Title: Ben Wallace Heading To Bulls! *Updated*
Post by: jeromechickenbone on July 03, 2006, 05:40:47 PM
This is on ESPN's home page:

For the last six years, Ben Wallace has been the face of the Detroit Pistons. No more.

A league source told ESPN.com Monday night that Wallace has told the Pistons he has accepted an offer from the Chicago Bulls.

While exact details are unavailable, the offer is thought to be a four-year, $52 million deal.

A deal can't become official until July 12, when the salary cap is set for the 2006-07 season and exact contract values can be computed.

The move will come as a shock to Pistons fans who thought the chances Wallace would bolt from Detroit were slim to none.

The Pistons came out of the gate Saturday offering Wallace a whopping four-year, $48 million deal, but they told the four-time defensive player of the year that it was their final offer.

The signing clearly upgrades the Bulls' front court, albeit at an exorbitant price. The Bulls will have to use roughly $13.5 million of their projected $16.7 million in cap space to secure Wallace.

However, Wallace adds the veteran toughness and defensive presence the Bulls felt they lacked up front.

Look for the Bulls to now explore trade scenarios involving Tyson Chandler.

One potential opportunity, according to sources, is New Orleans, which is mulling a Chandler-for-P. J. Brown swap. Brown is in the last year of his contract, which would give the Bulls even more cap relief next season.

The Bulls also have explored Chandler trade scenarios with the Hawks (via an Al Harrington sign-and-trade) and the Warriors.

The move puts the Pistons in a difficult position.

They lose Wallace for nothing and don't have anything more than the $5.1 million mid-level exception to offer to potential replacements.

There are a few starting center-caliber free agents out there, such as Joel Przybilla and Nazr Mohammed, but none who can give the Pistons what Wallace did.

Instead, the Pistons may opt to beef up their backcourt and to move to a more up-tempo style with Rasheed Wallace at five and Antonio McDyess at the four.

Chad Ford covers the NBA for ESPN Insider.

Crazy.  I thought he was gonna re-sign in Detroit.  Chicago is really putting together quite a team.

I don't know, the Bulls, assuming their draft picks measure up and if Big Ben signs, have a very good chance of winning the East.

ppl dont realize but if ud been following the team since Paxson drafted Hinrich they've had a bright future
Of course mainly the picks & movements before 04-05 season made them a great set up for the future, but ppl were underestimating them co-z they didnt have that STAR but we have like 9 players who are part of our core who are under 25 now (depending on whether Tyson or Duhon stay) & u add Ben Wallace well yeh we have a good chance even without Ben Wallace we were only 1-2 pieces away from being a champ contender ppl just dont realize how young the entire team is

Ummm, I think everyone pretty much realizes this...LOL. That's why they're called the "Baby Bulls"...A lot of people doubted whether or not they'd be able to continue their progression after the trade of Eddy Curry, who was a leader the previous season...But They fared well and they have all the pieces to being a succesful franchise, as they will be again soon...PeACe.

Nothin better than NBA league pass and it allows me to watch every single Pacer game cause I live in Sac.  I never realized how fuckin great league pass is you get every single nba game its AMAZING.  The other thing I noticed the last couple of years was it doesnt matter whos playing Im gonna watch it like even if its Hawks vs Raptors you watch the game just to see Josh Smith, Al Harrington and Chris Bosh! League Pass = G.O.A.T

Not a leader in the sense that he leads the team, a leader in the sense that he was a main option for them, they fell back on him a lot in the 2004-2005 season...He contributed so much to the team that they couldn't keep it up when he went out with that heart condition...PeACe

actually when he went down with the heart condition if memory serves me correct they went a tear and were playing great ball without curry.

I dont think so, the bulls jus choked. They took the first 2 game easily so it shows you they could of handled the wizards without curry. They just choked.

It's all a matter of opinion...You can't deny that Curry was looked at as one of Chicago's main weapons prior to his heart condition though.
