Jerry Heller, Johnny J &Pablito Vasquez Form Label - January 18, 2007 By : Rud
(http://www.dubcnm.com/artistimages/pablitovasquez-jerryheller-johnnyj.jpg)
Jerry Heller, the former manager of the multi-platinum rap group NWA, and the co-founder of Ruthless Records with the late revered rapper, Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, announced today that he has just signed an agreement, forming a new record label with veteran record producer Johnny J, who produced over 150 songs with Tupac Shakur, which include mega-hits like “How Do U Want It” and “Hit ‘Em Up.” Heller’s third partner in the new venture is Pablito Vasquez, who will serve as a liaison between the artistic and the business ends of the company, and heads up Streetlife Records.
Heller explained; "Our goal is to bring back economic integrity to the music business. The record industry was supposed to be a win-win situation between the artists and the labels. The way the business is structured now, however, many artists on major labels have to sell close to a million and a half units to recoup and break even. That is not what our label will be about. The music industry is supposed to be about everyone involved making money."
A master producer on the music industry’s A-list, Johnny J has created tracks on albums that have collectively sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide. His legendary production work with artists including 2Pac has made him one of the most successful record producers in terms of creating radio driven hits that stand the test of time. Johnny J who owns the production company, Klock Work Entertainment said; "Every day I am heard on the radio throughout the country, and that has been consistent throughout the years. I decided to partner with Jerry Heller, who is a major figure, responsible for the success of West Coast rap music. The fire would not have been set off without Jerry providing the business acumen."
While Johnny J with his nineteen years of recording experience, brings his spectacular production as an ingredient to the label, Heller says that Pablito Vasquez brings the street aspect to the label. "This is the label where corporate meets street," emphasizes Heller. Vasquez explained; "I will help oversee things on both the creative and the business ends, deal with contracts with Jerry, and I will work in an intercessory role at the label. This label will not be tied down to or limited to certain musical styles or genres. This is going to be way past the hoods. It is going to be about the streets, but we will release music and artists that will transcend both cultures and transcend neighborhoods. We are going to be about where we came from, but we are not just limited to a hood mentality. Our minds and our music go way beyond that."
The new entity will be called Streetlife/Klock Work Records, with the three principals being equal partners. Jerry Heller explained; "I get hit up for management and label partnerships at least a dozen times a day, this new label has the perfect combination for a partnership." Heller also says the new label will be similar in many respects to the Ruthless label, which he managed in its heyday, prior to Wright’s death. "The new label will focus on working with one album at a time, with more upcoming artists waiting in the wings. Most independent labels over-extend themselves, leading to failure. Part of the Ruthless model was having great production, a strong business vision, and a deep connection with the streets."

good news. I hope to see this label be more of an underground west coast thing, that veteran acts could sign to, and put on an album without hassle & both the label & rapper benefit. If not like that, something like KOCH were they can sign an artist, give them a lil' video on b.e.t. & m.t.v., but I'm always hearin KOCH be fuckin wit they acts money.

Has Jonny J been producing for anyone before he did this deal lately?
-
That's good news! Hopefully Johnny J can really get back into the mainstream and have some success again, he's a real good dude.
-
good news i think, we will see how this works

I think Johnny J produced two 2Pac dedication songs..
I think He produced 'Life Goes On' a 2pac dedication for Bizzy Bone, using the same beat as 'Unconditional Love' but changed up a little.
Here is the track:

He also produced this track for Napoleon, another Pac Dedication, feat Val Young & Johnny J himself.

Wow, very interesting business concept. They're all playing their positions which makes a ton of sense. Too many rappers try to be the lawyer, the liason, and the musical visionary which are 3 very difficult hats to wear. I know Jerry Heller is a shrewd ass, smart ass business man, Johnny J has been behind some of my favorite Hip Hop joints of all time, and that Pablito dude I've never heard of.
But it's dope that they all have an equal share. I really hope that they can do something significant, and I think they can.
-
how olds jerry gettin to be these days?
-
YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE A FUCKING RETARD TO SIGN WITH JERRY HELLER...ON THE OTHER HAND JOHNNY JS BEATS ARE DOPE.
-
Damn Johnny J looking old as hell nowadays. Is Jerry Heller even alive in the picture?

why in the world would you want that? This could be the label the west needs to get some major work going on again.. say what you want about Heller, but he's a smart fella and probably much more capable of running a real label than all rappers who got their own...
-
Heller is certainly a better dude to run a label than your favorite rapper. and he learned from his experience with dre and cube: the dudes that leave your label will be the ones to blow up, don't let it happen. just look at heller's dubcnn interview. dude knows what's up.
which is johnny j, baseball cap or mexican dude on shirt?

because I honestly have little hope this could be THAT successful.
-
and whose label will do well? your favorite rapper that couldn't pass economics in high school? Nah Heller knows what's up.

-
I'd much rather have Jerry Heller running my record company than any rapper. All you gotta do is read the fuckin contract before you sign it. If rappers are too big of idiots to read something before signing it they deserve to get fucked. He's a smart ass dude.

-T
did I ever say that? no.
I just find it hard to believe dude is gonna be motivated THAT MUCH (he is fuckin loaded) to really run the label that's "gonna bring the west back". I see this as an old man, tryna get a bit more paper. Shit, can't blame dude, he helped built the biggest label ever, why 10-15 years later, he's "intrested" in it agian. I just think it's shaky. I hope im proven wrong, and it's HUGE, and it helps infiltrate the mainstream game with westcoast rap agian, I just wouldn't bet on it.
