Sony makes a small profit on each ps2 sold.
Sony loses money whenever anyone buys a ps3 or a psp. Last year, they lost hundreds of millions of dollars doing this shit.
Nintendo on the other hand makes money whenever anybody buys any of their systems, the gameboy advance, the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo Wii, or the Nintendo Gamecube. Last year, they made nearly a billion dollars profit.

I think they pushed it pretty heavily in the US for the younger kids over the christmas period. So, as the cheaper option over the DS, I guess a lot of parents bought them. Nintendo were marketing it as almost a "my first handheld", when they get a little older they can then move onto the DS and keep all their games.
