tupac/B.I.G./50-cent

most rappers are overhyped because rap music is so prolific and overhyped. its overkill, rap is everywhere, annoying.

Tupac is a little over-rated IMO.....Im not trying to take anything away from the guy, but I think he got REALLY big mainly because of the way he died (RIP)...He was a solid rapper, and made some heart felt tracks, but he wouldnt be in my top 5.  I never really got into his shit, even tho he has some classic material.  I just wasnt diggin his flow, or his voice really back in the day, and havnt got deep into his shit since he passed.  The only Pac cd's I have are Makaveli 7 Day Theory and AEOM.  I like both those cds, Im just not into Pac that much like most people are.

The only reason Pac is overrated is because Pac fans are some of the stupidest muh'fuckas out there, treating him like he was a messiah and shit.

As an MC, he wasn't nearly as good as Biggie, and definitely not Top 10.

You have to look at Pac from the perspective of all-around artist...his persona, his lyricism, and the impact he had upon the game (both negative and positive).  In that respect, he becomes one of the greatest and most important figures in modern American music.

Pac was dope, but he did have some shit out there.  B.I.G has some good shit, but he too has some wack shit out there.

JAY-Z SUCKS big time!

SHIT like Dipset, MOBB Deep, JA Rule, Jay-Z, Kanye West, pretty much every rapper from the East Coast SUCK big time! I can't stand any of thier shit at all!

I would never disrespect Pac, or take anything away from him, but I don't listen to him. I also think he's over rated, because his fans do trat him like a messiah. Sure he made some heart felt tracks, but he also made his "shoot em up bang bang" tracks and "i stick my dick in every women that moves". And, agian no disrespect, but the way he died defanitely added 2 the reason that every1 thinks he's the greatest.

It is true he was a little overrated, but he is still the greatest IMO. As a raw lyricist a guy like Biggie would be better then 2Pac, but as an overall MC, conceptual writer, and versatility, Pac out shines almost anyone in rap.

Well, I don't understand why Biggie should be the greatest, 1st he only released 2 albums AND there weren't THAT great... Ready to die hasn't the same quality than Illmatic, 36 Chambers... and the 2nd disc of Life After Death is full of fillers. Plus Jay should re-record Hola Hovito and rhyme "If I ain't more overrated than BIG, I'm the closest one"

Pac maybe over-rated by people who claim he is the #1 MC of all time.

that ain't true, but what is true that he was a one of a kind and he is top 10 without a shadow of a doubt.

technical-wise, he wasn't the GOAT.

yeah, pac got shot and died after being in a coma for 7 days (allegedly) now where is he now, his crack head mom is  just juicing his name to pay her rent, millions of 14 year olds own his cd and think its the best cd ever and grow up thinking tht pac is  number 1, he isnt. to me, he didnt have a very good flow. he did work alot(so his mom can juice him, he was thinking ahead) but half the songs that he recorded and got stashed away ar fillers. then the fillers get released on cd and people think hes the greatest, oh shit im late for work.

Most Overrated. IMO.

1. Biggie - He was only big (no pun intended) because he was the only east coast rapper getting major play during the whole west coast era. 1992-1996.  Lyrically mediocre.
2. 50 Cent - White teenagers (male and female) absolutly love this guy.  All he got is one big push from Interscope and every hip hop common fan thinks he's dope because his songs are catchy. lyrically garbage
3. Jay-Z - Everyone in the entire industry sucks his dick. lyrically above average but content is horrible.
4. 2Pac - Hardcore fans just keep pushing him.  Lyrically mediocre, songs are hit or miss.
5. The Game - Same as Pac above.

I would say that he and big have been blown out of porportion but as far as his music goes, hes better then 90% of the people ever in hip hop.  He had the ability to touch people and tell stories...shit that happened long before his death.  I really think its corny that people who HATE Pac, either to go against the grain to look cool or for whatever other reason (like being a biggie fan, cuz you cant like both  ::) ) say shit like he sucks or wasnt good.

Sure he wasnt crazy lyrical like Big L or Big Pun...but none of those two have penned songs like Dear Mama, Soulja Story, Dear Mr President, or only god can judge me.  Lyrical talent isnt just about punchlines and flow.  Story telling and people really deeply feeling your words are part of that also.   Just cuz Jadakiss is sick with the punchlines does not make him a better MC then Tupac.  If you dont like his music, say it.  Dont try to disguise it by bringing up other shit.

technical-wise, he wasn't the GOAT.

Thats not what made him better than everyone else though. His song writing ability, his story telling ability, and the ability to make songs about real life shit in a way that people who have never lived it can relate to it or be touched by it is what made him the greatest. Nobody else has ever had those abilities to the extent that he did. Nobody has made their mark on the rap world like him. Oh yeah, and it doesnt hurt his legacy that he is the top selling rapper of all time and he isnt even white. Imagine that.

Celebration or exploitation?YN pulls no punches as he tackles the key questions surrounding Tupac’s legacy and its place in the rap game.

Posted In: XXL Magazine, Features
Words: Elliott Wilson Images: Reisig & Taylor

I know the question y’all asking yourselves: Why did XXL put Tupac on the cover again? Well, it’s the 10th year of the anniversary of his death, stupid. And our ’Pac covers have always done their numbers. I even sold one with his mom, Afeni, on the front a few years back. My bosses said it couldn’t be done, but y’all proved me right. You got to give the people what they want.

Truth be told, there’s just not enough true rap stars around these days—artists who have touched the world the way ’Pac has. I was shocked when my staff was so overwhelmingly supportive of doing this issue. They seemed to feel it would be almost disrespectful not to acknowledge the man who remains the most influential person in hip-hop culture a full decade after he left us. Plus, the past 10 years of his career achievements needed to be documented.

Now that you’ve enjoyed our tantalizing time line, it’s time for da boss man to face the music. So I’ll address 10 topics that have come up in discussions around the XXL offices while we’ve been slaving away trying to finish this thing. Thank God for granting me this moment of clarity. How long will YN mourn him? Until y’all tell me to stop.

1. HOW EXACTLY DID ’PAC BECOME THE HIP-HOP NATION’S CHOICE FOR G.O.A.T.?
Well, it starts with Makaveli. Though it was body-slammed by critics when it dropped two months after ’Pac’s death, the album is a classic that captures hip-hop’s most controversial star at his most volatile and engaging. From the fiery venom of “Bomb First (My Second Reply)” and “Against All Odds” to the playful bravado of “Toss It Up” and “Just Like Daddy” to the riveting religious overtones of “Hail Mary” and “Blasphemy,” ’Pac’s most potent platter is the album your favorite MC can’t live without. It’s the record that rapper is playing in the background while he’s chillin’ at the crib. The one he cops over and over and over again.

This album is even beloved by two artists who get dissed on it: Nas and Jay-Z. In fairness to the New York giants, it must be noted that ’Pac’s death (and that of his arch rival, the Notorious B.I.G., six months later) was a determining factor in allowing them to embrace the memory of their former antagonist—all is forgiven in death, and it should be. Ironically, five years later, it would be Nas and Jay-Z engaging in rap’s biggest battle since ’Pac and Big and all the East-West nonsense—complete with claims of swagger-jacking and sleeping with the enemy’s woman. And how twisted was it in 2002 when Jay-Z remade a song from an album that targeted him to announce his then-budding relationship with his real-life squeeze, Beyoncé Knowles? ’Pac’s original “Me and My Girlfriend” was just a metaphor for a gun—a concept that Nas himself mastered earlier in 1996’s “I Gave You Power.”

Speaking of power, it’s the rappers that emerged in the late ’90s and the new millennium that put ’Pac in the top position. His peers anointed him king, and the fans cosigned. Example: Go see Jay-Z live and watch the dope boys and girls go crazy when Jigga Man lets his DJ drop the needle on a ’Pac classic. That gets more cheers than the main attraction.

2. WITH ’PAC DEAD AND GONE, ARE WE ALLOWED TO QUESTION THE MOTIVES AND MOVES OF HIS DEAR MAMA?
It’s a fact proven in rap: Mothers become celebrities when their sons pass away. After a legal tussle with Suge Knight, Afeni is the official boss lady. Simply put, she’s in charge of the legacy. What projects will come out and which won’t? Who gets permission to use which vocals on what song? She’s got the answers, the one and only master of the masters. Kinda ironic, since ’Pac and ma dukes didn’t always have the best relationship. She wasn’t always there for him as a mother, but now she reaps the benefits of her son’s recording career—something that, before he died, she seemingly had little to do with. Where was she when her baby boy was signing his life away to Death Row Records? An ass-whuppin’ by the one who gave him that life in the first place might have been needed back then.

To give credit where it’s due, Afeni has put together a couple of quality projects and created a respectable foundation and arts center, all in her son’s name. Like all parents’, her intentions seem to be in the right place. Still, the decision to have Eminem produce an entire album of her son’s material? That’s a never-forgive action.

3. ISN’T THERE JUST WAY TOO MUCH POSTHUMOUS ’PAC MATERIAL?
Yup. And bet your bottom dollar, most of it ain’t worth your hard-earned cash. Only the most bored of rap fans or the most fanatical of ’Pac fanatics would really take the time to listen to double-disc debacles like 1997’s R U Still Down? (Remember Me) or ’01’s Until the End of Time in their entirety. And honestly, couldn’t someone have talked some sense into Afeni before she decided to drop a spoken-word album based on ’Pac’s poetry? Oy vay!

4. ARE THERE ANY POSTHUMOUS ’PAC SONGS WORTH LISTENING TO?
You gotta have a hole in your soul if the “The Realist Killaz” doesn’t get you amped. Producer Red Spyda’s sinister pairing of ’Pac and a then-emerging 50 Cent was a vicious volley in 50’s beef with Ja Rule—and packed an extra punch since so many rap fans felt that Ja had been biting ’Pac’s style for years. You know the late star would have been laughing watching Shady rumble with Murder Inc. throughout 2003, arguing over who would get to break bread with ’Pac if he were here on God’s green earth. (The real answer? The Boot Camp Clik. They actually knew the *****.)

Then there’s Trick Daddy. While they never met (to the best of my knowledge), ’Pac’s “Still Ballin” (from 2002’s Better Dayz) featuring the Miami mack has enough sonic chemistry to make it feel like it could have been a real collaboration. Trick loves the kids. ’Pac loved the thugs. So it’s not hard to imagine these two raising hell down in the Sunshine State. The after party at Club Rolexx would have been off the chain.

Still, ’Pac’s most poignant cry from the grave might just be “Changes” (from 1998’s Greatest Hits). Despite the cheesy Bruce Hornsby sample, this previously unreleased gem proves that no amount of overproduced studio magic can match the quality of material that ’Pac actually saw to completion. That’s just the way it is.

5. IS IT WRONG FOR ’PAC’S FORMER ENEMIES TO RECORD SONGS WITH HIS VOCALS?
Yeah. But actually, Nas is the only culprit here. Don’t get me wrong, “Thugz Mansion” is a good song. But it’s hard to justify making amends (by way of making music that will surely make money) when the other person isn’t around. I know Nas insists that things between the two were copacetic in ’Pac’s last days, and I’m sure Afeni asked him really nicely to get down. But come on, Esco, just say no.

he isnt top 5 meterial, he did drop wack verses, he was a balarina, he isnt even from the west, he might be top 20 meterial
What the fuck does a ballerina have to do with anyone rapping? He said it himself, "though east coast born, im west coast raised" He did drop wack verses just like B.I.G. and Big L, and every motherfucken rapper in the history of life! Cant recall when a rapper was known for never dropping anything wack! Bullshit, Unrealistic! Pac may not be the greatest rapper to you homie, but damn dawg! How the fuck you gonna say he is overrated! You must be from New York to say some bullshit like that!! Fucken haters! Yeah i agree that Pac was maybe not the best rapper ever! SHit Jordan was not the best shooter ever, Maybe Larry Bird! Jordan was not the best passer ever, Maybe Magic! Maybe not the best defender or dunker but MJ had a little bit of everything!! He was a complete player!! That Is why he is the greatest! That Iz What Pac Was! Great Rapper, Great Song Writer, Passion for Rap, Dedicated, He DIssed The Living SHit OF Notorious, Conscious Rapper! Can Make Club Bangers! He Had No Weakneses! Or AT LEast it was hard to point them out! I luv Notorious also Dawg but c'mon homie, dont talk out of your ass!! Cant recall the last rapper that would give you goosebumps just on lyrics - 2PAc! But why give you credit for your statement, when legends like Jay-z and NAs, Snoop ,Scarface, even oldschool legends have said that 2Pac was the shit! They Are the legends, You Aint Dawg!

I think the problem to the question, most overratted rapper, is, what measurements are you supposed to take to rate a rapper?
Is it the record sales?
Is it number of albums they sold?
is it number of fans?
.........
I think people here are rating rappers in different ways, they got different views on what rating mean, thats why so much confliction?!!?

Tupac is prolly the best song writer in hip hop history but his flow and lyrics aren´t that great. but his song writing abillity makes up for a lot of that.

how can yall say his flow aint that great, his flow was the best ever or damn close... lyrically not the greatest, as far as making songs and bein real and comin wit emotion and and his influence he is number 1 by far

NO 2PAC is not OVERRATED, maybe underr
