Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines.
But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all.
He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but he said the same problem is expected when the game console goes on sale in the U.S. Nov. 17. About 16,000 different games have been sold for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in North America.
Fukuoka said the problems in playing the older games were not a glitch and had been expected. Sony announced the problem on its Japanese Web page Nov. 11, the day when the PS3 went on sale to lines of eager fans at Japanese retailers.
so basically.. they knew.. but didn't tell anyone till it was too late.. nice!

It's only a few games, 120 out of 16,000, most of which will be fixed with updates.
The ones they knew about were the newer games: Tekken 5, Shin Onimusha, GT4, but it's not like Sony were going to delay a whole launch to make old games on new technology.

On the WII i heard you can play any old games . Im i right? nad if so how wil it work.

Yeah I think so, NES...SNES etc, etc, cool aye...
As for the PS3 not playing some older games..............who really cares when they'll be bringing newer versions of those older games. But I see your point......Sony's not being upfront on a whole lot of things.

wii's old games like nes/snes is via emulation.. via diownlaoded rom's through the wiiconnect24 service which you buy using tokens you buy
only gamecube is played using original game media AND original controllers.. including the wacky ones like donkey kong bongos thingy

I wonder if you'll be able to customize your PS3 like you could do (illegally) w/ the PSP

It works like XBLA. Points. You can buy point cards in stores (think iTunes cards) or you can use your credit card to purchase points.
Also, the VC service will not have every NES, SNES, N64 etc. titles on it. It'll only have a select number of titles, presumably the better ones.

I've never seen so many pussies congregated in one place than on this board lately. I've also never seen so many people I've never heard of use my name... I'm starting to feel like a fucking rockstar.

you can't handle raw facts man!
the PS3 _MAY_ not need to run official emulators through online things like 360/wii does as it will run linux.. and many emulators are already ported to linux..
-
i admit i don't know all the technical facts...but my statement wasn't about technicalities
show me one thread u started that had something positive to say about the PS3 (u can't say there isn't anything positive) and i'll keep my mouth shut..heck, i'll even start ignoring trauma again

They never claimed they could.... although the Wii has claimed that it will play every old gamecube game, and it does.
