... just wanna make sure everything else is ok first)
oh and the main new thing ya'll should notice is that new thing that says how many people are viewing the same topic? cool huh :)

Damn, that sounds like a whole lot of work for simply running a forum. Props to you Seer for doing that 8)
And yeah, hopefully the Search button will be available again. I use it frequently...

That's dope, especially the 1st one. the 2nd one seems to bug a little in Firefox, is it supposed to change back to the post when you click it the 2nd time ???
4. Shows this in the info center in the board index: " Most Online Today: 123. Most Online Ever: 320 (February 28, 2006, 19:22:19)"
5. PM layout is totally different, and features some new buttons & options, possibility to delete messages older than "x" days.
6. Better layout on boards, different font ??
7. "Last Post"-button shortcut in all boards.

another new feature is called AJAX (why i dont know lol)

Yeah but do you know the criteria to pass that? They're trying to make people write all code in lowercase so if there is just one <BR> ect, it will fail.
-
even <br> will fail :P
its gotta be <br/> :P
-
another new feature is called AJAX (why i dont know lol)
Damn, thought you, of all people, would know what AJAX is. :P
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AJAX
It's a crazy tool, Google makes a lot of their apps with it, e.g. their personalized Google homepage (http://www.google.com/ig) and G-Mail, Microsoft made their "Office in the web browser" with AJAX, plus their Windows Live Mail and most of their "Live" applications..
These sites show off AJAX:
http://www.winlike.net/
http://www.protopage.com/v2
http://www.altnytt.no/ <<- Dynamic news search
Endless possibilities, would be dope to see what how you can use AJAX for on Dubcc.. ???
-

<CopKillla> can't use the fourm with out getting aload of shite dipset crap playing
<CopKillla> it's annoying when trying to listen to winamp
Also can't you get those thread markers so you know where you've posted?
-
there are thread markers already.. look closer at the left hand side icons! ;)
performance judgement hour is 1 hour away.. 5pm -> 9pm UK time on week nights has been the time when the forum has slowed down
