E-40 Strikes Gold

Bay area rapper E-40 is celebrating the success of his latest album My Ghetto Report Card, which was certified gold by the RIAA this week.
Fueled by the Keak Da Sneak-featured "Tell Me When 2 Go," and the current single "U And Dat," featuring T-Pain and Kandi Girl, the album's good fortune will lead to bigger things, according to the lyricist.
"It feels good," E-40 told AllHipHop.com. "I got my second wind [and] it's the beginning of a new beginning."
Executive produced by Lil' Jon, My Ghetto Report Card debuted at number one on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop charts and number three on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
In addition to Lil' Jon, the Reprise/BME/Sick Wid It Records release features production by Rick Rock, E-40's son Droop-e of the Pharmasuticles, Bosko, and Studio Tone, as well as guest appearances from Mike Jones, T. Pain, Keak Da Sneak, Turf Talk, Juelz Santana, B-Legit, The Federation, 8Ball, and UGK.
The video for "U And Dat," is currently in heavy rotation at BET, MTV and Fuse.
Fans can look for more of E-40 with the release of his new DVD, E-40 & The Hype of Hyphy.
The disc, which hit stores Tuesday (Aug. 29) includes the videos "U And Dat" and "Tell Me When To Go" as well as a behind the scenes look at the making of the videos.
Viewers can also learn about the Hyphy movement through a "Hyphy movement" special on the DVD, which features special appearances by Federation and B-Legit, among others.

Look, the days of multi plat albums is almost gone.With the internet and the real lack of promotion by most record labels, it is difficult. E 40 didn't have to do a album to prove shit. The man is already a legend, but he took that ambassador to the bay and helped make it global. Hey you got to go gold 1st before you go plat! Ice Cube is next, so congrats to 40. west west yall.

he had the entire hyphy shit on his back, and after over a 1.5 months this fool it barely over 400,000
remember, Xzibit's Weapons of Mass Destruction got a gold plaque but was not even CLOSE to 500,000. I think he did a lot wose then e-40 also

Second....as far as people who aren't involved in the industry are concerned, only those like us are really checking the sales like that....the average cat may not know if 40 is platimun or not. So the companies may be looking and saying "damn, 40 had major play and didn't sell", which may make some companies feel that it's not worth taking a chance on a Bay or West Coast artist.
At the same time, the fact that the entire nation knows what hyphy is, and that they know about ghost riding whips and going dumb and the Bay's culture, is a direct result of E-40 and what he did with the movement. So he has at least cracked the door open for more Bay artists to succeed. But at the same time, people who are fans of this movement aren't really going to check for an artist just because they are from the Bay...but because they have the hyphy sound. So it is a helluva win-loss situation to me.

i never expected 40 to hit platinum and anyone that did is a fool
40 only hit plat once and that was the peak of west coast rap. what makes u possibly think e-40 could pull that off in the year 2006?
the biggest artists of the year barely do multi plat
40s last 2-3 albums have sold around 300,000 records each. He hasnt had a gold plaque since almost the late 90s
the fact that this album produced 2 hit singles, introduced hyphy, got mainstream play and acceptance, and went gold in the process is a phenomenal feat for 40
its the most he can possibly do...maybe 600,000 overall if theres a decent 3rd single. His style is too unique. Here in Toronto, while his 2 singles got play, no one likes 40.

There are alot of fans that like artists and burn their albums. I guess from a financial standpoint you are not supportive but I know there are a gang of people that are vibing off of burned copies. 40 accomplished the goal of getting the Bay back into the spotlight so at least for the new cats coming up it will open up some doors.
