i'm goin to update the forum entrance page, and that history once we've got the t-shirts up. (igangsta.com front page has been partially updated and work on the hittman page has started).
here's the history from the currently history page.
note : the history doesn't currently include how the name change business came about. (by the way BPG came up with the current name ;) )
- History -
Why a forum history? I thought it would be good to let people know where we've from - and how far we've come.
The history of this board is rooted in that of the old Dre2001.com forum (where I was known as PsyCreate). At the end of 1999 before Dr. Dre 2001 dropped the forum grew quickly.
Later beef, and lack of moderation tore the board to shreds.
So who started it? Well.. to cut a long story short, I knew b-please because he had previously invited me to be staff at NWA2K. One night we were chatting and he said that he was thinking of starting a board with a few other sites (these sites were already loosely affiliated with his site WC Killaz). So on 17/01/2001 I said 'I'll jump in too'. After throwing a stack of ideas around we got it up and running on my domain iGangsta.com.
The first incarnation of this board opened on 30/1/2001. Ironically days before the Dre2001.com board was put out of its misery. The remaining posters transferred from there, plus new ones came through the 'West Coast Affiliate' sites.
The hosting I was using at the time was fine for a web page based site, but sometimes it was down for a day or two at a time, and could be very slow. Another problem was that even though I have ADSL the site could only be updated by 56k modem.
We lost all board data once and began to worry about the stability of the board & server. I started looking for alternatives once I realised the board wasn't going to 'flop'. After a second data loss (on April Fools) I hooked up hosting on a new server. After a few days as 'madcows' on the old server (while the domain transferred) the board sat rehosted at forum.igangsta.com.
We lasted there for nearly 4 months and grew a lot in that time. The board was faster on the new host, and I could upload from my normal connection. For those with slower connections there was an annoying 'CGI Timeout' error that was displayed if the page wasn't downloaded within 10 seconds. Communication issues with the host were a problem, I was buying the 'space' from a reseller for fasthosts.co.uk and they wouldn't talk with me directly. Everytime there was a problem at their end I had to go through the reseller, sometimes they never answered, or they simply responded with 'no, that won't change'. After a month of bad uptime and increasing frustration I started thinking about a new host.
On 22/06/2001 the host shut down the reseller, and barred access to all the customer accounts. This was without prior warning. fasthosts.co.uk wouldnt allow me access to the board data, so I couldn't move the board onto a new host. The forum was the primary cause of the reseller being shut down. But fasthosts wouldn't say why, just that the site had been 'monopolising the resources available'. They wouldn't say what, or by how much, so I had no indicators when looking for a new host.
Even if the forum moved they wouldnt allow the reseller access unless they agreed to pay £500 a month, for 3 months, at which point they would review the resellers usage.
Of course, the reseller couldn't and wouldn't pay this, but if they cancelled the board data could be lost.
Fortunately I know the reseller and we had been monitoring the average usage of the site (All the other customers were new, we accounted for 99% of the bandwidth used). Luckily I hadn't been to secure information on the Fasthosts servers, so the forum wasn't secured in an orthodox way. After a few hours work I managed to download the board data and resconstruct the forum on a new host.
We went live on our new, and current host on 23/06/2001

No doubt. Everyone (most everyone, that is) comes up with very informative and well thought out posts. There's little beef's here and there but hip hop has always been about battlin, beefin.. whatever. It's part of the reason why we love and collect it.
For the most part we all spread love and respect others. Props, ya'll!
