Title: Jonathan "J.R." Rotem >> Scott Storch
Post by: Jome on November 09, 2006, 11:52:26 AM
Maybe not in terms of tracksheet (http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=62171.0) or hits, but he'll get there, bigger potential and more versatile than Storch.
The best up and coming producer out there, imo.

Discuss.

when i bumped DA in the car there was one track that stood out. california vacation had the craziest beat by a long way and really silly bass - jr is the next best thing to dre right now.

He uses more live instruments than Scott. Scott's beat at times sound synthetic. Heavy on the keys too on alot of tracks. He has put out some dope shit this year already, but I would go with JR in the long run also.

No question about it. JR's beats go hard. Scott Storch is hit or miss. I'm pretty tired of his just-add-water-n-stir beats.

I agree that JR is doing some big things and I know Scott is hit or miss, but after hearing Make it Rain I am convinced Storch is still near the top.

JR uses some more unconventional sounds, listen to california vacation there's a kind of crazy sound that hits a high note. in the lil kim track he's got a typical storch sound but gives it a lot more bounce with those electro style drums that drop on the beat. he's innovating with all kinds of sounds. that track Vishiss ft. Fredro Starr & Sticky Fingaz - FLATDAFUCCOUT that someone hooked up a while ago is pretty out there in terms of the sounds being used. still bangs really hard though, the bassline is mad.

LOL, that's a synthesizer sampled from Ohio Players' "Funky Worm" that's been used on a zillion West Coast songs from the 90s.  That ain't "uncoventional", you trippin son.

After making shitty beats for a while, I think Scott has been better lately ( Ups and Downs, Game and Fat Joe album, the beat for Tyrese or on the Meth cd) nothing mind blowing though... J.R got some nice beats and yep is more versatile than Scott...

I feel J.R. is the better producer right now, "California Vacation" & "Doctor's Advocate" got me hooked...the beat he did for Rick Ross's "Push It" is solid...

he got a long way to go yet befo he can step into scotts shoes......i aint even a big scott storch fan but nah, gotta disagree on this......he got potential but he gotta do alot mo yet before he can step up to scott........this coming from someone who dislikes half his beats...........thats my opinion

Personally, I've heard a decent number of JR's beats, maybe 15-20 that I knew were his, and I think he's nowhere near Scott as a whole....however, it's somewhat of a case of the 6th man tryin his hardest to make the lineup, while the starter is slackin and only shows how dope he is when he has to. Thing about Scott is that he is EASILY the most diverse producer in rap, and the ONLY person who can make a beat that sounds truly West Coast (L.A.), East Coast, Down South, and probably even Bay or Midwest if he had to.....and he can make a STRONG club track, great laid back track, great reflective track, dark grimey track, or anything inbetween. However....after Lean Back, his name was in such demand, that he didn't have to try hard anymore to sell beats, and he was able to only bring his A game on one of every 6-8 tracks....and he also had to milk the sound of "Lean back" by makin a grip of beats that used the same formula.

But please believe....I think Scott could come with a COMPLETELY different sound from what we are used to him doin if he wanted to, but bein a producer, I can understand the point of milking your sound to the death, just because people are gonna buy it and you don't have to try as hard. And I read his interview where he said that he purposely waters his beats down because he can't get too complex with his music because the general audience won't appreciate it...that makes PLENTY of sense, and I believe that he could drop some shit that was great, but would go over most people's heads.

So yeah....I think JR may be more consistent up to this point, just as Scott was before "Lean Back"....but he still has to prove himself of bein at Scott's level, who is at "Super Producer - A list" level for producers.

JR is real nice and did well taking dres place on the album. His beats were mad nice and i hope he continues to do songs with top artist cause he is real good.

Not taking anything away from storch who is amazing at producing singles, but isnt great at other stuff. Make it rain was hot, let it ride was ok bit overhyped, candy shop and ust a lil bit did their job etc... He's good at making a song that will get air play.
