Fall Update for X360 Hitting Live Tomorrow
Trick-or-Treat? Microsoft offers new features for XBL subscribers.
by Kathleen Sanders
October 30, 2006 - Microsoft says, "Treat!" About four million Xbox 360 Live members will be able to download the sixth free system update for Xbox Live Silver and Gold subscribers tomorrow October 31 -- on Halloweeeen! The update boasts 85 new features and enhancements including: support for native 1080p games and movies, faster XBL Arcade game list display times, and additional choices for video playback.
With the update X360 owners who have networked their PCs can stream WMV video from a Windows PC running Media Player 11 or Media Player Connect. This update will also allow X360 to read and play video files from data CDs and DVDs, USB 2.0 flash drives, and X360 memory units.
Fans of XBL arcade will no longer need to search for new games to download and demo. Now you can ask your console to automatically download new game trials as soon as they are released to the Marketplace. The arcade will also be easier to navigate with sorting options like "recently played" and "by category." Friends leaderboards also got tweaked with additional functionality to easily see and compare all your achievements with your top 10 friends. In addition, a new "Tell a friend" feature lets gamers easily pimp and promote their favorite titles with their friends.
This update also includes XNA support for games aspiring devs might create when XNA Game Studio Express is released later this year.
Paid downloadable content will be available at the same time for XBL Silver and Gold subscribers. However, gamers who shell out the extra money for the Gold subscription will get access to special XBL Marketplace content such as; game demos, free game add-ons, community videos, and free gamer pics and themes up to one week early.
