He's worth way more than 6-7million per, it would have been insane for him to sign that deal.  He can easily make double of that later before the 2008 season.  It's really a slap to the face to Matsuzaka that the offer was 6-7 million per.

i dont care how good his stats are in japan or what he did in exhibition games... he has never throw a pitch in major league baseball.  And i heard the sox were offering 7-8 million ?

It's not difficult to measure the talent level in Japan.  If you look at what Meche, Lilly, Padilla and a few others got this season...he should get about 15-16, and that could be a bargain.

Add the 35 year old Batista to the list with his $24 million 3 year contract

and not too many of them have had long term sucess.  Minus Ichiro and Hideki Matsui.  And even tho matsui puts up great numbers in the states it is a large fall off from what he put up in japan.  Also the only pitchers that really have had sucess in the states are relivers.  Nomo had that great rookie season. And then everyone realized he was tipping his pitches and after that he was never the same.

I'm talking about judging the entire Japanese league and have major league equivelents to his performances

and check this out

"At that point, the only thing to do was to do a comparison of the performance of pitchers who pitched in both the majors and NPB. I used matched numbers of innings pitched (with a minimum of 0.1 IP) for the pitchers in both settings. What I got from 169 pitchers were 14907.2 matched innings, each pitcher pitching the same number of innings in each league. "

These were the results

Hits 1.072
HomeRuns 1.236
Walks 1.072

The talent level is somewhere between AAA and MLB talent.

and that drop off between the Bigs and AAA is huge so even if its somewhere in between its still a huge drop off.

Even if it's a 1.50ERA increase in performance, which really is a pessimistic way of looking at it...it would still make him better than the majority of the SP in this off-season and a younger Zito with similiar numbers.
