Whuts Poppin-this is a interview We did with Hi-C on my site
Merry X-mas
Bigg Steele
One on One: First off, I wanna thank you for taking the time out to sit down and chop it up with us. What's going on new in the world of Hi-C?
Hi-C: Me, Bigg Steele & DJ Coke-e just came off a sold out tour in Japan. It was a beautiful experience, and I was suprised at the reception that I recieved.
One on One: That's really dope! Was That your first time in Japan?
Hi-C: Yes, They have been trying to get me out there for years, but a former "Friend" would never relay the message
One on One: Care to elaborate?
Hi-C: nah, he know's who he is
One on One: Its all gravy. So tell me, You dropped the "Hi-Life Hustle" a few years ago, a bangin CD IMO, as well as many other's, Were you pleased with the results?
Hi-C: To be honest, I was very upset with the way they handled my promo. I had just came off of having a top 20 radio record, "Let me know" and they pretty much dropped the ball. The bootleggin situation didnt help either
One on One: Who do you mean when you say "they"?
Hi-C: Rap-A-Lot records
One on One: Ok, I see you also mentioned "Bootlegging" What do you think about the current situation with downloading?
Hi-C: I think on one token, the internet can be a good tool to expose artist to the public. I dont mind a free preview, but the majority of people will get the album and never go make a legitimate purchase. i think the economy is just really bad now, Gas is sky high, and people just aint got the chips to pay 16-17 dollars for a album. That's why Im going to stay independent so I can get the public my music at a decent price and make a bigger profit margin. the middle man is killing the game right now.
One on One: Thats a good concept, How are you gonna release your new music? and Im pretty sure the fans wanna know, is somn new on the horizon?
Hi-C: yeah, Im working on my website now where people will be able to download my music on a song by song basis and what not, or download the whole album. I own my whole catalog, so Im gonna get it poppin like that.
I got somn new coming soon, I cant lie, i dont know when its coming, but it's coming.
One On One: any production from Quik?
Hi-C: No. I produced 80-90% of my past material, so Ill be doing all my own production. Quik is a talented producer, but he's doing him, So Im doing me.
One On One: So no reunion?
Hi-C: We all grew up together, but it comes a point where certain things are said, and certain lines are crossed, so to be honest Imma always have love for Dave (DJ Quik) but at this moment NO! as far as the future, who know's?
One On One: I feel you. man, I thank you for sittin in with us, any last words?
Hi-C: Thanks for having me, and to all my fans, be on the lookout for Hi-Lifehustler.com. Im dropping joint yall aint never heard! classics that me , Quik and the whole camp never released.
One On One: Thats whats up! Peace!
Hi-C: Later

Looking forward to hearing some of that unreleased shit 8)

Fuck yeah, great to hear from Hi-C. The Hi-Life Hustle was one of the best West Coast albums released in the last few years, just straight up West Coast feel good music. I'm really looking forward to that unreleased shit :o :o. It sucks that him and Quik aren't gonna collaborate any more, but I think of anyone in the camp, Hi-C will make it on his own cuz the production he does by himself is awesome.

:)

"Hi-Life Hustle" was pure garbage and Crawf hasn't really impressed me on a solo tip since he dropped "Skanless" with Tony A..Would be interested in hearing the material that wasn't released though....Any artist that came out from the umbrella of Dj Quik with maybe the exception of Suga Free, needs to swallow thier pride and have Quik if not producing, at least have him included for the overseeing & direction of their future projects...
-
^so niggas suppose to just sit up and wait for dude huh?

Pure garbage? I really don't see that at all man. That album was banging from top to bottom, and his production was so good on some tracks I thought it was Quik doing it. And Suga Free proved with Just Add Water that he can't make a real good album without Quik, that album had a few great tracks on it, but it was all over the place and too generic.
-
Nice interview, thanks. I can't wait for a new Crawf album. Sucks that he ain't workin' with Quik but I think dude could do just fine by himself.

ya haha what the fuck, pure garbage?
I still play tracks off that, there wasn't really a bad one on that album
and I agree with you EDizzle, Suga Free's album sucked except for a few, mainly because Quik was missing
Hi-C can do it himself and do it pretty well at that, so whatever he comes out with should be good
too bad that whole Rhythm-al-ism crew split up...
-
Thanks, nice interview!
Too bad he ain't workin with Quik no more, I love their collabos... "Do You Wanna See", "Let Me Now", "PH PH" to name a few, great duo!
-
who knows, they may work together again. the hi-life hustle was tight, but cats entitled to they views. I can tell you for a fact he dont need Quik to do his beats that dude is a dope producer
-
thanks for posting this bigg steele... good to be updated on crawf and what hes got on the horizon...
what got me though is that he has a big following in japan... i mean sell out shows and shit ??? steele, what was the deal ?
peace
-
^^^Yeah, believe it or not, the Japanese are very very much into Westcoast shit- The tripped out part is that was Crawfs first time going, as well as mine and we had no idea they would react like they did, they even get Power 106 in Japan through subscription. It was a real dope experience, so yeah, dude does have a nice sized fanbase out there. Im gonna put the video up on my website soon as these dudes shoot me the footage
-
tight but you should have asked him about that young buck artist who stole his name.
-
haha good shit... Hi-C is in my personal top 10 of all time.. cant wait to hear sum new shit!

pure garbage? wtf? LOL
and hi-c definetly doesnt need quik beats to make a hit record, although i wont lie, a collabo with quik would be nice!!
-
Hi-Life Hustla was a fun record with a heavy stain of "old-school" hip-hop in it. Even though I rarely digg through it top to bottom, it is certaintly a dope ass record.
Good to hear Crawf aint left the music bizzz!!
-
lol @ evry1 catching feelings over what I said :-*...
You guys probably haven't even listened to "Hi-Life Hustle" since it dropped...Of course you'll come in here and say I've been "bumping" it all year ::)....What I said was true...the album was a big dissapointment to me with maybe less then a handful of traccs...Easily a forgettable album...Quik isn't god of producing, but he hits more then he misses... He put out that garbage "Under Tha Influence" & produced "Classic 220"(which I didn't like either, but I'm sure someone did :-\) and he had some production on "Hi-Life Hustle"....."Just Add Water" was garbage too, and obviously it was missing something, cuz it was all over the place
I'm sure some lines were crossed between Quik & Hi-C/Suga Free, just as lines were probably crossed between Snoop & Dre at the time of the Death Row split, but even Snoop understands that Dre brings out the best in him...Even if Dre isn't producing for Snoop, I'm sure he would love for Dre to mix down and give direction and opinons on the material he is releasing, if he had time ::)...I'm not saying he should wait for Quik, I'm sure Crawf could produce a hit or 2 himself...It's just like how some people say Daz's production isn't as good as it was when he was fucc'n with Dre on Death Row...Crawf is cool on the few guest apperances he does, but on solo tip I'm not really checc'n for him..Stop getting all butt hurt over nothing

man i still play hi life hustle at parties when i go out, only track that wasn't that special was ecstacy. whenever i play the cd it gets attention and people feel it, so i dont know what you talkin about.
even my girl who doesnt like hip hop likes a few joints off the album.
classic 220 was a dope ass CD too.
-
Just found this interview... anyone know if there were ever any "unreleased" tracks or Hi'C's website ever take off???
-
"Just Add Water" was garbage too, and obviously it was missing something, cuz it was all over the place
You just say that because your not a Suga Free fan, your a DJ Quik fan. Just Add Water was the worst of his 3 albums, but still top 5 west coast albums released in 06. Just Add Water went in a few different directions, but thats a good thing. We don't want 3 albums that all sound the same. It's good when an artist trys new sounds, new producers. The album was too long, too many skits, maybe 3 or 4 fillers, but songs like "Suga Kain", "Person 2 Person", "You Ain't Knowin" and "Boyfriend" are classic suga free tracks (along with some others).
Any REAL suga free fan loves this album, it's all you Quik fans who hate it. And IMHO this album had outstanding production from Freeze and Blaqthoven. Also the best tracks from the New Testement were produced by Big Saccs.

"You Ain't Knowin"
[/quote]
still bump that track 8)
suga free & knoc make a good team

all those guys NEED Quik....tha best songs on their albums are always tha Quik ones...Suga Free's last album was hot, tha 2nd one not so much....AMG's last one was weak, AMG NEEDS Quik....he has no chance on his own...I think Hi-C has a chance of doin it on his own tho..

well it's pretty clear AMG is rollng with quik agian...

Not really, the best song on the New Testement was "High Heels" which Saccs did. "Get Loose" was also one of the better tracks, and was also produced by Saccs.
Suga Free is Quiks only protege who recovered. I'm feeling all the new J-Steez tracks a lot more then Quiks more recent stuff. Josef Leimberg, Saccs, Steez and Freeze can give Suga Free just as good beats as Quik can. The Fixxers is a horrible idea and a bad direction for Quiks career. AMG sucks.
-
Well musicaly Quik isnt like before.. but it's not that he dosent got it in him.. it's just theyre doin what's hott.. and whats hott got them signed to Interscope.. so i dont think getting signed to Interscope Would be leading in a bad direction..
best songs on their albums are always tha Quik ones.
