Title: Essential G-Funk records?
Post by: dclee on December 18, 2006, 03:44:24 PM
Hey i'm new to this board, been lurking a lot lately. So what would you guys consider some g-funk records that fans need to get? I'll start off with 2 obvious ones: The Chronic and Doggystyle.

Discuss.

I have noticed a couple of people on this topic mention Dove Shack-This Is the Shack. Do you guys really like that album or do you just mention them because they were affiliated witth Warren G?  To me This is the Shack is wack as fuck and I don't even really consider it a g-funk album.  When this album came out I was dissapointed as hell with it.  I thought it was gonna be like The Twinz album,  but it wasn't at all.  And I think Warren G only produced 1 song on this whole album.

And besides the obvious Chronic and Doggystyle, Black Mafia Life by Above the Law is dope, as well as Regulate by Warren G and Conversation by the Twinz.

No one for Paris, Guerilla Funk? Don't make me take out a copy and smack you kids in the head with it. Because that might damage the CD. And it's a damn fine CD, so I don't want to do that.

I think that's the case with some of the people on here.  IMO they are overrated and I think Def Jam realized that too after the album didn't sell that well. "Summertime in the LBC" is a little bit overrated by west coast rap fans because of the shack's affiliation with Warren G.

Back to the topic though, here are some essential G-Funk records

Foesum "Perfection"
Warren G "Regulate"
Twinz "Conversation"
Both Lil' Half Dead albums
Domino "Domino"

and fuck it, I'll throw these two in the hat

Da Brat "Funkdafied"
Kriss Kross "Young Rich and Dangerous"

these albums were made at a time JD was biting the G-Funk sound hard, and besides Erick Sermon (who should be given a little bit of credit for establishing the sound for artists out east), he was THE best at copying the G-Funk vibe.  'Tonite's the Nite" by Kriss Kross would be considered a West Coast Classic if that beat was rocked by West Coast artists.

A lot of good ones have been mentioned already, here's a couple more.  But MAKE SURE you check out Twinz - Conversation, that's the tightest G Funk album ever IMO.

Too Short - Get In Where You Fit In
Bookie - Stressin
Nate Dogg - G Funk Classics
Warren G - Return Of The Regulator
WC - The Shadiest One (more of a hard funk)
E-40 - In A Major Way
E-40 - The Hall Of Game
Celly Cel - Killa Kali
B-Legit - Hempin Ain't Easy
B-Legit - Hemp Museum
Soopafly - Dat Whoopty Woop
Dubee - AKA Sugawolf
