"Jay-Z Apologizes for Super Ugly 12/16/01 - After receiving a call from Mom, Jay-Z went on New York's Hot 97 radio station to apologize for crossing the line with remarks he made on "Super Ugly". According to Jay-Z his mother was not too happy with song that wound up getting heavy prime time rotation on the tri-state area's number one hip-hop station. Jay-Z said he never thought the song would get the type of air play it received. He expected the diss track, which jacked 2 beats from popular songs, to make its way onto mix tapes and disappear after a couple of months. He was surprised it made its way to his mother's ears.
:D
Jay-Z said he never put any thought into how the song would affect others. he was only thinking of Nas when he made the recording. He apologized to Carmen, the female mentioned as Nas' ex, and her family, reiterating that he never took her feelings into consideration when releasing the song. Jay also apologized for any females who may have been offended, as well as any males who may have gone through a similar situation.
One person Jay-Z had no apologies for was Nas. The co-owner of Roc-A-Fella Records felt Nas crossed a serious line on "Ether" with all of the gay references aimed in his direction and toward the label in general. Jay-Z kept emphasizing that in the neighborhoods he and Nas grew up in, remarks like those would have people coming to blows quickly. Jay-Z also did not appreciate a remark made about 'the Aaliyah crash should've been Jay-Z and Damon Dash', from an emcee rumored to be Nas, although he has never claimed responsibility. " :D
-
Jay told Angie Martinez that he bumped into Nas' brother at a fast food restaurant and they got into a conversation respecting the others' music and saw the battle as healthy competition. Jay-Z felt a little of that competition died with Nas' 'H to the O.M.O.' reference on his Stillmatic freestyle. Jay-Z felt he kept his composure though, keeping things fair on "The Takeover". Jay alluded that he never directly mentioned Carmen on that track, only he and Nas would know what he was talking about. It was the many gay references which Jay-Z described as "vulgar" that had him taking off the gloves on Super Ugly.
Jay-Z would not say whether or not he would continue to battle Nas. He did say he was finished battling Prodigy. Jay mentioned that his Live CD would be dropping on December 18th. He and R. Kelly have 16 tracks done on a collaboration CD titled "Best of Both Worlds" which will probably drop next spring. Finally, he confirmed that his next new solo project, tentatively titled "Blueprint 2 Baby", would drop late 2002. In case you're counting, that's 4 CD's in a little over a year's time!

Jay-Z appeared on Hot 97 late last week to apologize for the level that his lyrical battle with Nas has dropped to. The appearance was prompted by a phone call from his mother, who did not approve of her son's latest answer record, "Super Ugly." "Mom put in a call and said, 'That went too far.' And she's never, ever called me about music. So I was like 'Okay, okay, okay. I'll go shut it down,'" Jay-Z told Angie Martinez, who earlier in the week premiered "Super Ugly" on her show. However, Jigga did not take sole responsibility for the issue, instead saying that he wished he hadn't stooped to the level of his competition by bringing the mother of Nas' child into it. "Once again, I apologize. I felt like I didn't think about women's feelings or [Nas' former girlfriend's] feelings, or even my mom. It was really like, 'Let me meet your level of disrespect with this level of disrespect.'" Jay-Z also said that he figured the track, an answer to Nas' "Ether," would get plenty of airtime on local mixtapes, but he never expected it to get heavy rotation on the radio. "Freestyles usually go away in two weeks," he said. "I didn't know it was gonna be the official battle of the beats, seven-hour marathon. It was an answer to disrespect. I didn't go in the studio to make a song. I made a two-minute freestyle." Jay-Z, who has taken the high road or made subtle digs in previous disputes with other MCs, also explained why Nas drove him to an all-out attack on "Takeover," a track off The Blueprint. Apparently, after Beanie Sigel dissed Nas during a freestyle session on Hot 97, Nas called Jigga to call a truce. But only a short time later, Nas dissed Jay during an interview on a Los Angeles radio station. "For me it was like a sport. 'Takeover' was like a sport," Jay said. "I respected dude lyrically. I feel like I'm on top of my game. I don't feel you can compare his career to my career, but that's just my opinion. It just pushes everybody to sharpen their skills. That's what rap is about. It's a competitive sport." The rivals get a chance to go head-to-head Tuesday when Jay-Z's Unplugged album and Nas' Stillmatic are released in stores.
