Title: Need help with my thesis on Hip-Hop culture...(Doggystyle-related)
Post by: CRAFTY on August 01, 2006, 03:15:39 AM
I'm currently writing a chapter "How rap music conquered the charts", in which I discuss The Chronic & Doggystyle. Now, I looked up the album sales of Doggystyle on RIAA's website, and it says the album has been certified 4 times platinum (as of May 31st 1994). But when I checked Wikipedia, it says:

"According to SoundScan, the album has sold 5.9 million copies as of March 2005 and holds the 30th place on the biggest One-Week Soundscan Sales since the start of this chart with 803,000 albums."

Now, since this is a thesis, I need an official & credible source. And although Wikipedia is very often accurate, I can't really rely on it to mention it as a source. Can someone tell me where I can look up the exact amount of record sales?

Thanks.

P.S.: In my chapter "How rap music conquered the charts" I'm discussing all the albums that helped rap music become a more popular music genre. So far, I've already discussed The Chronic, and I'm about to discuss Doggystyle.
I'm thinking of discussing Bigger & Deffer (because of the I Need Love song, which did well in the charts), and I'll definitely mention Biggie's albums, Eminem's albums & 50 Cent's albums.

Now, am I missing out on any other hip-hop albums that played an important role in bringing hip-hop to the mainstream? I've already discussed Run-DMC & N.W.A. in another chapter, so I've got that part locked. Thanks in advance for the help.

I've already checked RIAA's website 'Seer, but there it says Doggystyle has been certified 4 times platinum, while Wikipedia mentions 5.9 million copies. And since it's a thesis I'm writing, I want to have it correct.

this is a shot in the dark, but maybe you could ask one of the homies that has access to sound scan's weekly numbers to do a lookup for you. i don't know if they can lookup previous soundscan results, but it's worth a try. i know jome frequently posts soundscan results, i'd get at him.

I've always heard it was certified 4 mil. Wikipedia has never been a credible source. If I were you, I'd go with what the RIAA site says.

ask whoever posted it on wiki for a source.. you can add a "this information needs verification" thing to the text and someone has to prove its true..

Sorry I don't know a credible source for that...

Don't forget about Sugar Hill's Rapper's Delight!!!

I hope you also included a chapter in which you mention people like Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Treacherous Three and all the other hip hop pioneers... A thesis on hip hop wouldn't be complete without recognizing those people!

Suge The Source cover, The Chronic, Doggystyle... Maybe you should do a D.R. chapter... ;)

^^^^Yeah, I've already discussed DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and Rapper's Delight.
And as a matter of fact, a few hours ago I indeed came up with the idea of spending an entire chapter on Death Row Records. Should be interesting... 8)

Props to everyone who has already replied. I appreciate it.

You should also incude 36 Chambers & Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Why Cuban Linx???Because Ghost & Rae were the first dudes to rap that Crisstyle shit, they're the ones that elevated that whole mafioso shit.Alot of rapper's work were influenced on that album (Jay-Z, B.I.G).Thats just a small part of what that album did to the rap game, check wikipedia for more info.

Dear Mama changed our lives in South Africa.Even songs like I get around and Poppa's song touched me and I was only a kid, from Strictly for my N.I.G.G.A.Z.

Salt 'n Pepa, "Let's talk about sex" was huge!! Even "Shoop". I liked them and I wasn't a rapper or into hip hop then. Queen Latifah's UNITY(WHO U CALLN A BITCH) WAS HUGE!!

Keith Murray's the Most beautifullest thing in the world. Remember ShineHead, "Try My Love"? He did "Jamaican in New York".

Other music that got big worldwide or at least in Africa was Heavy D and The Boys, "Now That We Found Love What Are We Gonna Do?",Heavy D was on Michael Jackson's Jam in 1991.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, Summertime. They introduced us to rap and then Snoop came and them made us love rap!!lol. I remember those days I could n't even hear what they were saying.

Remember Bobby Brown and R. Kelly and them used to rap their songs in the third verse. Remember B.Brown's "I gotta get away" and "Humping Around"? Classics!

Kris Kross got me into hip hop. Used to do their songs at talent shows.

Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio ran shit in the mid 90's when Death Row was quiet.

MC HAMMER AND VANILLA ICE DESERVE SOME PROPS TOO.

Just reminiscing on the songs that got me into hip hop!!

@StepYaGameUp: thanks for the tips. I'll indeed include Wu-Tang's album and the Cuban Linx album.

shoot an email to the guys running urbanconnects.com . they´ve checked up some shit for me in the past regarding Soundscan.

Thanks for the link. I'll do that rightaway...
