Title: Tupac sold 22 million records?
Post by: Quadruple OG on November 02, 2001, 08:56:08 AM
On mtv.com they have an article comparing the sales of DMX to sales of Jay-Z and Pac, and they say Pac has sold about 22 million records.  I think this is an underestimate, considering AEOM and Greatest hits have gone, or are VERY close to going Diamond, and Makaveli sold around 4 million copies, UTEOT and Still I Rise about 3 million, and the others lower than that.  I thought the number would have been around 30 million records sold.

I Think They Got It Right Actually.

They are right if you don't count all his double albums as two albums.

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST RIAA CERTIFICATIONS ON www.riaa.com, TUPAC SOLD 33 MILLION ALBUMS... I don't know what the fuck MTV is talking about but maybe they check Soundscan and count his double albums as "one" like WestCoastVeteran suggested...

2pac has sold alot more than 22 mil i think

let me do some real quick math

2n-        gold
S4mn-    1.5 plat
TL-        1 plat
MATW-   5 plat
AEOM-    5 plat (certified 10x plat cuz of 2 discs)
DK7DT-   5 Plat

RUSD4M- 1.5 plat (certified 3x plat cuz of 2 discs)
GH-        5 Plat (certified 10x or 9.5 cuz of 2 discs)
sir-         2 plat
UTEOT-   1.5 plat (certified 3x cuz of 2 discs

so with out the double albums boosts for platnum status pac has had 28 million people buy his records.....just in the USA

but when you buy a double cd you're paying for 2 albums and you deserve the extra sales

so his sales come out to a total of.....41 million cd's sold  only in the USA

so either way MTV is off

why do all bone fans always say e1999 went diamond when it clearly didn't?

Pac has only sold 22 million?? Um, no. Try 35 million........

2Pacalypse Now--Platinum
Strictly 4 My Niggaz--Platinum
Thug Life--Gold
Me Against The World--2 million
All Eyez On Me--about 10 million
Makaveli--4 million
R U Still Down--4 million
Still I Rise--Platinum
UTEOT--3 million
Greatest Hits--about 8.5 million

do the math.......that comes out to way more than 22 million.

Also, Bone IS the best selling rap group ever, easily. E.1999 Eternal, however, isnt Diamond yet, but its damn close [about 8 million, and it STILL sells alot]. Bone has sold around 28 million total.

True that, cuz they were around long before Pac was. Elvis, by the way, hasnt sold 100 million, but Led Zeppelin has. But sales dont really mean shit, cuz some of the wackest artists [like N'sync] sell alot of records.

What it means is 2Pac is the best selling rapper ever, but never got 5 mics. Also he is considered a music icon, but yet also is not much respected by the actual critics of rap music. So what, 2Pac is not respected, but I'll tell you what, nothing, I mean nothing, keeps people from reconizing the true G.O.A.T. Now lets talk about who's sold more than 'Pac, if there is anyone. Biggie, close to 17 million, Dre, about 14 million off of just two CDs, Eminem, about 14 with just two CDs.

Bone is the closest, with over 26 mill sold, but NO one in hip hop is gonna catch Pac. His records continue to fly out of the stores even years after his death.

here is the official numbers for Snoop Dogg and my comments next to em...

Doggystyle - 5 million
Now for the longest time, Doggystyle has been listed as selling officially 5 million copies. I honestly think this album hasnt been certified in years, for the older guys in here, yall can remember how huge snoop was, i mean if jay z's vl. 2 wet 5 platinum, this album HAS to be at least 7-9 million copies like some one else said.  This cd had everything that qualifies a MEGA HIT, unbelievable hype, 4 BIG singles, a megastar, MTV coverage and everything, Im really eager to find out how many copies this mofo really sold,

Doggfather - 2 million
This was released around 5 years ago, and the initial hype was big, im not sure if this cd has sold more than 2, probably around 2-3 million, it was considered a disapoinment.

Da Game Is To Be Sold...- 2 million
Same thing as Doggfather, huge hype, disappointing cd, it probably sold 2-3 million.

No Limit Top Dogg- 1 million
Officially, this cd is only certified platinum, thats because ..
- it followed the horrendous Da Game album, (which resulted in an exodus of Snoops fan base)
- bad first single, bad video
- it only came less than a year after the last one, there was no time for snoop to make amends, get him self restarted, this was like snoops rebuilding era, only sold 187,000 first week
- However, when Bitch Please got released, this album st up to platinum, how much more infuence did b please have on the sales?  im hopin this will go 2 platinum eventually (all snoop cds except this has gone 2 platinum)

Tha Last Meal,- certified platinum
only platinum, but unofficially its definitely double, this album brought snoop back, sold 400,000 copies first week, but i honestly think snoop didnt capitalize as much as he could,
he could have used better single choices

so officially snoop has sold more than 13 million (including singles, whats my name, gin and juice and woof all recieved plaques) copies worldwide, but i honestly think the unofficial number is around 17 million,

WHAT YALL THINK?

His singles and Maxi singles count for sales too.

I know The Houw Do U Want It MAxi Single with Hit Em Up Oon it is 2X platinum.  Plus "DO For Love" off of R U Still Down is Gold.  That's another 3 million right there.

Id say Doggystyle has sold 6-7 million. However, Doggystyle isnt the only rap album that hasnt been updated in years. The Chronic, 36 Chambers, Illmatic, The Infamous, Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Me Against The World, Creepin On Ah Come Up, E.1999 Eternal, Art Of War, Outkast's first 2 albums, Reasonable Doubt, and Moment Of Truth are due for updates as well......

Some1 should update MATW,  last time it was checked it was at  2 million,  it has to be up to about 5 million an tha chronic has to be 7 million,  cuz dre has a lot of new fans since 2001 an a lot of people proberly brought tha chronic again b/c they listened to that shit so much it worn out,  like me
Title: Re: Tupac sold 22 million records?

I doubt MATW has sold 5 million. Its probably 3 point something million. As much as these albums still sell, they dont sell THAT much. It takes A LOOOOOONG time to sell an additional 2 million copies after your album falls off the charts. Even All Eyez On Me and E.1999 Eternal, which are two of the biggest selling "older" rap albums today, have probably only sold 2 million since 97'. The Chronic is probably up to about 5, maybe 6 million.

Me against the world hasnt been updated since tha release of all eyez on me,  it has to be past 3 million

All I now is that Snoop's Doggystyle is still one of the best Hip Hop purchases every year... I think it ranks in the to 1,000 for monthly buys on amazon... think about that? Almost ten years after its initial release it's still being sold at good rates... also I remember when "Too Gangsta For Radio" released.... Doggystyle sold more copies than it did... in its first week out... still sellin... so if you total it out past the 5x it is certified at... id put it around 7-9x

As of last week, these were the best selling "older" rap albums [albums that are at least 2 years old] in the country, based on purchases on the net and in all stores. These arent in any specific order, but nonetheless, these are the top ones:

2Pac--All Eyez On Me

Snoop Doggy Dogg--Doggystyle

Dr. Dre--The Chronic

DMX--Its Dark And Hell Is Hot

Juvenile--400 Degreez

Bone Thugs N Harmony--E.1999 Eternal

Jay Z--Reasonable Doubt

2Pac--Me Against The World

2Pac--Greatest Hits

Beastie Boys--License To Ill

Ja Rule--Vennie Vettie Vessie

2Pac--Makaveli

Biggie--Ready To Die

Biggie--Life After Death

DMX--Flesh Of My Flesh

those are the 15 best selling rap albums in the country, at least 2 years old, as of last week. They are based on how many units they pushed that week, but they arent listed in any specific order.
