Glasses Malone Addresses The State Of The West, "Kingdom Come"
November 30, 2006 by nando
Blu Division CEO, Glasses Malone recently posted a powerful statement on our forum about the state of westcoast rap and it's perception by the rest of the world, as well as Jay-Z's place in the game and others at his age taking things in other directions...check out the unedited statement below:
Why cant hip hop artist grow up? This Jay Z album should help alot of us with our transition into being older, wiser, and responsible adults. The Hip Hop critics have try to crucify this cd. Whats wrong with a 37 year old man to show growth. That nigga is ole enuff to be someone's grandfather for christ sake. It would've been a crime for that man to rap about slangin rocks, or gunnin people down. Its a shame to see rappers his age rap about juvenile shit such as gang bangin, slangin, and other ignorant things.
Not to mention these artist who have been successful don't even understand whats really going on in the hood. Thats why we constantly see these lowriders, khakis, and all type of other shit in these videos. Niggaz aint wearing that in the hood. Its just a foul misrepresentation. When was the last time they been to South Central, Inglewood, Watts, Compton, Long Beach? We look so old to the rest of the world. Where are the Dodge Chargers? where are the Harleys? If you been to L.A. lately, muthafuccas are wearing $500 jeans. Niggaz rarely even go to Crenshaw. The New Crenshaw is Broadway. Have you been there?
Rocks aint poppin in L.A. anymore. Pills are the new crack rock, Cush is the new crack rock. Open your eyes L.A.! Fuck that open your eyes whole world. Jay Z has commited the worse sin in hip hop. Being SUCCESSFUL! But is it really that horrible? Is it wrong to tell the youth what type of things lie ahead if you handle ya finances correctly? Is it wrong to convince the youth to stop putting worthless rims on a car? Is it wrong for a man to say don't waste your money on jewelry? Sounds like something my father would say. Guess what, Dude and my pops aint that far apart. So why not give worthwile advice like getting your credit together. Buyin property(nightclubs). These are the dreams people should aspire to achieve. Not a Phantom. Embrace the cutural growth.
I wish West Coast artist close to this man's age would make music that actually played a role in our street culture. It probably could help alot of these street issues. Why did I have to be the first one to make a song uniting crips and bloods? I'm glad to hear the records that have been inspired from my music. *Enters "Tha Sermon"* Once I'm done with you muthafuccas(fans and rappers alike) You gone look in the mirror at your self different. You gon have to ask yourself, Why can't I keep it this real? Pooh said "Tha Sermon" is too advance for the hood. We will see.
So I end this with embrace albums that show growth. We all gotta grow up. Why not learn from someone who has been thru our same path? Oh, and I wanna give a shout out to my boy Mykestro "The best rap Nigga eva", Bad Lucc " I been listenin to yo shit today nigga", Problem "Thats why yo deal gon be for $800 dollars, lol" , Bishop Lamont "Mr I-Sneak-on-WestCoastrydaz", and Pooh "Gettin 20% of all my muthafuccin money" and every New West emcee........Not to mention my squad "Blu Division/Firin Squad" our time is now Niggaz!
This is your President "signing off" - Glasses Malone

g. malone is a wise man
-
LOL, it's funny how easily he shits on 98% of the rap game just from what he says.
I don't know too many people who've knocked Jay's album for the content though...but damn, what he was sayin was straight shots at some of our favorite artists. LMAO at how accurate he is about what L.A. is. I've been saying the same exact things for the last few years....cats don't really wear Khaki suits n shit no more...you rarely see lowriders out if it's not a picnic or group meeting...you don't even see that many crackheads around L.A. like you do in DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Detroit. So when cats talk about how they push crack n shit, I'm like "hold up....I can count the crackheads in yo neighborhood on one hand!!" And Crenshaw rarely cracks...the last time I was on the Shaw and it was really poppin like that was early in May of 2004...it was dope as hell that day, but hasn't been nearly the same since then.
-
wow...the man speaks the truth.
-
I was just thinking about that ...!!! time to Grow!
-
Yeah G.Malone always comes real. Fuck Jay-Z though.
-
I love dood for that....good read. What they know about these pills we be flippin though?
-

-
Yeah G.Malone always comes real. Fuck Jay-Z though.

Yer a lot of people hatin on jay z cause he's not talkin about crack sales (like every1 else) or gunnin people down. I thought jay z did well seeing as it was a hard task to tackle , to make a whole album thats mature. I mean you here mature songs but not whole albums so he did well
-
G Malone is like Joda. Spoke some wise shit.
-
G Malone is like Joda.
Yep, can't understand a thing he's saying
-
g.malone's the truth.
-
Fuck that i still want my Westcoast Gangsta Rap... there is room to have both... its Entertainment... these guys arent roll models... if they are to you then u got a problem... its like the whole Grand Theft Auto Debate... fun game... if it influences u... then you fucked up.... a game of acctually being a good citizen on that game would suck... its so fun and good because you do bad shit...
but there is room for both that Gangsta Rap and the "grown up" or "mature" rap that he is talkin about... look at Pac... he had a good mixture
-
^ there is room for both... but something needed to be said because in the hearts and minds of many fans they don't make room for both... they just side with the hard gangsta shit..
-
i think g.malone was just backing jigga up a bit... seems like everyone is dissin the fuck out of jay-z, and everyone (including youngstas on forums) are joining the hate jay-z bandwagon because he released an ultimo pop album...
the album is good, i dont see why the hate, i got bored of D.A after 1 spin, i still play a few tracks off kingdom come...
-
^ I enjoyed the album... Lost One's is my favorite shit... Its the perfect beat for a song like that. I remember back when word was going around about this being made there was talk about possibly Chevy Jones doing the hook. That would have been a nice for her had that actually come about...
-
I agree with what Glasses is saying but for me, I did not like Jay Z's album because his flow was off on a couple of tracks and it just sounded rushed to me. The content was good but it sounded like the threw it together. I own every Jay album he has and he can do better than this. That was my only beef with it. He is right about the west but like someone said earlier, there is room for both, maybe not on the west but music as a whole. Murs is a example of this. Dope album with no cuss words and just telling life stories and I do not hear but a few peeps talking about how dope this album is. It's like it's too boring for people because it does not talk about gangsta shit.
-
Malone is speaking the truth there, but on the real, I haven't seen ANY negative comments about the content on Jigga's album, but MANY negative comments about the overall quality. Ain't nothing wrong with growing up, as Malone is saying, but I don't think anybody is saying the opposite either. The opposite, of anything.
As for the khakis and lowriders - wether or not they do that shit in LA today is totally irrevelant. Khakis, Chucks, white T's, lolo's, weed smoke... - they're all CLASSIC west coast gangsta rap imagery, and it's not going anywhere. Those things have evolved into something that once you see those things, you think "westside gangsta rap". Every style and region got their own shit that's been there for years. Some got their teeth grills, some got Timbs with the shorts. West coast got what they got.
Besides, all that shit is a show, and both the artists and fans alike know it's exactly that. It's a show. But it's a damn good show, and while fans want to always see new things, they're always wanting and are always going to want to see that classic show again. And it ain't just with west coast rap, it's universal to all genres of entertainment - classics are always wanted. Like those classic 70's, 80's kung fu movies you hear samples of in Wu Tang records. I got some of those on DVD, and when you compare it to anything modern it stands out, you see it's old fashioned. But I (and many others) love that shit - the way they cut those flicks, how they zoom in, how the sets look, how they do their kung fu. That's a classic type of show that has its fans still in its grip. Westside gangsta rap got that grip over its fans too, and gangsta rap ain't dead yet. It's changed, it's evolved, it's matured, but at the heart it's still the same.
I'm still gonna want to see videos with Snoop in khakis and chucks, Dr. Dre in a lowrider blowing smoke at the camera. It's the classic show that I love and I'll always love it. Glasses and whoever are welcome to bring their new shit, I'm waiting for it already, bring it on. But the classic show is still there. What the fuck would the west coast be without one crip & one blood? A pair of chucks and a pair of khakis? A lolo and some chronic smoke?
Rant over.
-
^ i can dig that... especially from a fans standpoint. But a lot of this is coming out because us L.A. and Cali folk want the rest of the world to know that we are much more diverse in style then whats been led to believe over the years...

Yeah, I can feel that. I didn't really realize it 'til you said it though.
-
That's cool I guess but it seems really hypocritical, since thats what he raps about and he was at the cali iz active video shoot (with the lowriders, khakis, etc)
-
basically this dude just taking shots at SNoop the entire time
and people hate on Jay's album because it's not good, what a thought ::)
his album most likely will do Xzibit #s
-
It aint to many 37 year old grandfathers out there unless they or their child had a baby in high school.
-
Actually, there's a whole line of people that can be attributed to... but why take it as a negative as "taking shots"... Why not view it as someone wanting to see more people uplift in their music? Whats wrong with someone wishing to see more of that?
"Taking shots" is stuff like when artists run their mouths on other artists like 50, Game and others have done... thats taking shots... This is nothing of the sort.
And yes... there are lots of people that have had kids in high schools... its becoming more and more common.
-

How is he going to deny being in a music video with a bunch of West Coast legends and up and comers? It's not like he was aware of what the music video was going to be like before he got there (though it probably would have been an easy guess). And he doesn't rap about that stuff nearly as much as some fools do.
As for the statement, there is a lot of truth in what he is saying. Most West Coast rappers don't know how to grow with their lyrics, and West Coast fans won't let them. Although being harsh, Malone isn't really taking shots at anybody, but speaking on the West Coast in general.
*patiently waits for The Beach Cruiser to drop*

Glasses is the first guy to write a song about gang unity?????? lol

I dont know, it seems like most of his songs he talks about working the block and all that stuff. I just think hes being a total hypocrite also because he was running with game and bws for a while and games music has alot of that too. And to be in that cali iz active video wiht people like daz kurupt and snoop (people who've been rapping about that stuff their whole career) is just retarted. To one his own though
-
He is not saying for anybody to stop doing anything...the guy is a Watts Crip... Just for more grown up and mature material...there's nothing wrong with that...

He was talking about old catz, saying that they bang and still sell rocks!! He aint old lame!! Plus, he raps about what he did, not just what he is doing now!! His point is basically, stay updated on what you do!! Be real to yourself!! Dont make a whole album about blasting fools and selling crack, when the last time you pulled the trigger was 3 years ago!! You understand boy!!
