Title: So, 2Pac Died In 1996....So What Happens In The Year 2066?
Post by: 187Proof on January 01, 2007, 01:36:46 PM
I ask this question because I read that copyrights on the artist's music are only good up until 70 years after the artist's death. So after that 70 year mark hits, what happens then? Does the rights to the music go up for auction, or does the copyrights automatically shift over to this family, or what?

Wow, I always thought that they own all their music completely unless if there was some kind of a particular issue.

Damn, music bizness is bullshit.

I think by then nobody is going to be listening to Tupac so it really wouldn't matter. He'll be like Betthoven

I have a feeling owning the rights to Beethoven's music today could make you quite the rich person....Same might be said for owning 2Pac's music in 2066.

Isn't it 99 years? (not that it matters)

I think when the copywrite runs out you can use the music as you wish all you have to do is pay the writers, I don't think anybody can "own" it after that period.

There's a debate about this going on in the UK just now because the copywrite runs out after 50 years and a lot of artists want it extended.

I forget the details...I think it is 70 or 75 years though.
